My rifle has a built in rail, which is the same plastic/composite stuff as the rest of the stock. You can see the black cover under the fore-end on the pic above. I do plan on hunting with this rifle, coyotes and deer, and am leaning towards the Atlas.
Is that a JAE?
No, it’s an the Archangel knockoff of the JAE. I love the look of the standard wood stock, but the length of pull is too short for me. I also wanted an adjustable cheek rest for when I mount a scope. Figured I’d play with the cheeper version first, see how I like it before laying down the serious scratch for the JAE.

I’m very impressed with the quality of the Archangel.
You might want to stick with it. I have a couple aluminum chassis type stocks for bolt guns and they tend to be a bit on the heavy side. It’s nice being able to just torque it down and go, but if you have to haul it around the woods every ounce starts to count.

Very nice gun! I always wanted one of those.

How’s it shoot?

I’ve only had the chance to put about 20 rounds down range, and wasn’t finished zeroing the sites. Really, a friend and I were just taking it for a spin around the block. Next weekend I plan to take it to my uncle’s range and using his bench and bags to zero it in properly, then I could make a claim about accuracy. But the trigger is a dream and the recoil doesn’t bother me. It’s already a little heavier than standard at 11.5 lbs.

This isn’t a Springfield Armory Incorporated M1A by the way. This is a new James River Armory Rockola, with a forged receiver and bolt, their new in house medium weight barrel and the rest USGI parts (mostly HRA from what I can see). Not sure about the “Rockola” name, I’ve read the company President’s explanation as to why they chose to use it, and it makes sense, it’s just a little odd to me.

I have done a little bit of smithing on it, which is I switched out the old mag release for a larger “tactical” one, and it was no problem. I think most repairs would be very easy as one can just see how the parts go together and work. I plan on “National Matching” this one up after I’ve made a solid judgement on how accurate it is out of the box. I might try my hand at building one in the not too distant future as well.

Also, breakdown and cleaning is a dream, almost as easy as an AK.

Definitely know your laws. The only places we are not allowed to carry is government buildings and schools. We can carry, openly if we want, anywhere.
When I carry, I always carry concealed. I don’t need the spook or harassment that comes with open carry even if it’s my right. People freak out needlessly and I don’t care to talk to cops more than I have to so I don’t invite the attention.
When we are pulled over it is a good idea to have your documents ready and hands on the wheel until told otherwise. Usually here the cops are more interested in what your carrying than the fact that you are. My wife got pulled over and all the cop was interested was the gun. He was fascinated that she was carrying a Walther. He turned out to be very enthusiastic about the gun and started talking guns. Let her go without a ticket, because he thought her gun was cool.
In GA, concealed carry owners are considered ‘friends’ of the popo. They aren’t known to give you a hard time at all about it.
Most people think of the northeast as a gun control mecca. Maine, NH and VT actually have some of the least restrictive gun laws you will find anywhere in the country in addition to a deeply-rooted shooting culture. All of the recent sound and fury about allowing concealed carry in Georgia bars was a bit surprising to me, as Maine has allowed that practice for quite some time.

I don’t have a lot of interaction with police, but being a “gun guy” definitely helps here in the north woods. I had a headlight out last year, followed the protocol I outlined above for traffic stops, and was let off with a verbal warning. I was speeding as well, but he didn’t even mention that.

We had the cops swing by a party we were having last year, and the responding officer was more interested in talking about the guns we were shooting earlier that day (which were the source of complaint) than doing any sort of investigative work. There wasn’t anything he could have arrested us for anyways, but it was clear that he saw us as “good guys”.

This makes sense when you realize that a concealed handgun permit is the closest thing to a “good guy card” that the government issues to the general public.

edit: I also second the notion of carrying concealed over open. Open carry is legal here in Maine and you will see people doing it from time-to-time, but I do not wish to draw that kind of attention to myself. I think it has its place in rural settings where it is unlikely to cause alarm and in very hot climates where carrying concealed may add a special element of discomfort.
I am glad you brought that up because when we think of the NE we think of MA and NY most of the time. But Maine, NH and VT are vastly different places than the rest of that corridor. A friend of mine who lived there for a bit said in many ways it was more red neck than GA ever was. I mean that as a compliment, actually.
The brouhaha over the bar carry change was a bunch of BS by the grabbers who didn’t know the law in the first place. We were actually allowed to carry in bars as long as it served food. And we were allowed to carry in bars where the bar owner was friendly to carry. It was a confusing law, so they clarified it and just made it ok to carry in bars with out the confusion. Also church carry was made legal as well. I know that sounds ironic and for the record I don’t carry in church, but I can if I want to. I never cared one way or the other on that. I go to church to pray, I leave politics at the door.

Nice dude I’m interested to see how that works for you. I’m looking for one now thinking about that, a weaver or a Burris fullfield. Leaning toward the Burris.
This makes me want to get a rifle bad. I just need a good place where I can put one through it’s paces properly. I couldn’t justify a rifle right now, simply because I just don’t have a place where I can throw rounds 200 - 300 yards down range. It seems like a waste to go to an indoor range and shoot 25 yrds with something so much more capable.
I guess it’s good, because I don’t have the $$ for one right now yet.

Thank you! I call her Duchess.

The Harris bipod is working out great so far. I put 200 rounds through her of various ammo and she ate it all with ease. Still testing the waters with her. Got a fairly consistent pattern at 400 yards so far. Need more time and some more adjusting to take it out further.

I am also going to pick up a magpul monopod for the rail on the stock to make balancing easier when prone.

That pic; your state lets you pick golfers off on the links? Sweet!

400 yds? I wish I had that kind of range. Where I live it trees or topo that limits my sight. My accuracy is limited by bad shooting.

Lol golfers? I am confused. Damn pic uploaded sideways though.

I hope to get a fairly respectable moa at 800 yards. I have a close friend who was a seal sharpshooter coming back in town in a few weeks. Should be able to hit that with some coaching from him. In return he gets free beer and meals on me :P.

Having large areas to shoot across is no issue, but my shooting can be haha. 300 yards+ little errors are not forgiving.

It just looked like a fairway, that’s all. lol

Nice you have a shooting coach with that knowledge, and works for beer and backstraps.

Oh haha. It’s an old field that used to be farmed that has grown over and I just bush hog it as needed.

Very nice, he lived with me for awhile after he retired from the forces until.he got his feet under him in civie life. He’s the best kind of friend you can ask for and a hell of a shot. If I can ever shoot half as well I’ll be happy lol.

I knew I wasn’t the only one who named my guns  Funny, they take on the personality of the name, or vice versa. Maybe it’s psychological, or maybe…they speak to us!

Guys & Gals…

I need a rifle.

This is what I’m thinking:
Bolt action - for some reason, my gut tells me this is what I want
Simple - less moving parts the better, and I’d like to be able to take it apart and put back together without an engineering degree

Everything else I’m pretty open too. I want to get into a coupel things, long range rifle is one of them (cowboy skills another, but that is a different post).

Can you plz help, lol.

What’s your budget bean counter?

Cowboy skills? 30-30 lever action no scope. I’ve killed plenty of varmints with one.

Bolt action. Since you’re new I’d say standard caliber rifle. .308, 30-06, 7mm-08, 25-06, .243. Remington Model 700 is always a good bet. Is this just for long range shooting? Do you hunt?
Captnoblivious wrote:

This will vary. If the wife is with me, not too much. If she isn’t, as much as I need. lol.

lol yeah. I’m talking single action 45’s, the holsters, quick draw… the whole nine. I’m an old man that likes history. I don’t like polymer semi’s and modern tactical shit… yet
Is this just for long range shooting? Do you hunt?
No hunting. The club has a 200m and 600m range. I want something that can qualify on both, once I can actually do it, lol.

I’m looking into long range target shooting really. Just sounds like a good time. I want to do the appleseed thing, and will get a 22LR for it, but would rather a nice bolt action that will serve me going forward that I can learn the basics of on my own really.

I can’t stress enough how simple this needs to be to operate and clean lol. I’m not that bright or good with my hands.

Am I seeing this right that these are like $700?

edit, spoke too soon. Found one, with scope for 450

Ruger 10/22 should be your first rifle. Fun, perfect to learn skills on, cheap.

I got one when I was 8-9 I think.

Your first larger rifle, get a .308. It is a solid hunting round and also found in military applications.

For reference, during most of my military career, I carried a M14EBR in 7.62X51 (shot AA11) which is similar (a 7.62 can fire a .308, but not necessarily the reverse, but most can).

I knew someone was going to tell me flat out to start with a 22… And I know deep down you’re right, lol.

ugh.

If I can get a .308 on the cheap (think there is one down the street for $200) I might just do it, but I’ll likely get a 22 if I do the appleseed thing.

Being a grown man there’s no need to start with a .22, but it’s not a bad idea either.
