Hernia Stories

Hey guys it’s been 3 months since my surgery. Everything is going great so far(thank god and the doc :D). Anyways how long did it take you guys to start squatting again? Seems like I can do dead lifts/dead lifts variations but when doing squats or leg exercises the area feels a bit uncomfortable.

Anyways just wanted to say after the surgery I’m stronger and bigger than ever except for my legs, they used to be my strongest point but I haven’t trained them in months and they are looking skinnier than ever. [/quote]

Take your time.

I started lifting lightly 1 month after surgery and it may have been a mistake.

I was doing great until 4-5 months after surgery. The started lifting heavy including strongman training around 2-3 months after surgery. Now I have some discomfort at the hernia site so all I am doing now is some conditioning. My doc told me that it takes 1 full year for the repair to heal.

You might not want to lift anything heavy for another 9 months or so.

Depends on what kind of repair you get. I had an indirect inguinal hernia and it was repaired TENSION FREE with mesh…The surgeon told me to keep moving so the area doesnt heal unnecessarily tight (mainly the scar tissue from the incision and where the mesh is intertwined with scar tissue). He also said i could start lifting again 3 weeks after the repair but to start light and gradually increase the weight and there would be no problems. For those of you who have untreated hernias, do your best to find a surgeon that uses mesh in a tension free fashion (as in no weak tissue is tied to other weak tissue which causes like a 25% recurrence rate as opposed to a <.5% recurrence rate associated with a tension free repair)
