Easy push day today with some bench and overhead press at McQuinns Gym Bendigo. Meh benching today but solid overhead pressing with 60kg for a few (not too far off my best). Maybe I’m a better presser than bench presser. Great fun overall and solid pump.

I can’t say I’ve made leaps in strength much ever but I’ve always been getting a little thiccer.

Bench 3x5 @ 100kg
Overhead Press 3 Sets @ 60kg
Flyes 3 Sets
Upright Rows 3 Sets @ 22.5kg
Y Raises 3 Sets @ 7kg
Side Raises 3 Sets @ 8kg
Face Pull 3 Sets

G’day all.

Been sick for a couple of days now but it’s clearing up. Chilled on lifting and eating properly for a bit. Probably needed the deload anyways.

Going forward will run the Deathbench program which is twice a week benching with a lot of accessory volume. If this doesn’t push me forward maybe volume isn’t an approach for me at this time.

@whang aka BigWhanger I’m looking to book in a doctors appointment for my back end of next week-ish hopefully get some subsidised physiotherapy. That’s if I require it though because as @chris_ottawa suggested I’ve got my hands on Stuart McGills books and am reading through that writing up notes/summary/takeaway points as I go.

The rest of my week outside of those two bench sessions will be a back/shoulder health/ muscle maintenance session and maybe a little bit of lower body if my back holds up and the majority of the time spent on back rehab.

The doctor you’re gonna go to will be an ortho or sports medicine specialist?

Neither. In Australia GPs are the gatekeepers to everything from physicians to other healthcare professionals like physio

I see. Hope you get a referral to a good ortho/sports med/Or physio then. Would kinda suck if all they do will give you pain meds

Tbh I dunno how well even an ortho or sports med specialist can help for back pain. Short of a back pain specialist I’m not too confident maybe it’s just that McGill throws a lot of shade in his books.

I understand where your coming from. Admittedly I’m just lucky that my friend who is an ortho surgeon has been playing volleyball 20+ years so he understands that you just can’t tell people like us to stop playing/lifting and that pain killers aren’t the answer. Lol. Usually those who get into sports med or ortho have been playing some sport too but the addiction and dedication varies.

Saw a rehab med once and after assessing me, the classic text book question was can’t you stop playing volleyball? (remove aggravating factors) I said I’d go crazy if I did. Luckily she knew what was wrong and what needed to be done in rehab

Yeah, I’m wondering what else they could do that would actually help. Maybe they will lead you through the McGill big 3. McGill does have some rather harsh opinions of how most doctors deal with back issues, but at the same time he has a proven track record of fixing people’s backs and there are plenty of people who go to doctors and never get better.

At my work, almost everyone in the kitchen has some kind of back issue (I was just the latest addition). One guy told me that he had a bad back when I started working there 10 years ago and it hasn’t gotten any better, he goes to some physio/sports massage place regularly. One thing that McGill says is that you shouldn’t have to be coming back for repeated treatments and adjustments, and that is exactly what these people are doing.

Brian Carroll was able to fix his back and continue lifting, if he can then anyone can. His lumbar and sacrum were totally fucked, bulges, fractures, bone edema, you would think he would have been handicapped for life.

There’s a difference between good doctors and good businessmen lol.

Don’t know who Brian Caroll is but wow. I think I’ve seen his name pop up on a few elitefts videos I think

I’m not too surprised honestly. Back conditions are complex, take can take a while to fix up, require a lot of patient and practitioner work on it and at the end of the day there’s a lot of uncertainty and no guarantee of a fix in a timely manner. Insurance companies only dole out so much cash and time to fix issues so it’s not surprising to see a lot of back pain mismanaged.

Gonna start up a variation of the DeathBench program. Volume looks a little scary but we’ll see how it goes. If I’m dying than maybe was bad idea. Lot of Triceps work which I’ve done little of since I started lifting and floor press which I’ve never done before.

Starting DeathBench today. Stupid freedom units make me have to pull out my calculator app all the time. It’s a solid start to the program and will keep track of how I feel and am recovering.

Floor press feels like a half press to me lol probably could load it up more than with regular bench given some time to familiarise with the movement. the tricep pump overall was massive after JM Press and Tricep Extensions. Tbh not sure if tricep pump or pressure on elbows. Have never had elbow issues in the past.

Pretty chill start to things plenty of time to build on it.

Bench @ 90-95kg
Floor Press @ 70-80kg
JM Press @ 35kg
Tricep Extensions @ 10kg
Pec Flyes @ 100
