Like them0fo, I am also looking for decent gyms. I am moving from Virginia USA to Bristol Uk in a couple of months and I have visited Bristol with sad news about gyms. Can anyone suggest any? I could not find a real one in the few days I was there.
Thanks

Your best bet is to hop in a car and drive across to the University of Bath, and use the sports training village (STV) there…

Dumbells up to 60kg, 5 power cages, 8 olympic lifting platforms and a tonne of other stuff. Its all there for the athletes that train there, its pretty decent

Not true, there’s a good David Lloyds in Enfield. A lot of olympic bars, plates, power cages etc. But it’s too far from me, and it’s expensive.

LR

sounds awesome

Another Scot. Not on the forums much but on the site and read the articles all the time.

I train in a Fitness First, Kilmarnock. The name says it all but it has a squat rack and DB’s up to 50KG (not bad for a ‘fitness’ gym), and the staff really don’t care what the hell you do, so you bring in chalk, bands, etc. YOu just get curious looks and the odd shake of the head from stuck up members. It’s got better recently though, for some reason more lifters that actually lift heavy stuff have been coming in so it almost has an atmosphere. Ok no it doesn’t really, but I can dream.

I’d second muscleworks in Bethnal Green…some huge bastards in there.

Oh, btw if you’re in Scotland and Bodybuilding is your thing there’s a very bodybuilderish gym in Paisley - Pro Life Fitness Centre it’s called. Pretty good, it has a cafe, you can get shakes, hot food, and beer (woohoo!). Not to mention, you can order a smoothie with a shot of protein. This is the kind of thing that amuses me.

Seems to have all the bodybuilder requirements. A million smith machines and leg presses. OK i’m joking about that, but it only has one rack, but, 2 smith machines, 2 leg presses (not including the crappy lever leg press) which really surprised me. I hated the place for it until I learned I could get ‘shots’ of protein in things at the cafe. It also has loads of Olympic bars which is also good. Anyway, there’s a lot of competing bodybuilders that train in there, it’s quite well known for that, I believe. The owner of the gym is a former Mr Scotland. It’s just next to Glasgow Airport - about a 2 minute drive from there,in an industrial estate (always a good sign).

This is where Ronnie trained once when he was in London right? Ever train at Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club?

LR

total fitness wilmslow, top gym for training heavy, except dumbells only go up to 60kg, no shrugs then. Marple Fitness Centre is a nice hardcore gym. In term time, i train at uni gym Birmingham. For the guy asking about South Manchester gym, please don’t splash out 40 quid for the shit called Virgin, that place just doesn’t allow hard training. Come to Total Fitness, or go to Kerry Kayes gym up near Hyde/Denton.

Of all places, why the hell would you move to Bristol?

Not much of a choice. Job at the Univ.

hey man thanks for the Offer! I will check it out in google and then get back to you.

Try “G’s Weightlifting Gym” in Acton. Pure hardcore.

Ok,it’s north london, mate,so pack your best bulletproof vest and head over to Dowe Dynamics opposite Archway station-cross the road to the Archway Tavern (a fine pub,by the way) or park outside (a free car park! in london) It’s right opposite the pub,on the same roundabout.

I’m giving you directions cos most motherfuckers in the area won’t know it.It’s tucked away, like many of the best hardcore gyms-It’s run by Ian Dowe, former Mr. Great Britain, former Mr. Universe,Olympic competitor, etc.
I believe he is available for personal training,I know they have PT’s there.
It’s a bit grubby and shoddy, but most hardcore gyms are.
Dumbells go up to 90kg,lots of good equipment chosen by Ian himself.

He may just have good genetics, but in over 30 years of training,I think it’s fair to say he’s picked up a thing or two…(besides dumbells, lol)

Anyone here actually train at Muscleworks in Bethnal Green? Because I do, and it is every bit as awesome as people say! People just seem to know their gym etiquette and don’t do stupid shit around you when you are doing your set etc. Also, even on a bad day the atmosphere simply gets you pumped up.
