What about all of the other countries in the world that have much more restrictive gun laws but equally robust voting rights? Certainly they have figured out how to have one without the other.
I think one potential way that mandatory gun safety classes can prevent these types of mass shootings is by forcing violent, mentally ill would-be shooters to have a certain amount of face-time with instructors trained to spot red flags.
I don’t know much about the Uvalde shooter, but in many other high profile mass shootings, people who knew and even just came in contact with the eventual shooter in the days and weeks before the shooting have said that they exhibited strange and frightening behaviors. In some cases they make outright threats about their future actions. Read the “Background” and “Prelude” sections of the Wikipedia article about James Holmes and count how many people in his life said “there’s something wrong and scary about this guy” leading up to his massacre. Perhaps if he was forced to spend 50-100 hours in a classroom with an instructor trained to identify and actually report these behaviors, the shooting would have been prevented.
Apart from all juvenile criminal and psychological records should made available during background checks, I would say a military deferment might be a consideration as a pathway toward clearance to buy a firearm before the age of 21.
I will go so far as to say that any gun sales to an 18 year old that doesn’t include background check of all juvenile and psychological records is gross negligence. In fact if those records are not investigated, essentially there has been no background check at all.
All first time firearm buyers should have at least a 7 day waiting period. All future purchases could be a much shorter waiting period, if any at all.
How would the psychological records check work exactly?
Even a lady whose ex-husband is threatening to kill her? Does she tell him he needs to wait 7 days?
To start every applicant would need to waive their HIPAA rights.
On a lot of these things, I know people have good intentions, but once you open the door on these kinds of limits on Constitutional rights, you can’t shut that door. It will only get expanded further and further and it will soon apply to other rights as well. The second amendment specifically states the right to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed.” We’ve already allowed some infringements, and now people are calling for more and more. And some of these same people are starting to call for making some speech they don’t agree with a crime. We need to address mental health, we need to hold people who saw danger signs accountable for not bringing it to the police’s attention, we need to strengthen families.
Then it was never a right to begin with.
Knowing the origin of HIPAA, maybe that should be terminated
For COVID situations it seemed as though HIPAA has no teeth.
According to the latest reoprts, the shooter had no record…adult or juvi, therefore if thats the truth a background check would have found nothing
like i said before, the stories keep changing
airports, government offices, courthouses, sports arenas, corporate offices, power plants, celebrities all have law enforcement and security measures…its time that all schools have the same
This is an interesting take. Do you believe that there should be any limitations on the right to bear arms? Do you believe private citizens should be allowed to own rocket launchers? Anti aircraft missiles? Nuclear weapons? What about citizens that have previously been arrested for terrorist activity – should they have their right to bear arms infringed upon? I know some of these questions seem silly, but I’m legitimately curious where your line on this is.
Have they? What can they do if one party or faction decided to end it? What recourse do they have should everyone not play nice? The united states has citizens, all other nations have subjects.
This is a truly wild statement.
I suggest you take a look at this report by the Cato Institute which uses 82 distinct markers of personal and economic freedom to rank the countries of the world on what they call “The Freedom Index”: https://www.cato.org/human-freedom-index/2021. The countries that took the top 10 places, in order, were Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Canada and Finland (tied at 6), Australia, Sweden, and Luxembourg. America is tied for 15.
Perhaps the countries that are objectively more free than us have citizens and not subjects. Would you at least agree with that?
(As an aside, I want to point out that this report isn’t published by some hippy, liberal think tank. The Cato Institute is a Libertarian organization founded by fucking Charles Koch.)
Can i go to any of those nations listed and publish a book called " muhammed was a faggot?"
Weve definitely allowed our rights to be slowly chipped away, but there is still nowhere more free.
I mean… yeah, you can. Weird that that’s your ultimate measure of a free nation, though.
If you care about free speech, perhaps you would like to check out this ranking of countries with the greatest protections for free speech and expression. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for you, but America is tied for 13th with Luxembourg and Peru: Countries with Freedom of Speech 2023
Are you disagreeing with the people who have actually studied this in depth and published their results? What reasons do you have to believe that you are right and they are wrong?
There is probably no group that would be more critical of our country’s liberties than a Libertarian.
BTW, I am registered as Libertarian, but consider myself more of a Constitutionalist. (I strongly believe in the death penalty via the Noahic Covenant)
I completely agree. I also believe that they will be equally critical of other countries’ liberties.
After seeing how the government of those countries acted during the COVID pandemic…they are definitely not free countries
This conversation is blowing my mind a little bit. Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Estonia, and many, many other countries imposed fewer Covid restrictions than we had in the US. Sweden in particular very famously refused to impose a lockdown. Scroll down to “Government Stringency Index” here: Policy Responses to the Coronavirus Pandemic - Our World in Data
If the list you gave is any indication. Hell australia is ranked above the US. The place where 6 months ago they were forcing people into detention camps.
Yeah, America would never do that…
And you get your news from liberal outlets…thats hilarious ![]()
