Based upon some of the insanity you’ve posted, like comparing burning the port of Rome (Ostia) with 9/11, I think you need a new one. You probably also need a new face.

And a new blue dress.

You seem to confuse technology with culture. They influence each other of course, but they are not the same?

BTW, how did you like the Japanase naval capabilities not one century later? Does this mean they went from barbaric and brutal kingdom to civilised culture in about 90 years?

It took a good asswhipping from the USA to do that.
Does this mean you agree about the difference between technology and civilisation?

Does this mean, since the US didn’t get it’s ass whipped (yet), they aren’t civilised?

Why is that?

You mean like burning widows on the hubby’s funeral pyre; or inventing a cage filled with starving rats that fits over a person’s head as torture (China); or how to kill 300,000 Chinese in Nanking?

How about when the Japanese samurai saw an American warship in 1854 (I think) and waved their swords at it? That’ll stop those evil westerners from landing! Or when the British found a kingdom in SE ASIA where the king drank a potion made of human hearts?

I mean, you do realize that those societies were barbaric and brutal kingdoms, where thought was quickly extinguished? Of course, one could take solace in the Baghavad Gita…

Barbarism and brutality have nothing to do with the ability to think conceptually or conceive of advanced scientific concepts.
I am pro the death penalty, but that does not make it anything less than state condoned and assisted revenge murder. It is not punishment,it is not justice,it is revenge murder.
It is barbaric and brutal and i’m for it.Does that make me unable to think in abstracts and so on?
You can’t change the focus of your statements if you can’t refute the argument, because then we cannot have a debate…

Yeah even Europe had its witchhunts and Inquisitions. Isn’t that also barbaric? Tell me Headhunter, do you think Europe was right in trying to colonize the entire world? That they were civillizing the natives and doing them a favor?

No one denies that Europeans brutalized native peoples. However, a consequence of European presence was to civilize the conquered region. Of course, it then became a matter of which Europeans, the British being somewhat more civilised than French or Germans. Most civilised places on earth are a result of British presence (South Africa, India, Australia, Canada, the USA, and so on). Of course, they weren’t there to turn the place into paradise; they wanted to make money (a very noble quest) and the civilising influence followed.

How do you argue with someone who compares Ostia 2000 years ago with 9/11?
How do you argue with someone like you Wreckless, who so immune to logic you want to throw up your hands and scream? How do you argue with someone like you who proposes to know all about American culture and our president, and HE DOESN’T EVEN LIVE HERE! Its generally conceded by social scientists that backward people do not understand concepts like time, future, imagination. They simply repeat some process that some rare THINKING individual thought up, like a plow. The unique thing about European culture is that they developed those concepts.

Ever read about the Boxer Rebellion? The Chinese would shoot over the heads of the British soldiers, thinking THAT would kill their ghosts. That illustrates perfectly what I mean. The reason western man dominated the world is because they were connected to reality. The rest of the world is slowly coming around, as in China, India, and so forth. Finally…

Now, as soon as the concept of nanny-government dies…

And I assume that the Salem witch trials are grounded in this Western Reality?

Or you know, the printed word, totally a western invention right?

Come on HH, you can’t possibly believe that every non-western culture is a bunch of brain-dead morons? Because if they were then how the hell could the Mayans predict solar eclipses or know that a year was slightly longer than 365 days? Because I am pretty sure creating an accurate calendar quite a few centuries before western society did requires some understanding of the concept of time.
semper_fi wrote:

Semper,

If American culture is not superior to others, why are you going to boot camp next summer to fight for it? If they’re all equal, why fight at all? Also, doesn’t this make you morally equivalent to some Jihad prick?

Also, why are you going to boot camp in the summer? In South Carolina? Yikes!!

Conceptual future-oriented thinking is primarily a phenomenon of European culture. This means that a higher % of peoples there think conceptually. In most areas of the world, someone who thinks this way is in a minority.

For ex, what would lead the Japanese to attack in 1941? Even they had figured out that they had little chance ( a few had). But, hey, they’ve got bushido!!

The west is clearly superior, though conceptual thinking is rising in China and India. The Middle East is waaaayyyy behind.

I’m fighting for America because it is my country and it came under attack. I don’t really think about the culture part. How does that make me equivalent to a Jihad prick?

As for going to Paris Island in the summer I might as well get used to the hot climate because the middle east is much hotter.

Semper,
Please note that I’m not attacking you in any way. I had 7 former students on the ground in Iraq in '03 and I send stuff to guys there. I also work with the AMVETS.

My point is that you are going to fight for freedom. You are protecting our country and our way of life. THAT’S our culture. And I certainly believe it is superior to grovelling European culture (excepting the Brits, of course) and Muslims: ‘Let’s whip her for showing an ankle!’

You are protecting the most noble and honorable country on earth. Accept that, or don’t fight.

Would you consider mathematics conceptual?
If it is then perhaps you would care to tell me where the oldest recorded mathematical documents originate from?
Unless of course mathematics isn’t conceptual,in which case my argument falls apart…

First of all, I didn’t compare Ostia 2000 years ago with 9/11. I quoted an article. I provided the link. It would be obvious to anyone.

Second, why don’t you try to point out what the difference between the two is?
For instance you could say that the Romans didn’t have F16’s. It would be a silly argument, but we don’t expect anything more from you.
You could say that the US doesn’t have a navy consisting mostly of rowing and sailing ships. Again, it would be besides the point, but that’s not the point.

I fear what makes a hughe difference in your point of view is that Ostia was about the Romans and 9/11 was about US. Yeah, that would be it.

What does “HE DOESN’T LIVE HERE!” have to do with anything. Sure I live here. IT’S YOU THAT DOESN’T LIVE HERE.

Anyway, we don’t have a president, we have a prime minister. We’re not a harbor for gays. We’re not a harbor for stupid morons either.

No, I don’t get it. Republicans want to claim they are ALL about spreading democracy…however, they originally cried out AGAINST just that when it was initiated by the former president. Now, that Democrats are saying, “You all didn’t care before so why care now”, you want to claim that Democrats are STILL at fault because they are calling your bluff for never being for spreading democracy until Iraq.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. That is some major hypocrisy and you seem to jump right in line behind it simply because some blonde raving idiot made a statement.

If you weren’t for “spreading democracy” in Africa, why is it suddenly what the republican party is about? We are waist deep in shit in Iraq and it isn’t coming up all roses…yet you are going to claim that some places can’t be rebuilt? How does this make sense to you? We didn’t even get to TRY in Africa and you seem to be ok with us being stuck in Iraq for eternity. Why does this make sense to you?

Why does it make sense to ANYONE?
I was there from May to October. Tank Hill. B-1-1. Hated every single minute, and had a fight every damn day.
