Gun Love Thread

Chime in? Well, the only thing I can say is shoot as many guns as you can and find the ones you like the best. I learned a lot about myself by learning which gun suites me best. I found that I need a gun with some weight, I prefer the simplicity of revolvers, ease of access to parts and ammo is important to me, and I need a lot more practice. So I think, the good Doc, if he hasn’t needs to shoot as many different kinds of guns as he can and see which suites him the best.

WTF, you have to wait TWO DAYS to take possession of a new weapon? Really? What state do you live in?

It takes me all of 10 minutes in MT.
I’m in Wisconsin and I didn’t think that 2 days was that bad. I am blown away with 10 minutes in MT.
Three days in IL and if you have the firearm shipped to an FFL, it’s 3 days from the day they receive it so it could easily wind up being over a week.

I’m looking to sell a watch to a guy for a revolver in trade plus some funds, so I may be the new proud owner of a satin stainless Colt Python with a 6" barrel.

You have expensive taste, Dr. Pangloss. It’s very nice.

I have the F 9mm. It’s new and I haven’t shot it yet but as far as feel goes – it’s very balanced although I found it a little big for my hands.

It was great fun but I did find myself frustrated that I wasn’t awarded the opportunity to really explore and handle the firearms much. They would be handed to me ready to fire and all I had to deal with was the safety. To say that I have much to learn would be an understatement but it is still exhilarating and I’m eager to learn.

My husband says the grip of the gun you chose is very big, if it is the 92F.

One of the main factors in my purchase of the HK P30L V1 40 S&W was the grip which also comes with adjustments for both the length and the width.: You can even have a thicker side on the right and a thiner panel on the left.

It was very funny to hear how they ā€œhandle youā€ the gun…I feel your frustration.
Tell them: You are not going to always be there to handle me the gun in an emergency situation - don’t you want me to be competent to do so in your absence?

My husband got me snap caps for the shotgun. I actually did not want to go to shoot without knowing the gun intimately. I wanted to practice and watch the mechanics of firing with it empty and he taught me it was not good for the gun and got me the snap caps.

I find the snap caps a great way to develop awareness of what your hands are ā€œdoingā€ during the whole process.

Hands on experience is a great confidence builder: It does not allow for you to fool yourself - you will know if you suck.
I particularly pay attention to what my finger does in relation to the trigger after firing, specially not to develop a lazy habit to keep it in the trigger just because its fake bullets.

Why not ask your father-in-law or husband to get you some snap caps?

I have not been able to shoot yet. Been nurturing an injury and am home bound at the moment.
It’s not, unfortunately. :S Still, it’s a very accurate and reliable choice so I’m trusting my husband and I’ll try a different back strap. I’ll try it and be fair.

I have been very honest with my husband (not my father-in-law) about wanting to do EVERYTHING by myself. He understands that is my nature and will eventually let me be with it. It is funny though…in a frustrating way. lol

Agreed with the snap caps and that’s what I’ve done. For the exact reason that you mentioned.

Hopefully your injury is much better in the near future and if you’re ever in Wisconsin let me know. I’d love to take you my local Rod and Gun Club for the afternoon.

You have expensive taste too. lol Let me know when you try it and what you think.

I have a Contender with a .44 mag barrel. Not fun to shoot, bloodies your knuckles every time.

Many questions before answers:

 1. Self-defense in what context? Home, car, or carry?

If home and a novice, I lean toward a shotgun. I used to love the Remington 870, but they are having severe quality control issues. I lean toward pumps over semis, too. If his wife intends to use it, I might consider a 20 guage over a 12.

Apartment vs. home is a big issue, too, or at least affects load.

Rural vs. residential is a big issue. I carry a .308 or a .223 with large capacity mags out on the ranch — but I have bears, cougars, contraband pot growers, and the occasional Mexican drug/human smuggler to deal with.

I also could probably randomly shoot in any direct and not kill anyone, so I take the risk of penetrating rounds.

If car, does he intend to clean the weapon? If not, .357. If so, something .40 or bigger, probably a GLOCK.

Carry? Depends on what he wears. I have mulitple carry guns, ranging from a .45 long colt Schofield recover I strap to my hip (NM being an open carry state), to a 1911 .45, to a .380 I wear with a suit, to a little .38 I put in a pack when mountain climbing.

I wouldn’t conceal carry a GLOCK, however, because the trigger is too easy to press without a holster, IMHO. I like something with a manual safety and double-action for the first shot.

 1. Notice I did not list a pistol for home self defense. This is because you use a pistol to fight your way to your real weapon, a rifle.

Generally speaking, pistols poke little holes in people until they bleed to death. This takes a little while, and, in the mean time, you have to go fight a dying attacker.

A 12 guage shootgun 000 buck, in contrast shoots 18 or so .38 caliber pellets into someone a far greater veolcities than a 2.5 inch snubby ever thought about. Indeed, it’s like emptying a typical .38 revolver 3.5 times into someone — in one shot.

The result is the threat falls to the ground dead and you have a hell of a mess to clean.

Indeed, any rifle, even the lowly Ruger 10/22 (now an ā€œassault rifleā€ according to our president — a suprise to the Cub Scout troop leader who issued us all one for rifelry when I was 8 years old) is probably better than most pistols.

This is my Glock .40. It’s a nice piece with good stopping power. Working on getting a rifle, probably a .306, but I’m not in a financial situation to buy one yet.

Stand your ground on that one, it is important.
I don’t mean to scare you but I thought of you on this one on account of your children ( I don’t have any ):

Maybe share it with the hubby and ask him how you would handle this as a family and whether he wants to school you over the phone should you ever be in a situation like this, specially with young children if they start crying…imagine your motherly instincts and the need to be on the ball with the gun.

:D…I will post my first experience, no doubt.

The Mossberg 500 chainsaw I got for Xmas is HEAVY as hell: I can even do high rep bicep curls with it.
I am planning on removing that handle in future after I get used to it.

Thank you so much for the invitation! That is very hospitable of you - I will take you up on that.

I extend the invitation, should you ever come down to Florida.

I have two prone paddle boards and can go prone paddling on the Gulf: I was scared of sharks at first but the hubby bought me a spear from Cold Steel for marine life self-defense, lol…

My favorite is this one with the matching bayonet. It has some damage to the mum but it’s about 50% intact. I would love to find some rounds for it but I’m not sure that I trust it 100%.

Hornady sells 6.5 x 50mm japanese ammo. It’s actually made by Prvi Partisan, (just in a hornady box) so it’s good quality at a good price. I’ve got a ā€œlast ditchā€ Arisaka I was going to hunt with, but my rifle season got messed up. Haven’t even had a chance to shoot it yet, but the Japanese are about like the germans in terms of their high standards of workmanship, so I believe it was well made even if roughly finished.

No bayonet.

Just got this last month. It’s basically a .308 AK (RPK if you want to be anal). I love the simplicity of it, need to shoot it more. They say that it will shoot even the cheapest russian made steel cased ammo without a hickup and is very accurate for a semi-auto. Unfortunatley even the cheap Russian Made Steel cased is out of stock just about everywhere these days. I’m saving up so that when the next boatload comes in I can stock up.

Super VEPR! Man I want a VEPR so badly, either .308 or 7.62x54R. If they get banned I’m going to be pissed. Oh wait, I’m already pissed.

I joined the NRA today. Who else is a member?

10mm 1911…that thing is as appealing as a BJ  I love 10mms, I love 1911s, why aren’t more manufactueres doing this?! And why do I have to be broke right now?

Because in this world the 45 is King but I love my Glock 20

It’s a beautifully made rifle, especially for $900 bucks. I doubt it would be banned because it lacks most of the ā€œevilā€ features that characterize assualt rifles. Good quality 20-round mags are already expensive and hard to get, plus fully loaded they made the gun over 12 pounds. Would be 14 pounds with optics. The ten round plastic russian made mags are nice and what I mostly use anyway, so as long as they don’t get banned I won’t lose any sleep.

Really? I will have to pick some up and hit the range with this bad boy. It’s got the airplane sight, bipod, and bayonet so it’s a really good example. It needs some cleaning but all the pieces are in great shape. I’ve heard of the last ditch versions of the rifle but was under the impression that those were poorly made. It sounds like I was mis-informed. I’ve fired a bunch of WWII era German bolt actions and I really liked them. I have yet to fire the 6.5 though.

Thanks for the info.

Yessss! I’ve been eyeballing the RIA 10mm but it looks like the gun needs a little fluff-and-buff to run nicely. Already have a Glock G29 (the compact sibling of the G20) and it’s really fun to shoot.

That’s a good pocket gun. I have shot it, but I don’t do well with little guns, my hands are to shaky, and I find the kick back to harsh.
It’s handy to have if you need to conceal a weapon though.
Its not that bad once you put grip extensions on it, to me it doesn’t feel any different than the G19 just a bit easier to carry.
