Hatton to be Trained by Mayweather Sr

I couldn’t be happier about this.

Hatton hires Mayweather Sr. as trainer

Junior welterweight boxer Ricky Hatton said on Wednesday that he has hired Floyd Mayweather Sr. to train him for his next fight.

The decision has Hatton (44-1, 31 knockouts) working with the father of the only man to defeat him in the ring. Floyd Mayweather Jr. stopped the Briton in 10 rounds in December 2006.

“At this stage of my career I am not going to change my style too much, but you are never too old to learn,” said Hatton. “I have spoken with my team and we are all sure that I’ll benefit from Floyd’s incredible knowledge.”

The Manchester native will be fighting Paulie Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs) in a 140-pound bout on Nov. 22 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Hatton, who will turn 30 in October, has spent his entire pro career with trainer Billy Graham. The pair split up after a decision victory over Juan Lazcano in May, during which Hatton was stunned on two separate occasions.

Hatton and Graham have offered differing accounts as to the cause of the split.

The decision to hire Mayweather Sr. raises certain logistical questions. The trainer also works with Oscar De Le Hoya, who will fight at the Grand on Dec. 6 against Manny Pacquiao. De La Hoya has preferred in recent years to set up camp in Puerto Rico, where he lives.

De La Hoya used Freddie Roach as a trainer and not the father when he lost a 12-round decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2007, the most lucrative boxing match of all time.

A rematch was planned for September, but Mayweather Jr. made a surprising retirement announcement. The undefeated fighter has a fractious relationship with his father and is trained by his uncle, Roger Mayweather.

What can you see Mayweather adding to Hattons game Irish?

What OMC said, you’re the resident boxing guy so speak on it son! lol

Personally I don’t forsee them changing his game very much just working him a lot harder conditioning-wise and he’s going to sharpen things that hatton gets a little sloppy on.

Hatton’s reflexes are going to be a little faster with their unique form of padwork…

imo he won’t be any different he’ll just seem ‘sharper’.

Personally, I prefer Roach. I think he’s a better trainer and certainly has a smaller mouth. As a person, Mayweather is a pompous clown. As a trainer, anything is better than Graham.

I think that any improvement from Hatton makes will stem from Billie’s shitness more than Floyd’s brilliance. ANYONE that can get Hatton to take his diet and conditioning seriously ALL YEAR LONG will make great strides with him.

Well, here’s the way I see it.

After 45 fights, Ricky is an old dog in the boxing game. He’s been through his wars and has his style of fighting, which is the swarming mauler type of infighter.

However, since beating Kostya Tszyu, he’s gone downhill. He beat Tszyu because he didn’t try to box him, but swarmed around him and pounded incessantly.

That’s not how Ricky always fought. When he fought Ben Tackie he managed to stay behind a jab, and even moved away after throwing his flurries. That’s somethat that he hasn’t done in a while.

Though defeating Tszyu was the best thing for Ricky’s career, it was the worst thing for his fighting style because he changed it to straight brawling when, once upon a time, he was quick and harder to hit.

I think Floyd can bring that back. I think Ricky can learn head movement, and can learn to work behind his jab while he’s moving in instead of keeping his fucking hands at his waist and lunging with hooks.

The KO by PBF and the staggering Laczano gave him in the late rounds (although Ricky won handily) shook Ricky I think, and he realized that, for once of all times assholes say this, he’s a great fighter in spite of his training.

I think Mayweather Sr. will bring out the best, and I think you should all put your money on Hitman for the Malignaggi fight.

Look at the difference between his earlier fights.

This is Ricky’s fourth fight:

Another from 2002 against Stephen Smith. Look at the sharp shots, the ducking, coming in behind a double jab even:

Now look at him against Kostya:

Holds more, throws less. Great strategy against Kostya, but not against others.

Abandoned his boxing skills for heavy hooks.

Watch Floyd bring them back.

Nice assesment Irish…you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I still believe the solution for Hatton is a simple one… treat his training as a lifestyle, not as a precursor to fights.

That is a big part of it.

Hatton reaps rewards of new training regime

LONDON (AFP) ?? Ricky Hatton believes his decision to axe trainer Billy Graham and hire Floyd Mayweather Snr has given him a new lease of life.

Hatton recently split with Graham after 11 years and is already reaping the rewards after his first two training sessions with Mayweather Snr, who helped the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Chad Dawson and Joan Guzman fulfil their potential.

Now the English fighter will spend two weeks training with Mayweather Snr in Manchester before flying to Las Vegas on October 16 ahead of his bout with IBF light-welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on November 22.

“Floyd has come in and given me a new lease of life,” Hatton said. "He’s slowed me down and given me a more subtle approach.

"I was up at 6am this morning, Floyd came to my house and I ran five miles around Gee Cross in Hyde with dumb bells in my hands.

"Floyd was side by side with me all the way - in a Range Rover I might add - saying, ‘Come on, jab, jab, step off, one-two!’.

"It was hard because it’s very hilly where I live but because it was new I got a buzz from it.

"As soon as we got back to my house he jumped out the car and we did a little bit of sparring.

"I’ve got to get used to him calling the shots and the different combinations, plus I need to get to know him as a person and as a coach.

“I took him with me to the Manchester City versus Liverpool game, we had a meal and I think he enjoyed himself.”

Hatton admitted he should have changed trainers sooner and added: "Billy thought he could continue training me but I had to be man enough to say no because it just wasn’t possible.

"Everyone was telling me to leave him earlier and I think it’s clear because, slowly but surely, everyone else left him.

“I couldn’t do it because of how I had such a close relationship with him but when Matthew (Hatton’s brother) left I knew I had to be a man and leave as well.”
