I was dating a girl who wanted to meet up for dinner one night, but it clashed with a training session. So I told her that I was going to the gym instead. I was very fair and suggested that the next night would be more suitable. She didn’t see the logic behind my reasoning and made herself “busy” for the next few night and wanted to give me a strike or something. Apparently diplomacy is required in such circumstances.
Careful though, if you skip their “important social gathering” for some “self gratifying lifting” you could find yourself in a spot of bother. But then you could just not go, but do humour us with what happens anyways!

I would say that I have to go lift. If it’s a priority and it’s important to you she should understand.
Then again, it will come back on you

That’s like blowing off your best friend to watch my little pony. Sure you may be a brony, and my little pony means a lot to you, but in the real world people have responsibilities beyond my little pony.
If my wife cancelled on meeting with my friends because she wanted to go to yoga instead, then I would stab her. In the eye.

Eh, it’s hard as hell to write in romaji. And comprehensible Japanese is good enough for me!
Heck, avoiding comments like this are one of the reasons I’m going lifting!!!
