Help Needed for Dad

Hey, I’m posting this on behalf of my dad. he’s 42 and a beginner. Has some experience with lifting weights but it was a long time ago. Using CT’s training strategy #2 in his new article as a basis I can figure out most parts of a simple program for him. However, I have a few questions.

My dad has had a problem with his knee for quite some time now and cannot really perform weighted leg movements at all. This rules out squats and deadlifts. He will be performing cycling as well but I was wondering if you have any advice?

Also in CT’s article he specifies rep ranges but no set parameters are outlined. Should I just make it so its between 24-40 I think it is but I’m not sure.

The most important thing at this point is to go with whole body workouts and to keep the training session under 60 minutes. Pick eight exercises and start with maybe three sets of each and see how long it takes. If you’re finishing well under sixty minutes, then add sets. Rest for a full two minutes between sets. Start slow and work up to more intense training. Don’t forget to do warmup sets for every exercise. As a beginner, he should be concentrating on form and fitness, not on getting big. You gotta walk before you run or you have a good chance of falling on your face (getting injured).

Good luck and have fun!
