Gumbel should be blown out
February 16, 2006
It’s just starting to be made public, and I admit I did not see HBO’s Real Sports host Bryant Gumbel make some blatantly racist comments on the cable television network last week, but then again; apparently HBO didn’t see or hear them either.
I didn’t see it, but I sure did read the unofficial transcripts of what Gumbel said on the show that he hosts, a show that normally has some very interesting features.
I won’t ever give it my time again, and neither should you. Take it one step further, I’m calling for an all out boycott of at the very minimum, all HBO Sports programming.
In case you missed it, which apparently a lot of people did, Gumbel delivered a commentary on the Winter Olympics. “Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention,” said Gumbel.
He went on to basically dismiss the Olympics, which are televised by his former employer at NBC, and talked about how he’s looking forward to March Madness. I wonder if Gumbel would have said what he said about the Olympics if he was still working for the peacock network.
However, if you have any brains, that’s not even the most damning thing Gumbel said. The comment about the Olympics not having the world’s greatest athletes because of the lack of black athletes is a flat-out joke. Sure, a good deal of the worlds greatest athletes are not in Torino, but a lot of them are.
Oh, that’s right. NHL players, world class figure skaters, Shaun White and Ted Ligety must not be any good because they’re not black. I guess that’s what Gumbel means.
You can twist Gumbel’s words however you want too, and I’m sure a lot of you will. You will hammer me and call me all sorts of names because I took major offense to Gumbel’s commentary.
What you can’t do is ignore the absolute damning criticism by Gumbel that would never be accepted if Gumbel were white and said he would not watch the NBA because of the lack of non-black players. Imagine if I went on Sporting News Radio and said the NBA is impossible to watch because there are too many blacks, or if I said the reason why I have an incredible passion for hockey is because the player pool is overwhelmingly white. You would want my head on a platter, with knife in hand.
Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder was rightfully fired by CBS, Al Campanis was justifiably fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers for his comments on ABC many years back, and Rush Limbaugh was blown out of his ESPN gig for stupid remarks about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
If we’re being fair here, shouldn’t Gumbel be fired for his blatant racist and ignorant comments on HBO last week?
I know every comment is different, and needs to be judged independently. I had no problem with Snyder, Campanis or Limbaugh getting shown the door, but so should Gumbel. A person of his intelligence, experience and polish absolutely cannot compare the Winter Olympics to a GOP convention, which is to say that the Olympics are not good because of the lack of blacks, and also that a huge section of our government is largely exclusionary.
Here’s another issue: HBO does not air that show live. How in the world did a comment like that escape HBO’s production team or upper level management? Does that mean that HBO, which has issued no response to this issue as of Thursday, agrees with Gumbel? They must, because the silence is deafening. Or maybe, it’s part of a bigger problem.
That if you are black, you can say more damaging and hurtful comments, but if you are not, don’t even go down that road.
I feel the same way about Charles Barkley, a player who has made some racist comments throughout the years. Everybody just laughs and shrugs it off as “Charles being Charles.” It’s not funny, and should not be tolerated or accepted.
I guess I shouldn’t watch the rest of the Olympics, because the athletes just aren’t the best in the world. Sorry NBC, perhaps you should just broadcast the summer games so that Mr. Gumbel will be entertained a little more.
doogie’s disclaimer:
I love Barkley. He cracks me up.

RUSH: (Laughing.) I’ll tell you what, there are a lot of communists there, though, Bryant. It’s got to be a tough choice for you here. You may not be able to watch the blacks that you like skiing in the downhill and on the luge and the two- and four-man bobsled, but there are plenty of commies over there.
In fact, one of our guys ought to be signaled out. What is this guy’s name, Weir? Put on an old throw-back Soviet Union jacket with the CCCP logo on it? Yeah, he’s dating some Svetlana, you know, some Russian babe, and she gave him that for his birthday or something. He’s running around over there wearing those old Soviet Union jerseys, or warmup jackets, and it’s caused some people to notice.

The Cold War is over Rush. Let it go.
gumbel has always been a self-absorbed jackass.
I don’t see a post from pox on this issue.
pox, do you condemn gumbel’s remarks?
I’m waiting.

I have it on strictly confidential authority that Gumbel is NOT black. In his early teens, he read ‘Black Like Me!’ in school and decided that was his ticket into broadcast journalism. Through heavy use of skin dye, he managed to use the Left-leaning proclivities of those in the MSM to obtain his position. Should there ever be an outright ban on this dye, he will be exposed as a Caucasian from Massapequa, NY.

Gee Gumbel, the GOP can boast Charles Barkley,Colin Powell,Condi,JC Watts, as it’s members, and the Bush administration has put more minorities in head positions than Clinton’s,so not only are you racist, but a stupid dumbass also.Facts seem to escape idealogues if it doesn’t promote their own world view.
So, where’s the media outcry?
Several years back Jimmy “the Greek” had some racist comments and he was terminated by the network. In fact, he never worked at that level on television again.
But, not so with Gumbel, it seems his life goes on just as it always has.
Hopefully everyone will see from this that there is a very strong media bias to the left. And there always has been!

I am just now reading this and I truly don’t give a shit. Bryant Gumbel was never black to begin with.

LOL at “media outcry”. The guy basically said the Winter Games are boring and that he was laughing at these athletes being called the world’s best despite having a lack of blacks in the group.
What is there to “outcry” about? He was perpetuating the stereotype that blacks are good at sports? He degraded the winter olympics? I honestly don’t care about either statement. Had he said that blacks were ONLY good at sports or even if he had said that whites are poor at sports there would actually be an issue.
From what I heard of “Jimmy the greek”, his comments were absolutely degrading to certain races. Gumbel didn’t even degrade any race but instead degraded the games themselves. Who cares? I hate the Winter Olympics.

LOL…oh please POX.
-
Degraded the US Olympic team.
-
Accused the republican party of racism.
-
Used racist comments regarding black/white athletes.
Now I ask you: WERE IS THE MEDIA OUTCRY?
You won’t see one because he is a liberal.

LOL @ ZEB. I didn’t even know he was liberal until you just wrote this. I would never have guessed as such. I think you and anyone else reading more into it has some issues. He degraded the winter Olympics. Who gives a shit? I have done the same around friends since they started. Accused the Republican party of racism? But didn’t you just write that there is no outcry because he is “leftist” or because of the “leftist media”? You are basically saying the same thing! Please tell me you can see this. Racist comments imply that one race was degraded. That is not what he did. Unless you are about to make the claim that everyone at the Olympics who is not black is “white” (as if there are no Asians, Latinos or other nationalities), then you can’t even make that assumption that mentioning blacks means he is degrading whites. It is a HUGE leap and is NOT what was stated.
Where’s the media outcry? Get over it. You obviously don’t understand true racism if this is what you get offended at.
Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder was ejected from the public eye in 1988 when, on Martin Luther King’s birthday, he said that blacks are better at sports because of slave plantation breeding techniques. “During the slave period, the slave owner would breed his big black with his big woman so that he would have a big black kid?that’s where it all started.”
Pox,
Right, and if the person was a white sportscaster would you also say he was not racist?
What if it read like this:
“The Olympics are a joke, You expect us to believe that these are the best athletes? There arn’t even any white people in them.”
I wonder how many times Jesse Jackson would be marching around that building?
He would declare an 11 million man march and storm the network.
Rev Sharpton would be so mad he would be stabbing white people at random.
Ha ha…get real POX!

I am ‘real’ and if you really want to expand this, would it be a stretch to say that blacks make up the majority of athletes in most professional sports teams in America? With that in mind, how off is a statement like that made by Bryant Gumbel? Insensitive? Yes…But aren’t you and many others constantly complaining about how “politically correct” everything is? Why not stay consistent and cheer it on when someone speaks what is on their mind? I am confused by how you take offense when you claim at other times that this is what you want. Strange.

Hey, he already has many butt kissing threads so this is just to balance it out!
I think the real truth here is that, for the most part, race has nothing to do with sports. What you see in certain sports is more social/economic than anything. Skiing and most winter sports historically were for the rich white people. So you are not going to have a lot of blacks in a sport that was previously not accessible to them for many reasons. But, just like golf with Tiger Woods, I expect you will see many more blacks in all kinds of sports including winter sports.
So once these social/economic barriers are wide open you will see people of many races in the top levels of sports.

there is no shortage of white people who train for running sports, yet who tends to dominate them? Africans(Kenyans for distance) and African Americans(Canadian, american, jamaican, etc) for sprinting.
Race does make a difference. Why are people so scared in admitting this? And who cares if it does make a difference. It is not like it knocks the feat at all…does anyone look down at einstein because he was born with a higher mental capacity than others…
Bryant Gumbel is being a jerk and acts way too white to complain about anything. Now go get me a drink.
pox,
I guess your response could be translated thus: “I don’t like the Winter Olympics. Therefore, anything said about it is fair game.”
Let’s get to the root of the issue:
Pox, can there be Black on White racism?
Make sure there is a clear yes or no in your answer.
