GuineaPig’s Training Log - Hunt 300 Deadlift

I must have a bigger belly than you guys cause I deff get better brace with a belt.

So like a 100 kilo conventional equals a 200 sumo? Sounds about right.

(definitely not right)

I have a bit of back injury history meself but for now I’m progressing safe enough beltless soo that’s what we doin

I think you definitely get a better brace, but I think it is offset by having even more belly area getting in the way of the lift.

Notice how I did not take the bait about your bigger belly, I feel proud of myself.

I suspect belt would work better for me on conventional deads though to be fair sample of like 2 sets I’ve done belted conventional. Me rep PR at 170kg conventional x 12 was done belted. Like @Cyrrex said kinda feels like it gets in the way on sumo

There are some very big guys with very big bellies getting some good deadlift numbers. Think you just need a slightly wider stance. Big belly never stopped Eddie Hall

Well me conventional PR is now 200kg x 3 so one of those numbers is kinda right

I have never tried sumo. Aaron at iron revolution told me to never do them at the powerlifting workshop I went to. Something about the elaborate set up being only for sexy guys !

Sounds about right lol

Sure, of course. Not arguing that it isn’t a good idea or that it doesn’t work. It is more of a comfort thing for me. I feel the belt getting in the way, and I dislike it a little.

That said, the conventional wisdom I have always seen and heard is that big bellies are a net positive for the squat, and a net negative for the deadlift. I tend to agree based on my own experience, but yeah, there is also plenty of contrary evidence out there, like Eddie.

When I get my belly big enough I will let you know the results :joy:

You could try a looser, higher belt. Took me some time and I still don’t get that much out of it but it is a good bit better.

@simo74 theoretically the bigger the belly, the more difficult the belt is gonna be.

I get that Kjell, it was more a dig at the big belly boys and their beltless performance.

Big belly master race, bro!

@Cyrrex didn’t work for me but worked for a friend of mine. U can buy belts that are thinner both dimensions thickness and width might get in the way less while still supporting u

This might work for you @Cyrrex
