Look dude, your not wrong in regards to personal defense training. There are numerous tools that a person can use to defend themselves. Now, if we are talking about defending numerous people in a school from rifle fire, Muay Thai wouldn’t be my top priority.
But you brought up open carry in a setting that wasn’t a school.
As an analogy to showcase firearms as a deterrent.

But there is no proof that it is an effective deterrent. Parkland had an armed deputy assigned to protect the students.
There’s one thing I don’t understand - people with authority on the subject have repeatedly stated that it takes a very special individual to run towards the sound of gunfire as it’s not a natural reaction and has to be acquired through rigorous training.
Parkand has shown that even several deputies cowered behind their vehicles instead of entering the school.
But an armed teacher, a Mrs. Lopez from civics with some basic federal gun handing program is supposed to grab her gun upon hearing shots and enter the hallway to engage the shooter?
Yes, during mass shootings there’s always a selfless hero - a student or a teacher that uses his body to protect students or block the door, but how many more are made of less sterner stuff?
I’d venture to say that the majority of those “armed teachers” would either freeze, stay put or simply frantically shoot at anything that moves.
Not to mention it would be a nightmare for LEOs to secure a school with a mass of armed civilians mostly randomly shooting left and right.

The Deputies likely have little to no training/experience doing such things; there seems to also be a Police Department there, and Officers are likely the ones that receive such training and have experience responding to violent situations. Deputies likely have experience sitting in court rooms and working the jail.
The hope behind having many armed good guys is that the bad guy will actually run into and threaten one of them. Defending oneself is different from running to gunfire to defend others. Every armed good guy increases the odds that the bad guy will force one to defend himself.

The answer is no…and yes…gun sales were some of the highest ever.

I encountered one of these in the wild recently. Politics came up because the person hosting the party had received a mailer for Rick Saccone, and without expressing support one way or the other said something like “they’re all crooks” - which another party-goer overheard, and treated us to his thoughts on W. Bush being the best president because of what he had to overcome, while Obama had never faced any real adversity.
More for a laugh than anything, I said “Um, other than people saying that he’s a Kenyan-born Muslim?”
He replied “Well, yeah, I’m still not sure he was born here.” (dead seriously)
I’d never encountered a real-live birther in the wild. Fascinating experience.

My sister in laws in laws still (to date) will say Obama is the Antichrist. I once asked why the hell Obama’s taking so long to bring about the end times.

Well, there were FOUR armed good guys at Parkland and all they did was play hide and don’t seek. And if they lacked training with weapons then why are they carrying? From what I’ve read they even had rifles in the vehicles they hid behind.
Correct, that’s the default position for our more progressive democrats.

I always tended to lean more towards the “Obama never intended to enact gun regs since he never said he intended to” kinda thing.
But then again, I’m sure assuming he was going to without him saying so and being able to subsequently critisize him for failing at something he may have never even been attempting is much more fun.
