As @Drew1411 said above, people lie about themselves to make themselves look good or just because reality often looks tedious in comparison. On a large scale, that’s media painting an incorrect picture of a country. On a small scale, people misrepresent themselves on social media.

The magnifying effect here also being that people tend to start off with an incorrect perspective of themselves, and then embellish that even further.
You could be some overweight late 30s dude that eats too much Chick fil-a and convince yourself that you’re pretty jacked by spending time looking at yourself in a dark room at specific angles, and then you go a little bit further and say you look like a more muscular version of @flipcollar

Yeah, separate the tongue in cheek element to it, I mean what I wrote in full sincerity. We’re all the hero in our own narratives, and we tend to give ourselves excuses, leeway and forgiveness that we would not grant to others.
