i took a look in the mirror recently only to notice that my round bubble butt that i was so proud of (and chicks noticed and commented) had disappeared. i put this down to sitting on my ass for a living for 10 years and less than optimal health and excercise regimen.
however, i joined a new gym about 18 months ago and love doing my squats and deadlifts.
do i need something more specific to get my glutes back to their former glory

Wide stance, high foot placement (like most guys use the leg press because you can use more weight) leg presses, with good old squats will help you get your buns back.

I hope you enjoyed it while it lasted, my ass is rock hard and no male or female ever comment on it.
I believe I built a strong neuro-muscular connection with deadlifts, but right now I think most of my glute hypertrophy comes from bouncing from low front squats.
Mike Robertson has an article dedicated to glute training. But to sum it up, there are a whole lot of things that you should be doing besides deadlifts and squats like:
Glute activation drills: birddogs, hip tilts, fire hydrants, lunges, hip extensions.
All single-leg exercises: lunge variations, stepups, one-legged squats, pistol squats, one-legged good mornings.
Hip flexor stretches.
Good mornings, pull-throughs, and glute-ham raises, stiff-legged deadlifts.
Many people on here, like Bushman, think the answer to somethings pertaining to bodybuilding. If your glutes are dormant and weak, simply doing more of the big-bang exercises will further this weakness; the body will always seek to use stronger muscles at the expense of weaker ones in compound exercises (please refer to Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson’s articles).
The same goes for guys on here asking how to get bigger and overcome plateaus in size. Here is the most simplistic answer reiterated ad nauseum, ad infinitum on here:
“Eat more; keep striving to add weight to the big lifts!”
Doing lunges with my back foot on a bench really seems to isolate my glutes and seems to have made a big difference. I do them at the end of my workout as follows:
? Hack Squat
? Leg Press
? Smith Machine Squats
? Leg Extensions
? Leg Curls
? Single Leg Lunges
I do my dead lifts on another day but that could help too…

on another note, my wife walked into the lounge room to find me “skyhumping” and turned away shaking her head but when she walked back in a bit later to find me doing firehydrants, she just flat out laughed
wide stance squats, stiff legged deads with a good glute contraction at the top, doggie style sex (the face down, ass up kind where you are on your feet squatting down to get in) are the best ones imo.
