And yes, I’m working on finding that full-page article about the 600lb bench by the high school dude, so hold your jabs until I find it.
Don’t bother, we all know it’s bullshit.
Oh, yeah, I’m making the whole thing up so I can garner respect from you and maybe make a few friends and get laid.

Whatever the weight was it was sick-fucking-huge for a 175 punder and you’ll see a copy of it as soon as I find it. This wasn’t a 400 pound bench. So give me a week or 2 and come back here to apologize.

Listen buddy, I have know some of the greatest powerlifters ever. I’ve worked on some of them and seen big lifts in person. I don’t care if it’s in a newspaper, it’s still bullshit. It never happened, you are wrong. or making shit up.

You ever talk to Ed Coan, or work on him? You ever lift at Westside or post on Dave tate’s q&A?

I’ve been in this game and involved with it since 1982, and no 175 pound guy did a raw lift with 71 more pounds than maybe the greatest lifter ever who at the time held the world record bench. I’ve seen world record lifts and they’re not done by random kids in gyms.

Do it in meet. Also, here are some raw benchers at that time with recorded meet benches over or at 600 pounds. Jonh Kuc, Bib Jim Williams, and Doug young, all done at 275+ pounds. Mike MacDonald at app 242. Paul dicks did one at app 220, I think 612, with a bench shirt. but back in the day, they didn’t help much.

Kaz did some and would have been the first guy to hit 700 if he didn’t tear his pec at a WSM contest. He did 661 at app. 275-300 lbs.

Jim Williams did do 700 in front of credible witnesses, but not in a meet. He was over 300 pounds.

And the first guy to ever hit 600 pounds was Pat Casey who tripped the scales at 275-310.

All of these guys were at least 45 pounds heavier and most were 100 pounds or more heavier than this mythical high school kid. Now if his name was Peter Parker i might believe it,but this is the biggest BS story I have heard in a long time.

High school. Guy who was one year ahead of me at St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake MI. Kevin “KC” Clouse. I believe he was 5’7" and weighed 175. He bent the bars in the gym and I believe he did 600 pounds+ because I remember that he benched 3.5 times his bodyweight. This was 1983, maybe earlier, and I remember that there were 6 big plates on each side along with 4 of the biggest dudes in the school spotting him. (OLSM was and still is a real “jock” school, producing many All-Americans for a school that had only 250 guys.) This was his bench, not his squat.

There was an entire page about KC in the Detroit Free Press (or the News) about how he was one of the strongest guys in the world at that time pound-for-pound.

I really wish I had saved that newspaper because I’m sure a lot of people won’t believe this.
I’m from the area, and have heard the stories about him, even though I’m still a senior in HS. I believe your facts are a bit misconstrued though, the storys I’ve heard was that it was around 440 Raw and pushing the mid 500s with a benching shirt and all.

One of the jocks that was there thinks it was 500 pounds and a TV crew was there. I’m waiting to hear back from KC’s brother (who’s the football coach at St. Mary’s) for a date of the article so I’ll stop posting until I have it.
Again, the article is bullshit. I was also a national referee in powerlifting. I have seen many lifts, and it’s funny how these guys never lift in meets as another fella stated.

The best lift I ever saw back in my school years was a raw 385 in the 148s. This guy Carl Schacte, sp, ended up benching app 415 at 148, in about 1984-85 this was one of the biggest benches ever.

The pure amount of muscle on these guys has to be seen to understand. Rick Weil for instance was a 165 pound guy who was flirting with a 500 pound bench. he was a house, and he flirted with five never getting it. And this guy just does 600? Again, BS.

Here’s a 16yr old kid benching 05 at 190-ish. He’s got vids of him benching 370+ at 175 when he was 15. That’s pretty goddamned strong, and probably more in-line with what your buddy could do.

Your buddy may have been floating around the low 4-hundos, but I’d be willing to bet the deed to my car that he wasn’t close to 500. Yes there are anomaly’s, but statistics don’t lie man.
