did you get my messages from saturday? i assumed something fucked up had to have happened. If not, my closest connection is in Baltimore area, I have no one in the crofton and edgewater area (at least who you wouldn’t absolutely hate). More info might allow me to help out if necessary. hope things get on track for you.
I appreciate it. I have a fucking awesome job opportunity (hopefully) in that area. Plus, I will be close enough to be your training/kissing partner.
hahahaha, i need a good kissing partner when lauren is working. Where might this job opportunity exist? i know of a Parisi school down there (with a connection to that) and an API training facility on rt.3. or is there something else?
It’s at Parisi actually. haha. I’m not 100% sure yet. I have a phone interview coming up at some point this week.
if it’s at Parisi, my buddy andrew who you’ve met several times and was best man at my wedding worked their for several months before moving away. He still has a good connection there if you want me to tell him to talk you up a bit just in case. when he was coaching football for St. Mary’s and South River, those programs were deeply connected seeing as it is across from South River. my high school coach also worked it for a while too.
The whole Parisi program is pretty awesome. I know a guy that is working at that one in Edgewater and he is trying to hook me up. I would have to leave behind a bunch of clients here and I would be pretty much starting from scratch… but, I really feel I need that right now. I have been looking for jobs near Westside as well as getting stuff lined up to apply to every private training company in MD. I wonder if DeFranco’s is hiring. haha.

Nice article, Storm. You hands look massive, does it help grip strength? Also, I am a big fan of suitcase deadlifts off the floor along with doing them out of the rack. I’ll have to start using some straps on them to give my grip a break/train obliques/‘core’ more. What do you think of front squats/high bar squats for increasing the deadlift? I’ve found for myself that my pull sucks even worse if I don’t include one or the other.
Thanks for reading, man. I put a shitload of time and effort into that and I really hope it helps out some people. Yea, I do have pretty big hands. I have shook Brad Gillinghams hands a couple of times now and, mother of God. I think his fingers wrapped all the way up to my elbow and he liquefied all my bones. But, yes, having big hands helps. It’s physics. The more surface area on the bar, the easier it is to hold. Even if you have the equivalent to a new baby kittens paw, training grip will be the great equalizer. Small strong hands will be stronger than weak big hands. Look at all the guys sub 220 that can pull a shit load of weight. They aren’t huge. Shit, check out Ian Bell. 190 something, pulls 800+, and just looks like a regular kid that lifts. Just don’t place any limits on yourself. If your hands are small, go on ironmind.com and buy every grip product they have. Work the shit out of it and get awesome at it.

Suitcase deadlifts are the best core exercise for powerlifting in my opinion. They work every aspect of what our core musculature is designed to do: anti-rotation, fight the force of gravity, and fight unnecessary movements. Also, it works them with the same movement pattern as a deadlift.

I basically only squat high bar. I know I am sacrificing weight on my squat but it is more natural feeling to me. What I have noticed is that any close stance squatting helps your deadlift. If you want to give your hands a break but want to work on your pull, set up a box about an inch or two above parallel and do conventional deadlift stance squats to it. So, your feet will be about hip width apart. This HAMMERS all of the muscles that initiate the pull from the floor. It is also very humbling because this is hard as shit.

Also, yes. Front squats are awesome for your pull and also make you a better person in general.

Thanks again for reading.

Thursday-5/2/13- ME Lower- S=12, M/P=a little less on suicide watch than I was before.

Hip Opener with traction<~~~ my new favorite stretch
Squat opener with traction
Ankle Mobility stuff
Bunch of squats with the bar

Box Jumps- Havent done these in a while, need to get back into them- Worked up to tie my all-time PR at 47 inches, BARELY missed 50.5inches 3 times. Over 50 is a lifetime goal for me.

Pause Squats- 135x5
225x3x3
315x2
Loose Belt
405x2
495x2
585x2<~~~ PR. Buried and smoked them
605x2<~~~ PR. Cut them a hair higher than 585. I don’t care. It was over 600 pounds… and a pause squat… and it was training. So, eff you.
605x3x1

Suitcase Deads- up to 405x1. I need to get back up to where I was with these.

That’s it. Stretched/foam rolled for about an hour this morning then went and got a full spine/hip adjustment and stim/ultrasound on my erectors, scaps, lats, and QLs before training. Rode up to Salisbury to train with Andy Deck. Man, that guy is awesome. Super strong, smart, and a really good friend to have. I really need to surround myself with more people to have good training/life conversations with.

Tonight: will do some light ab work, reverse hypers, ice bath, have a good cry, and get a shit load of sleep.

If you are wondering where all my free time came from today, it’s because I called out of work for no reason whatsoever. As whiney wiener guy this sounds, I needed a personal day. There is some shit going on that has been really dragging me down lately and I just really needed a perfect training day. It helped tremendously.

Thanks, man. I have completely stopped giving a shit how I feel. That is helping the training process. haha.
Old school mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.
This thought process is literally the only reason I am still alive right now. Especially in light of recent events. I have taken quite a high amount of getting shitted all over recently. Well, no matter what changes, who comes and goes, and what random, totally senseless fucked up events life throws my way, there is always training. I have started to realize the only thing we have in this life is ourselves and the bodies we inhabit. That’s it. There is literally zero control over EVERYTHING else. People always say “don’t worry about the things you can’t control.” I am taking that to a different level. I am going to completely and wholeheartedly not give a fuck about everything I can’t control. I am just going to work hard and keep moving forward…

and train my fucking ass off.
That’s why I like you. I’d trade my 3rd nut to train with someone half as passionate as you. I hope out of the darkness PR’s rain down on you!

+1 nice article… Ive always pulled conv style… gonna give sumo a run for awhile.

Ah man I’ve done that exact thing before. I bet a bunch of us have.

Is your next log going to be titled “Hedlesky’s Ok, I’ve mentally imploded so far that my soul is now an infinitely dense singularity that sucks all manner of being into another dimension”? Might be too long.

Rooting for you to fucking kill it at World’s.

To echo some others, thanks for your deadlift article. Really high quality stuff; seriously helpful to me personally as well. I hope you keep putting out articles. Also the “about the author” was hilarious. Something like “Mike has spiraled down a meat staircase of insanity and hopes to one day rejoin the real world”.

And another thing, my training partner and I were at the Arnold this year and they had this Fat Gripz expo set up. It was the Fat Gripz Extreme (the pinkish ones) on a bar and you had to deadlift it double overhand. My friend is a 600+ pound deadlifter at 181, and it was some bullshit amount of weight on the bar so he was like “pfft I got this”. Couldn’t fuckin move it lol!

Seriously if any of you people following Mike’s log haven’t tried some kind of double overhand heavy deadlift with a much thicker than normal bar, give it a go. It like doesn’t even make sense how much harder it is.

I am really psyched to try these now.

man, andrew was their head strength coach and he is nowhere near as qualified as you. he’s not as qualified as myself and im nowhere near your qualifications, you should be money in the bank. if you do get that job don’t worry man, there is a lot of big $ down there. I think there is also an API in crofton and severna park plus something else in bmore region. plenty of options man. what happened to emt work?

Hedlesky’s Failed Home Sex Change Operation But Now Gives Less Of A Shit Log. Something like that.

Thanks man. Training is really coming together right now. It’s kinda scary actually haha.

I agree, man. I don’t know what the exact mechanism is to explain why overhand pulling sucks. I think it has something to do with a lot of torque being lost when the pressure from your hands aren’t countering eachother… or maybe it just sucks. I don’t know.

Glad you enjoyed the article, bud.

That was hanging up in a gym I manage until I ripped it off the wall and fired everyone that allowed it to be there for so long.
