Been thinking about it, talked it over with the family, and it looks like my son and I are going to take the next year or so to build an AR together. This is a āI want to spend some quality time with my boy doing something we both enjoy that heāll remember forever and I can give him when he is old enoughā thing)
With the AWB in MA I have to deal with, complete uppers are⦠Well my options are limited. Iāve started calling around to see if I can find a pre-ban lower (which will allow me to ignore the AWB rules) but my hopes arenāt high, and I have a feeling that will put me in the $200 (at least) for a striped used lower, which in a Free State I could get for like $30.
Anywho, anyone with experience here willing to let me bounce a couple questions by you?[/quote]
What year of mfg is āpre banā in the Peoplesā Republic of MA?

lmao, 9/13/94.
Iām like 99% sure finding a pre ban lower is going to be like finding a unicorn, but, it is worth of phone call.
The entire issue is the fucking āflash suppressorā and bayonet lug⦠One company calls a flash suppressor a mussel break and its legal, same fucking thing called a suppressor is illegal, both HAVE to be welded or pinned to the barrel as threads at the end of the barrel are very much a no-no in MA.
Adjustable stock would be nice, but in all reality I can just buy two, one for me, one for the wife with her short arms, and swap it on the range. Itās the threads at the end of the barrel that kill my options.
I havenāt had much luck finding a 5.56, 1:7, 16+" barrel without threads⦠Plus that means assembling the entire upper rather than buying one pre-built. Which might be over my head, lol.

I bet I can find one. Hold up.
Might not be much help, but the Shotgun News has articles on building ARās all the time. I donāt know if you can find old articles on the web or not.

Or just buy a complete weapon and strip it and replace everything:

Your best bet might be calling a retailer and letting them find the barrel for you. Theyāll have a much better idea whats out there than you will.

Yeah, the FFL down the street I like a lot, real young guy, takes his time with you, and gave my wife a discount because I give him my business*. So I plan on using him for some stuff, the lower obviously has to come from him lol, it has to be registered. But, heāll also want a $25 fee and a markup soā¦
Iām going to ask the dude if he wants me to do his books in trade for ammo, lol, next time I have an hour to shoot the shit with him.
edit:*or wants to bone her⦠either way the pistol was a good price.

$700?
Holy shit. I could get a premium 18" barrel and mill off the threads for that price, lol. (Assuming that wouldnāt f-up the integrity of the barrel.)
Guess Iām working in the AWB arena, lol.

Yeah, but I think you could hook up 30 round mags to this, depending how the MA ban works ā but they have to be āpre banā too, I bet.
Can you just mill a lower yourself to get around pre-ban? There are kits and it is painfully easy to do. Also, no serial numbers.

Mags have to be pre-ban in addition to the receiver. (Therefore if the gun wasnāt manufactured pre ban, there is zero pre-ban mags for it, so all are illegal. None of the Magpul mags can be pre-ban, etc.)

Would still be subject to the AWB as it wasnāt lawful owned pre-ban. And would be looking at a felony if ever got pressed without it registered. Have a lot of LEO and former LEO at my range. (Fair amount of CIA & FBI on top of local, lol.)
Youāve been around these in the service, how hard is the upper to put together?
Iām thinking I will get a kit for the random parts, and get a free float rail (assume the boy will want that) and a complaint barrel/break and just toss that in the kit and toss the barrel that comes with the kit in the safe for another day. My dad says he can pin the front gas block and mussel break for me, but donāt want to spend $200 on a barrel and fuck it up either, lol.

I can literally do it blindfolded.
There are step-by-step videos on how to do this all day long. Just buy some rifle mags (the paper ones I mean ā like at Barnes & Noble) and look at the ads in the back.
I would probably buy a complete kit (less the lower) and just have at it.
Anyone who can put together a model airplane can put together an AR-15.

To clarify this:
Say the S&W Shield wasnāt manufactured until 2001, it couldnāt possibly have a legal mag over 10 rounds in MA. The gun wasnāt manufactured pre ban. However, if you have date stamped (assuming it isnāt bullshit) 30 round mags for your AR that are stamped 1991, they would be legal to have in MA.
The onus for proving the age of mag, how you would do it, or if the state is out looking for this are all gray areas Iām not overly familiar with. However, you get in trouble for something else, theyāll put you away with the mandi sentence for the 30 round mag while they build the case for the other crimeā¦
Get this, it is also a gray area with the receiver. The lower is all I have to register. So I buy a stripped, register, build the rifle over the next 12 months⦠Do I have to āre-registerā? Answers will vary, lol.
I need to move to a Free State.

Look for a Bull barrel or Target barrel. Fluting is nice, a recessed crown is also a good idea.

And from what I understand, I can buy 3 or 4 different kits (not that I would) and all the parts will fit together as long as I have a common gas length system right?
I ask because Iāll be getting a barrel separate from the kit (or complete upper) and swapping it out.

Thank you sir.
While a target or any barrel without a break will look āoffā on what the boy is going to want the rest of the rifle to look like, staying away from felony charges is most important.
You guys should see what I have to do to transport to the range, lmao.

Theoretically. I would just go get a Windham kit (my persona favorite) or one of the higher end kits, just in case.
