I’m by no means a gun person. But, will be getting a house in the next month, figured it might be a good time to get a gun. Sure this may cause a debate, but anyways. The wife has expressed interest in going to a shooting range anyways.
When I was a teenager my Dad was big into guns and had a few nice ones, AK-47, .44 single shot, Tech-9, Tech-22, .45
Out of all those I loved the Tech-9 the most. Not sure if that’s the right name or not, here’s the closes I’ve found on the net

Is this the normal going rate? Or should I try to go to a gun show and pick one up?
Do you want a gun for home protection purposes or just for shooting ranges? I’d go with a 12 gauge pump-action shotgun. They’re great for home protection (although a sawed-off barrel is preferable) and they’re ideal for shooting trap or skeet shooting. I’ve got a Weatherby Patrician II that’s served me well.
As far as handguns go, be conscious of the cost of ammo. I’ve got a .500 Magnum for boar hunting, but I rarely shoot it at the range since each bullet is about 3 bucks. I’ve always had a thing for revolvers. If you want a fun revolver, go with a .357 Magnum. You can save some money on ammo and use .38’s.

Stay away from the Tec9 - garbage.
Can’t go wrong with Glock, S&W or the new Springfield pistols. 9mm is good overall but I carry Glock in .40.
Never understood the AR pistols like the S&W 15/22 that you mention. As a rifle it’s awesome but as a pistol - awkward. It’s not meant for one handed firing.
I hate to break it to you but I don’t think you’ll be getting a tec-9 or probably anything thing like it in maryland. 'assault pistols" are regulated for sale.

agree that tec9 and clones are crap
agree that .40 is generally a better choice for a handgun round. however with the wide selection of defensive ammo availble today, it is easy to make up for the shortcomings found in the 9mm. plus with 9mm u generally get higher cap, and if you are CCW’ing you generally can have a smaller weapon with less worry about recoil management.

Yes because your unexplained hatred sounds so intelligent eye roll. There are pros and cons for every weapon for every type of situation and there is no perfect universal answer. As far as home defense goes a pump shotgun is a fairly solid choice. Depending on your state laws and model you can have anywhere from 3-8+1 shells. Buckshot or slugs should handle any penetration and destruction needs. The main problem with anything longer than a handgun is negotiating corners, super close range, and the very real possibility of over-penetration. That being said even small handguns will go through studs and/or several sheets of drywall.
The real problem with most self-defense shooting isn’t necessarily the firearm but the penetration and situational awareness(assuming we are talking about a trained individual). Your bullets needs to penetrate Mr. Prowler’s CNS but we don’t want it to go through the house and into lil Billy Headaway’s noggin.

WHY are you ‘negotiating corners’? are you a tac-team guy? are we kicking in doors in iraq?
we are talking about home defense. you’re in your room and you hear u’re door getting kicked in, you hear glass breaking, whatever.
why are you not crouched behind your bed, hi-capacity semi auto something aimed at your bedroom door, cops on the phone?
