Gumbel: Olympics Are Too White

Prof X is like Dave Chappelle when he is being interviewed for jury duty.

R Kelly Not Guilty
Michael Jackson Not Guilty
OJ Simpson Not Guilty

Robert Blake Oh yeah, Barreta did that shit.

He would be right. Blacks are also more “apt” to get pulled over, to be found guilty and some might even argue are more “apt” to get harsher sentencing for crimes. How about you answer the many questions you have been asked?

That’s not the point…and if you don’t know that…

The point is a white newscaster cannot SAY IT.

(Knocking on POX’s head…hello anyone home?)

A white newscaster could say that blacks are more likely to be arrested for crimes. He could NOT say that blacks are arrested because they are more criminal than whites. One statement is true, the other is a racially degrading statement. You are the one who brought up this statement so why back down now? Why not answer any questions asked of you? Because blacks are more likely to be arrested doesn’t mean whites commit less crimes. It simply means whites may be less likely to get caught or less likely to receive harsher penalties for the same crimes.

Ya, we ancient Greeks loved Ping Pong! Ditch the girly sports and bring back Pankration! That was the most popular sport in the ancient games.

In 648 B.C Pankration is officially entered in the 33rd Olympic Games as one of the “heavy” events. The rules prohibit biting and gouging one’s opponent. The Spartans and many of the other Doric city states, especially in Crete, bar their athletes from competing in this event as it is too restrictive compared to their own version of the sport. These same city states continue to hold no-rules Pankration events as well as group competitions in their own local festivals.

POX,

Um…needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway) you have a blind spot…

God love ya…

As much as it pains me to do so, I’m going to partially agree with Prof.X on this on. If we want to get rid of political correct bullshit, it can’t be done if we act like little liberal weenies everytime someone says something we don’t like.

I do think double standards are wrong, no matter what justification people try to use to make them alright. However, instead of trying to censure Gumbel we should focus on defending everyone’s right to say stupid shit.
Now that I would agree with. But how come that standard never applies when it is reversed?

We either play by the same rules or we don’t.

LOL. How come it is never applied?! You didn’t “apply it” in this thread yourself. You can’t be against political correctness and then whine when someone says something you don’t like. It clearly shows you are only for getting rid of PC rules as long as they are saying what you want to hear.

And you have an inability to answer even one question posed to you. I answered every one you threw at me. Why can’t you do the same?

Prof.,

I agree with you that Jimmy “the Greek”'s comments were more racist than Gumbel’s. IMO, the contrast is more clear when you look at Gumbel’s comments about the winter olympics vs. Rush Limbaugh’s comments to McNabb (Who took no offense to the comments). Do you think the shitstorm that rained down on Limbaugh was appropriate?

We all play by the same rules or we don’t play?

That one bothers you?

Oh yea…you don’t want everyone to be held to the same standard I forgot.

Answer Jeff’s question which you keep dodging:

"Does black on white racism exist? yes or no?

That should be an easy one for you.

Just type YES Or NO

Of course he does Rush is a white republican.

There POX, I saved you the trouble of answering…

You will have to post his comments. I didn’t follow that story at all and don’t know any deeper details.

What the hell? You haven’t answered ONE question I have asked of you and you are here asking me more? You first. I have asked you questions several times in this thread and you have avoided each and every one of them. Get back to me when you can be a man yourself on the issue.

Limbaugh’s comment that caused his “forced resignation” from ESPN’s sports analyst position:

I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.

Allen Barra wrote a piece on the issue that crystallizes my opinion of the Limbaugh issue if you’re interested:

and, if it matters, a lot of the stats and subsequent events proved Limbaugh to be right on the fact that McNabb was hyped that season and maybe overall (I think Terell Owens would agree if it wouldn’t be construed as a ‘black on black’ crime).

McNabb isn’t the first black quarterback. Why didn’t we hear anything similar about Warren Moon? I think Limbaugh is talking out of his ass but I don’t see how this one comment lead to his “forced resignation” other than that he is a jackass who many probably just don’t like. That alone is reason enough to get rid of someone.

Limbaugh was not on ESPN when Moon was playing.

This one comment did cause his forced resignation. It had nothing to do with his being a jackass. It was all about this one comment.
Zap Branigan wrote:

What does that have to do with anything? The point is, there was no massive media attempt to overhype him as a player just because he was black. McNabb is a likeable “tv personality” which may be the soul reason he was focused on. He smiled for the camera. He looked like a nice guy. He interviewed well. Why avoid those as reasons? Did the guy ever NOT smile? I mean, shit, if you do an internet search, could you even find one picture of him NOT smiling?

Then I disagree with losing his job for this one reason, however, I still consider the man a jackass. If I was his boss, he would have been fired long before this one comment. Perhaps this was just the opportunity they were waiting on.

There wasn’t nearly the hype around Moon as their was/is with McNabb, even though Moon was 10 times the quarterback McNabb will ever be. That was the point. McNabb was being hyped WAY beyond his talent.
