Hard-Loser

I??ve got a question. I am a post-amorexic male who is now trying to lose some of the fat that I have gained over the last few years. When I was 22 yrs old, I weighted 229 lbs. I started to reduce my caloric intake and trained exesively. The weight melted off my body, and I could not stop. Even though I never ate under 1700 kcals, I worked out for hours and ran for miles. At one time (25 yrs old) I weighted 94 lbs, that is when I was admitted to the hospital by family members and where I gained 13 lbs in 5 days by eating nothing by junk.

Well, now 28 yrs old and at 166 lbs with 8.8% body fat (which I don??t believe, even after caliper, under water, and measurement testing, I look more like 14-18%) I want to lose fat (not weight). After about 3 weeks on a fat lose diet (New Rules of Lifting protocol) I have gained half a pound, increase by body fat, lose muscle, become very weak, tired, foggy, and increse in anxiety. How would a post-anorexic attempt to lose fat? By body must be thinking ??what a minute, don??t even think about it, he trying to starve again, shut everything down NOW!?? No matter what I do (gain mass, fat loss, maintain) I am slowly getting fatter. I need to stop this now. Any suggestions. Thank you all for your time in reading this.

Underwater testing is about as good as it gets, and if you’re post anorexic chances are you are psychologically looking at yourself as fatter than you are, like a drug relapse of sorts.

Also, if you went down to 94 lbs, you may truly have very little muscle mass to speak of, so even at 8.8% bodyfat which should be impressive, you won’t have a lot of muscle to see “ripped.” Worst case scenario, you are 15% bodyfat, which is far from unhealthy, that’s a solid place to build some muscle from, which you almost certainly could use after being 94 lbs in the recent past.

hey, red04, you might be right, but how do I stop this fat gain? It is true that I am gaining fat pounds, nothing psychological about that.

Eat better(not necessarily less, just better), maintain a level of activity(assuming you found this site for a reason I’d say lifting some weight) to increase your caloric use.

Hey buddy i feel ya… was in the same situation except the anorexia hit in high school. Although I didn’t go as far down in weight as you did (I was around 120 for a 5’11’'), I certainly remember the mentality of, “Dang, I’m just skinny-fat now.” As Red04 said, just ease into it with good nutrition (better not less or more) and a workout plan to compensate for the added calories. As you let the body readjust itself, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how it reacts physique-wise.

I may be jumping the gun here… but if you get a chance look at the G-Flux article written by Berardi here. The principles in it helped me anyways in reforming my screwed up metabolism. Good luck!

I was 130 at 6’0" when I started high school, I didn’t even try to lose weight either, I ate like a normal kid. Must have been the growth spurt.

If you have a history of anorexia, and have been tested at < 10% bodyfat and think you need to lose fat, I think you really need to get some professional help before you relapse.

as far as eating better, I dont think I could eat any better. I dont eat ANY junk food. I havent eaten pizza, burgers, candy, or any dense empty caloric foods in years. I dont even have cake on my b-day. this strict diet stems from my anorexic day, which I still hold, but apply it to a 2,150 kcal diet. Like I said before, Im following the New Rules Of Lifting fat loss protocol, inwhich I have seen a gain and not a loss in fat weight.

Yea, at my worst, at 5-10 @94 lbs, it was not a good picture. All the doctors thought I had AIDS or something, the walking dead. But how much longer do I have to wait for my body to re-adjust itself, it has been years already. Damm I pissed. No results and a lot of hard work. I also got little results while bulking up with a 3-2 ratio of muscle to fat. It wasnt worth it to me anymore to try to gain size. I have read tonnes of literature on training and nutrition, and I have read the G-fulx articles.

But I have not tried it and will consider it, I have nothing to lose. Yes I’m skinny/fat. Skinny arms, you can see my veins and chicken legs, long and zero-fat, but all of my 8% or so of body fat located on my torso-abs, chest, spare-tire big time. Im even considering lyposuction or something. G-flux does sound promising, eat 3,000 burn 3,000.

Actucally I am seen a professional for the anxiety that I sometimes get. I have also had a long bout with insomnia with I am also discussing, although we dont talk about my weight. It just gets me angry that I am following the rules that should get me to a lean body, but it just doesnt work. I have been patient and I havent cheated or taken any shortcuts, I have sacrified much. so far, all for not.

You say you’ve been “following the rules that should get me to a lean body, but it just doesn’t work.” Post what you ate yesterday. Every bite of food that went into your mouth.

Now post your workout routine.

Then we can give you useful advice. It would help more if you posted a picture or two.

I’m sure a lot of former fatties on here have psychological issues with regard to any sort of weight gain. I was a chubby little kid, then started running track in high school and ended up downright skinny. When Everyone was telling me to eat more to gain muscle, there was always a little fear in the back of my mind that I’d get fat again. I’m sure I still suffer from some body dismorphia.

Here is the bottom line: a)You need as much lean muscle mass as you can pile on. b)You need to repair your metabolism. I notice you have Lee Jun Fan as your avatar, did you know he was a “hardgainer”?. The reason he looked ripped was because he built/maintained a large amount of LBM for his small frame, and he had to eat because of his fast metabolism…Are you seeing how this relates to you?…Think about it…

exactly, any other advice at this point will be pointless and possibly outside any of our scope’s of practice, even for an internet message board.

the measurments show I have <10% body fat, but I dont believe it, and even if it is, its located right on my abs. I will upload my diet (which I adhear to strictly), my training protocol (which I never miss)and one or two pics ( which I take every 4 weeks) soon.

actually, no. I most likely have a slow or moderate metabolism, definalty not a fast one. I dont think Lee was ever anorexic at any point in time. And speaking of G-Flux, Lee’s must have been enormous!

I honestly think you need to talk to your therapist about this. If you’ve been tested with multiple methods and you still don’t believe them, I think your self image is most likely distorted. It is dangerous for us to give someone with your history help on losing fat. I wish you the best man, but don’t let it snowball, get control of it now.

Yes sure, I was fearfull of getting fat my just eating and I still hold on to some of that fear due to the fact that I was over-weight and I know that if you eat more that you burn you will gain fat. But I have eaten more, my fear of eating fat and getting fat has been reduced and I have proven this by actually getting fat. What I see in the mirror is not what you see, when you see me. I will post pics.

OK, this sound like a good idea. I will bring up the issue with my therapist, but are many peoples self image alittle distorted, dont people want to strive for perfection when they know they may never achieve it. I know I will never have the body of “Bruce Lee, Arnold, ect” but I am gunning for it and I am going to give it a shot. It would not be the first time I failed. I guess Im greedy in this aspect in my life. I dont care for money, luxury, or any other material wants, I just want to be lean, to see my abs for christ sakes.

this is my Monday-Friday eating plan. On M-W-F are my weight training days, while T-T-Sat are my cardio days. “X” indicates that I reduce the item on my cardio days. I do add salsa, mustard, pepper, Stevia, and green-tea.
