Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, look at that. You’ve read my mind
#telekenesis
I’ve created this thread for people to talk about anything related towards heavy metal… including disdain towards heavy metal I suppose.
There is a distinct difference between say… death metal, power metal, Christian metal etc. Not all heavy metal caters towards violence, negativity and other abberations of which you’ve mentioned. If you wish to listen to metal or even punk aimed more towards positivity I can link up quite a few bands.
As to rap, I’m personally not a fan. But to state “rap” is degenerate is also an oversimplification as many sub-branches of rap music exist, including Christian rap.
If I may ask, what music are you into? If talking about impulsivity/hedonism = degeneracy you’ve shunned the majority of contemporary mainstream music as well as heavy/hip-hop music… I suppose church choir music is fairly tame, but to listen to during exercise, car rides, at gatherings etc it doesn’t hold up.
Iron maiden (i.e 666 number of the beast) would be out, as would Judas Priest (breaking the law talks about breaking the law, beyond the realms of death = talking about suicide etc)
I’ll be honest @BrickHead I have a hard time taking those who dislike metal because it’s “degenerate” due to subject matter seriously. This isn’t a knock at you, I just think it’s ridiculous to single out metal/rap when the majority of mainstream music caters towards talking about similar hedonistic behaviour (though metal/punk is quite unique regarding a penchant for violence).
I also find it rather offensive when someone calls my music degenerate, thereby inferring that I am a degenerate. Despite preaching acceptance and forgiveness, the religious crowd generally tend to harbour some of the most judgemental, condescending and least accepting people I know. This is one of the pivotal reasons as to why I’m not a fan of organised religion. It’s been used historically as an excuse to justify countless atrocities #spanishinquisition. That and (@dt79 has touched on this with Islam) I believe in comparison to modern society religion has remained too conservative, granted you’ve got reform branches (in relation to Judaism).
I’m sure you legitimately believe I’m a heathen based upon our prior discussions, but I’m not. My moral compass dictating my actions towards others is fairly pure. I’d directly never harm anyone, I’d never steal, rape, murder, intentionally and maliciously hurt (emotionally or physically) anyone. I don’t intentionally lie, manipulate and I always try picture myself within someone else’s shoes/empathise with others prior to showcasing judgement and/or breaking off a relationship with someone, and this has been an especially difficult concept for me to grasp given I’m autistic. Despite this, I’ve made tremendous efforts to improve because I don’t like the idea of perhaps accidentally hurting someone else’s feelings. But I’m a degenerate because I listen to a certain type of music and because I don’t believe premarital sex, smoking pot in my own time or homosexuality is sinful… straight out of the 1960s…
To definitively call someone degenerate over something as trivial as the music they listen to seems overzealous to me. Listening to music isn’t a test of character, music is a diverse and divisive spectrum. Very few people like extreme music, hence the argument that hedonistic indulgence always feels best doesn’t add up.
