Gun Policy in the USA

Unlike the Best President the U.S. has ever known currently occupying the White House…

Exactly, now you’re getting it!

Yeah, I was in this boat (at least, to my knowledge) until Saturday. I can totally live with people having different political views on whether someone was a good or bad politician, whether they enacted good or bad policy, and I think most others can, too.

I knew that some birthers probably existed, I’d just never actually met one. As pfury is alluding, the truth is that that birthers (and other similar stuff) are more likely to go unchallenged within a closed circle of people who all want to believe it, so it’s easier to perpetuate there, while you’d hear someone say that and push back a little bit. The more inbred (not literally, but you get the gist) your social circle is and the fewer overall ideas you’re exposed to, the worse you are at identifying credible information and the more likely you are to just swallow something that you want to believe whole.

A good buddy of mine from college started dating a girl from a small town that had earnestly never met anyone that believed in evolution over Creationism. We (college buddies) were all floored - not because she believed in Creationism over evolution (hey, believe what you want, there are separate threads on here to discuss that) but that she had never met anyone who thought otherwise. Making this doubly funny (to me, anyway): the guy is a PhD biomechanical engineer and cell biologist.

That’s pretty funny.

My first thought is where else would it happen but a place where everyone’s basic needs are met (for the most part) and people aren’t forced to struggle for anything?

The majority of my extended family are birthers. Don’t “believe in” evolution either.

That’s a sexy turn of phrase, whatever your political beliefs.

Speaking about running towards gunfire - one guy believes he has the answers:

Ya, I think that’s a great point.

I have bone spurs and they don’t stop me from running.

Kinda’ like he did against the Viet Cong?

Ok, Cadet Bone Spurs.

Edit: dammit, Zecarlo beat me to it.

I wanted to circle back to this, but haven’t read all of the posts so I might have missed it. This article is from a radiologist who works in a trauma center comparing the difference between assault rifles and ordinary handguns.

This isn’t an attempt to throw anything in your face, but I’ve seen your point above mentioned several times by others. (And for what it’s worth, I’d personally have no issue with you owning an assault rifle as you’re a Marine and adequately trained (provided you’ve got a clean record and don’t have major psychological problems). Hell, it wouldn’t bother me at all if someone like Idaho walked around with a bazooka strapped to his back.

But I do have a problem with the 19 year old with a fragile psyche who sits around playing Call of Duty all day and seething at the world.

This is a great question/point, surprised no one addressed it.

In my mind, the death of young/innocent by standers provides a vehicle for emotional appeals by the left and the media, and gun control advocates, and it’s disgusting.

We are selfish. It would be nice to see more focus on the suicide issue (I know there is already awareness), since that’s where it starts.

A guy who is willing to kill himself/die is dangerous, regardless of guns.

I’m was referring to it’s effectiveness as a military weapon, but, yes, when compared to a handgun firing a low caliber round (9mm) it is likely more lethal on paper anyway.

These are the people tasked to protect us plebs:

Listening to the audio of the meeting Trump had today. He literally used a line right out of the Obama playbook. In regards to banning bump-fire stocks, “If Congress won’t act then I will do it myself.” Not the way it’s supposed to work Mr. President. It was wrong under Obama and it would be wrong under you.

Was a bumpfire stock even used in this one? I can bumpfire a semi-auto rifle by hooking my finger on a belt loop and pulling the trigger into it.

I thought the effectiveness was only really in question at ranges outside of 150-200 yd? Inside that range, I thought the 5.56 was “superior” to 7.62 due to lower recoil, higher mag capacity, lower weight, etc? Unless you’re dealing with body armor or other defensive barriers.

I’m a civilian with no firsthand experience, just done some studying on the issue cause I find it insanely interesting.
