GSP vs Shields Time To Choose!

And you’re an idiot.

GSP knocks Shields down with a punch and later on knocks him down with a kick. He stuffs three of his takedowns and three other times when Shields grabbed his leg he masterfully got out of it. Furthermore, he took shields to the ground twice. And he did much of this with only one eye.

I have absolutely no patience for people who don’t understand this game, but think they do. And even worse don’t understand a champion who fights according to a well crafted strategy. Instead of saying bad things about GSP today people should be inspired by his performance under those conditions.

Think about it, GSP beat the best opponenent in the world at his weight class, a guy hadn’t lost in 7 years and who beat Dan Henderson. And he did it with one eye for three rounds.

Yeah, we should all try to become pussy’s just like GSP.[/quote]

Exactly.

Yes he’s been having some trouble finishing opponents and could go for the kill a bit more but you can’t really argue with 33 or so straight rounds won. Granted I thought he won every round last night with possibly a draw in the last round.

I do think most people don’t realize just how high level the people he’s fighting. Not to mention how badly an injured eye would effect GSP specifically. Now Randy’s style of fighting would have faired better with such an injury. Let’s not forget that GSP has finished many opponents in the past.

As for GSP fighting Anderson I’m not interested, I think it’s a bad match up for GSP and I want to see Anderson vs Bones.

As for the best fights of the nights it was clearly Aldo/Hominick and Rory/Diaz. I was there and the stadium was deafening when Rory put a slam fest on Diaz and for Hominick’s rally in the fifth.

Granted the jumping “crane” kick was majestic. Knocked some dental work off of Randy’s grill.

Hendo must be happy with Machida, he isn’t the only one without teeths right now.

GSP didn’t knock down Jake Shields once, he just hit Shields when he was off balance and he promptly got up, the kick only shock Shields and he didn’t fell from it.

Also GSP went the distance with a guy with almost 0 standup skill and landed less strikes and got bloodied up.

A lot of people here are giving GSP too much credit for last nights fight. I am not a GSP fan or a Shields fan, i used to be a GSP fan but ever since he fought serra for the second time he has been a different fighter.

The bottom line is, while GSP definitely won, he went 5 rounds on the feet with a guy who looks like fucking Frankenstein standing up. Shields looked embarrassingly bad at times and GSP was generally ineffective at doing anything other than controlling range and being the busier of the two. His “Knockdown” had more to do with catching him off balance rather than hurting him. The only moment in that fight Where Shields was even remotely in trouble was the headkick, but he still had his wits about him.

Its sad for me to think that if Shields had opened up more earlier in the fight like he did in the 4th and 5th, he actually could have stolen that fight. GSP is too conservative and cerebral with his approach to fighting nowadays. I firmly believe that the first Serra fight changed him as a fighter.

Im also beginning more and more to believe that, while his standup is good, it has been vastly overrated. It looks good when he uses it to setup takedowns but when you fight an entire fight on the feet with Jake Shields and you look more busted up after the fight than he does, You are not an elite level striker.

This fight just continues to reaffirm what ive always thought about a GSP/Silva fight: He would not make it past three rounds. I admit i am bias towards Silva but who can watch last nights fight and think that there isnt some ridiculously rangy and out-of-nowhere kick waiting for GSP’s face if he tries to go 5 rounds with Silva, becaue he will NOT finish him.

And you understand MMA more than anyone here? Just kidding Zeb, I still owe you for bringing up my pull-ups years ago.
GSP is probably the best welterweight ever. I felt the best strategy for GSP to win would be to keep Shields on his feet and out strike him. Shields SUCKS on his feet, and I don’t think he’ll ever get better. So why pay for something I knew would most likely happen?
By the way, I don’t want to see Silva vs GSP. It’ll end badly for GSP.

He was never fully out, he tapped because of strikes right after the ref pulled Serra off.

He never got knocked out cold, just rocked, but it was a TKO. I think GSP probably felt humiliated after the fight, and that is what he doesnt want to go through again. He said it himself in the past that he stuggled with the mental part of the game at times, and even though he claims to be mentally stronger than ever after seeing a sports therapist, i still think there is a bit of a mental weakness there. I believe this weakness manifests itself in the form of him not being willing to put it on the line to finish a fight or really make a statement due to his fear of getting “serra’d” again.

It’s a shame the snoozefest that was the main event almost blew a wonderful night.

Yeah it is. i was all pumped to go out to a couple clubs afterwards with some of my gym buddies, but we were all yawning by the end.

Whatever adrenaline we had all built up during the hominick fight was completely diminished before the 4th round of the GSP fight.

Nothing against him, he’s an incredible athlete, but he needs to lose so the WW division can become exciting again. Him and his camp said that they heard the critics, and they really want to finish, but he showed in this fight that he has absolutely no attention of letting it all hang out there.

I personally want to see a Jon Fitch rematch. Fitch knows what mistakes he made in the first fight, admitted that after the first time he got rocked he basically through his gameplan out the window, and has improved dramatically. He has the striking to hang with GSP and if he uses his smothering top game the way he did against Thiago, a rematch could go very differently. Fitch will force GSP to fight.

On another note, is there a single person that was rooting for Aldo but didnt want hominick to win by the 5th round?

I am not an Aldo fan, i appreciate his skills but think its only a matter of time before someone “figures him out.” I was pulling for Hominick, thought he had the potential to win, but expected Aldo to KO him. I always liked Hominick, but after this fight he has become one of my favorite fighters. That was IMO the best fight of the year so far and if he had pulled off the 5th round TKO, it would have gone down as one of the greatest fights of all time.

I would love to see a rematch, and i think Hominick would be my bet this time. He has taken Aldo’s best shots, he has gone all 5 rounds taking a horrendous beating and never stopped coming forward and trying to finish. He knows he made mistakes (this fight would have looked a lot more competitive through the first 4 rounds if he had put together more combinations like he said in the post fight interview) and he knows what he did very well in the 5th. it looked to me like Aldo’s will was broken in that fifth round, and i think Hominick can use what he learned from this fight to try and break his will much sooner in a rematch.

when he was GnPng Aldo, i thought he would have the stoppage…Jose had nuthin’ in the 5th.

i thought Hominick was a good fighter before, but he got better each round…good stuff. nice to see him get a massive bonus, too…

Yeah i was pleased to see he got the 129k FotN bonus, especially because even though he always puts on amazing fights, he’s probably only collecting around 50-60 for losing that fight.

A rematch would be close, based on how Fitch performed in the latter half of the last fight and the fact that he is one of those fighters who will learn from his mistakes, i would put my money on him over Penn though. If we are as close to seeing 5 round non-title fights as White says, i would love to see that fight in a 5 rounder. I think under those circumstances Fitch has no problem taking at least 3 rounds.

hmmm…not to stir up controversy, but here’s a slo-mo video of Shields catching GSP in the eye: http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/news/323054/Video-replay-shows-Shields-eye-poke-vs-GSP-no-permament-damage-expected/

either it was intentional, or he’s wildly incompetant at stand-up…

He IS wildly incompetent at standup, thats the part that gets me.

Why has nobody brought up the fact that GSP’s eye was injured very early in the fight by a finger from shields?

That right there is hugely detrimental to performance and explains why Shields was able to land any punches at all really.

I look at a guy like Hominick and what he went through in his fight, and the caliber of striker he was up against. And then i look at GSP and what he dealt with in his fight, and the caliber of striker he was up against.

The eye injury doesnt excuse another snoozefest, especially when its a kickboxing match starring jake shields.

x2 I completely missed that.

The video is up and about on youtube (original taken down though).

Looked like blatant cheating to me honestly. Jake basically threw out a fistful of fingers, lol.

I guess you got to give it to Georges. Not many people would have done as well after that.

edit: I’m still disappointed in his performance. I’d say I wasn’t impressed, but that wouldn’t be true.

Yes, a pussy who steps in a cage several times a year with brazilian killers, world class grapplers, and some of the best fighters in the world, and puts his health at risk.

They may be tentative, overly-cautious, unskilled, or foolish, but no Mixed Martial Artist is a pussy. Respect the will to step into a cage.
