Those of you with kids in competitive sports, how do you go about training them? Do you ever get the sense that they aren’t trying as hard with you as they do with their regular coaches?
I stopped coaching my son at all. It wasn’t a good fit. I’m better as his dad and his cheerleader.
I practice with my daughter. I can be a drill dummy. I can cue her, like a training partner, but I’m not longer qualified to coach her (unless she goes back to basketball). This works out pretty well. I talk to her coaches, they tell me what to look for/ cue with her, and then give us some drills to work on. When she comes back to practice showing improvement, it’s huge validation for her that you get out what you put in.
1000% yes.
My 7 YO just wants to goof around with dad on the ice (to be fair, I’m admittedly a big goof on the ice). But he listens so well and intently to his other coaches. I have a running joke with another coach that we just let each other know if we need to help with each other’s kids because they both listen better to the non-parent.
So with that in mind, I stick with making things fun, especially off the ice. I try to make up fun games for us in the driveway that help him practice without him knowing it.
This for me with all of my kids. Better at coaching other kids than my own,
