Help, First Meet in Three Weeks

Hey everyone,
I’m new to this site so bear with me, I started training powerlifting about two months ago and it turns out I’m not bad at it so I thought why not enter the last national meet left on the calender (Ireland).

It’s a push/pull meet (Dl and bench only) and they’re my strongest lifts so I thought why not it’ll make me get serious about training. The only problem is the only way I won’t embarrass myself is if I drop to below 82.5kg (182lbs) and right now I’m around 83.5/184.5.

Could someone please give me some tips on how to drop around 2 and a half pounds and either stay the same strength or improve my strength in the DL and bench?

I’m 19 Bench:225 DL:350(no belt)

Any help would be amazing, thanks guys!

Um… You could probably drop 2lbs if you just didn’t eat or drink for a few hours before your weigh in lol. That’s just water weight. Nothing is going to happen to your strength.

Two pounds is easier.

The mods edited my post. Apparently, the link I posted was not allowed

Google: “making weight powerlifting” and there is an article by Matt Gary in Maryland Powerlifting about making weight. It is a good one.

@csulli - I should’ve mentioned that I am 2lbs above the limit when I wake up without any food or water in my system for the past 12 hours, so it’s actual weight I have to lose. It’s really a programme dedicated to DL and BP that I’m looking for right now.

@jjackkrash - Thanks for the help I’ll look it up now!

No it’s still water weight.

Here’s how things went at my meet, which had a 24 hour weigh in (pretty standard):
woke up the day before weigh ins weighing 200lbs
didn’t eat or drink that day
woke up to weigh in for the meet, weighed 195.5lbs
ate and drank that day
weighed myself on the day of the meet at like 205lbs

That is ALL water and glycogen and shit like that, not “actual weight”.

The problem with my meet and all meets in the federation I’m competing in is that weigh-ins must take place 2 hours before the meet so I was thinking it might be detrimental to my strength to fast the day before… Or do you think it will matter?

Thanks a lot for the article, this is pretty much exactly what I needed, cheers!

It’s your first meet…you’ve only been powerlifting 2 months…you have a 2 hour weigh in…and you want to cut weight?

This makes no sense at all. Eat, weigh in, and focus on the important stuff…

a) follow the rules of your fed

b) understand the commands

c) make your openers easy

d) try for a small PR with your second attempt

e) if successful, go for a bigger PR on 3rd attempt

f) have fun and learn

Ah that’s a lot different man yea. I’m sorry I don’t have any experience with 2 hour weigh ins :frowning:

You certainly don’t want to be dehydrated when you lift, that will hamper your performance badly.

Thanks for the tips! I wouldn’t usually want to cut weight but because it’s such a small amount of weight I don’t think it will be detrimental to my strength at all, otherwise I will be at the very bottom of the next weight group.

That’s ok I think the article that jjackkrash posted is pretty much perfect for me anyway! I’ll only need to drop 3lbs most when it comes to the day so won’t have to dehydrate myself or anything.
