Just wondering if anyone trains in a place that has hard wood or engineered wood floors? I’ve seen a few places that have hard wood and for what ever reason I think it looks nice. I’m thinking about putting wood flooring in my basement gym and other than dropping weights on it are there any down sides or up sides to this idea?
I would put rubber down in one section as a drop zone.
As long as your basement never floods, plus if it’s concert you may have to put in a sub floor. Other than that, moisture is the only concern I can think of.
Have you looked at engineered wood flooring? Solid hardwood on concrete and below grade will require a significant subfloor (more than just a sheet of 3/4 plywood) and vapor barrier to keep it from warping or buckling. While engineered flooring is not the same as a solid hardwood floor, it is going to get you pretty damn close. Plus you can install it directly over the existing concrete.
Besides, given that you are going to use and abuse the flooring, why spend the extra cash prepping the subfloor? I would have serious doubts about using laminate flooring. It is essentially plastic flooring that is not exactly durable and will likely not hold up to any serious abuse. In a situation like you have described, I would bet that you would be replacing laminate in under five years. Five year flooring IMO, is a waste of green.

I didn’t realize there was a difference between engineered flooring and laminate (purgo style)? I will certainly have to do more looking into this before I throw down the money but I’m pretty sold on the idea. I agree that 5 year flooring is a waste, thanks for the info!
If there is a particular area that is going to take a lot of abuse, say where you do deads, you might want to consider not installing the wood floor there and go straight to rubber-since you will just be putting the rubber over the floor. If you can get them level, there is less trip hazards and could look pretty cool.

Check Tractor Supply, if you have one in your area. Just did my basement weightroom with 3/4" 4x6 rubber mats for $40 a piece. Built for horse stables, they are thick and heavy and appear built to last.
Might save yourself some work and will be much more durable. Just my thoughts…
I forget the exact price, but we put their cheapest ‘pergo’ imitation in our kids’ rooms. The rooms are about 20 by 20 and I’m pretty sure we did moisture barrier, flooring and molding for under 300 bucks per room. I put it in my bathroom, even though I knew it’d be ruined in 5 years because it only cost me 50 bucks.
