Heavy Metal Thread (and Associated Genres)

I’m into anything that sounds interesting. Had lots of friends into this kind of shit in school so I was exposed to lots of different genres even though no one knew what they were singing about but there were lots of angry kids I knew lol. Lots of guys liked punk. Operation Ivy wasn’t bad. Carcass(not punk) had one really good album called Heartwork.

I wish kids were into metal nowadays. I hesitate to call it a dying genre, but interest regarding rock/metal and punk seems to be dying within my demographic.

There’s still a niche audience, but for the majority it’s mumble rap, whatever’s on the radio and/or hip hop.

I always stuck out like a sore thumb with my musical tastes. A few of the edgier kids would be into stuff like my chemical romance or pierce the veil (typically girls). But ask a teenager about iron maiden, they’ll typically answer “???”

Oh, we didn’t have much rap that was popular here back then. Only knew about Vanilla Ice and the guys that did Fuck The Police. Can’t even remember the band name. Kids usually liked the stuff you could use to fuck around in the mosh pit on weekends just to let off steam.

Are you sure? The band name is pretty iconic, albeit not a name I’d pronounce in person or type out on here.

Also, mumble rap isn’t like vanilla ice/NWA (I think I can probably use the abbreviation? Right)

I know some of the members like Ice Cube and Dre but I can’t recall the band name since I only heard one song from them at the time.

EDIT:

Ok, I googled them. The word means nothing to us here lol. I’d never even met a black dude until I was 18. He was Kenyan so he didn’t give a fuck either.

This is mumble rap

To ME it’s the worst thing ever. It’s the most basic, simplistic music imaginable. I don’t judge music tastes, but it seriously irks me to see kids moshing out to this

It also annoys me that THIS is what we play at parties now as opposed to blink 182, sum 41, bowling for soup, a day to remember etc.

If I had my way we’d be playing AC/DC, the chats, the ramones and black flag at large scale gatherings. Shit always flies off the handle when the wilder music cracks into gear at concerts. It’s fun to get lost in the chaos, parties included (aside from property destruction, not into that).

The band name (abbreviation) is n.w.a (for fuck the police).

I can see why they call it mumble rap. I couldn’t make out a single word he was saying despite him repeating the same phrase(I think) several times.

That’s pretty much what a LOT of mumble rap consists of

One phrase getting mumbled over and over to a mundane, simplistic and repetitive beat. And these guys make MILLIONS from it

Excellent choice here, I’ve always liked that they have the melodic pop punk songs to hook people on their albums, but can do some pretty heavy stuff too. The song that introduced me to them was No Reason - it was on the NFL Street 2 video game soundtrack.

I was introduced to them via “in too deep” from many films within the 2000s aimed towards teenagers.

Never paid much attention as I thought of them as being generic pop punk… couldn’t have been more wrong

Green Day released a single at one point that veered towards “melodic hardcore” territory

Suppose it made sense given the subject matter present within the song

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, look at that. You’ve read my mind

#telekenesis

I’ve created this thread for people to talk about anything related towards heavy metal… including disdain towards heavy metal I suppose.

There is a distinct difference between say… death metal, power metal, Christian metal etc. Not all heavy metal caters towards violence, negativity and other abberations of which you’ve mentioned. If you wish to listen to metal or even punk aimed more towards positivity I can link up quite a few bands.

As to rap, I’m personally not a fan. But to state “rap” is degenerate is also an oversimplification as many sub-branches of rap music exist, including Christian rap.

If I may ask, what music are you into? If talking about impulsivity/hedonism = degeneracy you’ve shunned the majority of contemporary mainstream music as well as heavy/hip-hop music… I suppose church choir music is fairly tame, but to listen to during exercise, car rides, at gatherings etc it doesn’t hold up.

Iron maiden (i.e 666 number of the beast) would be out, as would Judas Priest (breaking the law talks about breaking the law, beyond the realms of death = talking about suicide etc)

I’ll be honest @BrickHead I have a hard time taking those who dislike metal because it’s “degenerate” due to subject matter seriously. This isn’t a knock at you, I just think it’s ridiculous to single out metal/rap when the majority of mainstream music caters towards talking about similar hedonistic behaviour (though metal/punk is quite unique regarding a penchant for violence).

I also find it rather offensive when someone calls my music degenerate, thereby inferring that I am a degenerate. Despite preaching acceptance and forgiveness, the religious crowd generally tend to harbour some of the most judgemental, condescending and least accepting people I know. This is one of the pivotal reasons as to why I’m not a fan of organised religion. It’s been used historically as an excuse to justify countless atrocities #spanishinquisition. That and (@dt79 has touched on this with Islam) I believe in comparison to modern society religion has remained too conservative, granted you’ve got reform branches (in relation to Judaism).

I’m sure you legitimately believe I’m a heathen based upon our prior discussions, but I’m not. My moral compass dictating my actions towards others is fairly pure. I’d directly never harm anyone, I’d never steal, rape, murder, intentionally and maliciously hurt (emotionally or physically) anyone. I don’t intentionally lie, manipulate and I always try picture myself within someone else’s shoes/empathise with others prior to showcasing judgement and/or breaking off a relationship with someone, and this has been an especially difficult concept for me to grasp given I’m autistic. Despite this, I’ve made tremendous efforts to improve because I don’t like the idea of perhaps accidentally hurting someone else’s feelings. But I’m a degenerate because I listen to a certain type of music and because I don’t believe premarital sex, smoking pot in my own time or homosexuality is sinful… straight out of the 1960s…

To definitively call someone degenerate over something as trivial as the music they listen to seems overzealous to me. Listening to music isn’t a test of character, music is a diverse and divisive spectrum. Very few people like extreme music, hence the argument that hedonistic indulgence always feels best doesn’t add up.

This is melodic death metal and it certainly isn’t particuarly degenerate regarding lyrical substance. Not as uplifting or as motivational as power metal per se, but it isn’t horrific like mayhem, cannibal corpse etc

My journey into metal began with hardcore bands like Ignite when I was in high school. My dad would always listen to Zep, Deep Purple and Rainbow when I was growing up so i was always exposed to heavier rock / metal.

I remember liking Iron Maiden as a kid, but never really got into metal. I really dug bands like Queens of the Stone Age, who have some heavier songs (How to Handle a Rope / Mexicola / Songs for the Dead / Someone’s In the Wolf, etc.) but in the early 2000’s I tried to get into numetal (it’s what a lot of my friends were into) but just couldn’t and stayed relatively stagnant.

Then I started to really listen to Maiden about the time Final Frontier came out and I explored their back catalog quite extensively. I had a taste for their proggier stuff (SSOASS / Isle of Avalon is one my favorite songs by them) so started exploring more prog oriented rock and metal

bands like Dream Theater have some great songs - I really love Bridges in the Sky:

Also listen to a lot of Opeth (old and new) their new album In Cauda Venenum has some good heavy shit:

Dignity - which I think has a classic Deep Purpleish vibe to it

and their older stuff is fantastic for a lot heavier, more aggressive style

The Leper Affinity:

Recently have been listening to Caligula’s Horse’s new album Rise Radiant

Also, through Opeth I started listening to Steven Wilson’s stuff and Porcupine Tree - so far my favorite album from them is Deadwing

and I sprinkle in some Viking metal in there like Amon Amarth - some other stuff thrown in there like Ghost, Metallica, etc. Always looking for new music to listen to…

@dt79 if you’re into instrumentals I’d recommend Plini

And John Petrucci just came out with a solo (instrumental) album with Mike Portnoy on drums which is pretty good. Also recommend Liquid Tension Experiment (they put out 2 albums) with Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess (keyboardist for Dream Theater) and Tony Levin (King Crimson, et al.)

All fantastic prog metal instrumental stuff

Amon Amarth is mellodeath isn’t it? The lyrical composition tends to have Viking metal undertones, but the musical style is melodic death metal (I think)

I love opeth, both the older progressive death metal opeth and the newer prog rock opeth

My fav song by them is Blackwater park

Have you ever heard Bathory? (Viking metal, but was originally black metal)

@brickhead this song isn’t bad. I’m not sure if you’ve put off metal entirely or just black/death/thrash. It’s Viking metal, lyrics aren’t NSFW. Def not positive or uplifting, but not blatantly inappropriate either

I’ve drifted away some, but these are always on rotation…

Every Time I Die
In Flames
Refused
Children of Bodom
Pissed Jeans (more punk, but “The Bar Is Low” is superb)
The Damned Things
Zeal & Ardor

I have all of them and like them a lot more than Dream Theatre. This song blew my mind when from the 2.41 mark.

I even have that album with only keyboards and guitar that he did live with Rudess. It’s wasn’t bad,
