GSP vs Shields Time To Choose!

I’ve got faith in GSP. He will not disappoint.

Who’s watching the Prelims at the moment?

While he didn’t lose he did disappoint me, booooooorrrrrrriiiiiiiiiinggggggggggg.

Another GSP decision. Never saw that coming.

/sarcasm

I didn’t see the fights and just wanted to know if it was worth it? I didn’t want to see GSP go 5 rounds again or Couture get KOd. Which both happened.
After this fight, does he stand a chance against Silva if they were to meet? After watching GSP’s last 5 or so fights, I would say NO.

Bocek vs Henderson - Good for some people I guess, wasn’t my cup of tea
Matyushenko vs Brilz - Good but short lived.
Machida vs Couture - good
Aldo vs Hominick - Fantastic
GSP vs Shields - Crap. Unlike some here, I don’t mind seeing GSP work a decision, as long as it’s a dominating decision, ala Koscheck 2. This was just tedious. Apparently GSP had an eye injury early in the fight, so chalk it up to shit happens I guess. He better pull off something surreal for his retirement fight.

I was wrong. I should have called Machida by brutal Crane kick KO. Silly me.

GSP by UD. Afterward, the UFC will have no one else to hype up as a threat to GSP. Every guy he has fought recently has a glaring weakness that he was able to exploit. Shields will just be the next in line.

Machida by tko. It will look like the Vera fight but Machida has a killer instinct when he has a guy hurt and he will swarm on Randy when he drops him. I admire Couture for still fighting at a world class level at his age, but this is a bad matchup for him.[/quote]

When GSP fights, you only need to watch the first round, then replay it 4 more times in your head. You will now know exactly how the whole fight went without watching more than 5 minutes of it.

I was so hyped up after the aldo/hominick fight. I was struggling to stay awake after the GSP/Shields fight.

Main event sucked. I gave up watching in round 4 to go the gym. I’ve never done that. Apparently Jake won the last two on a couple of judge’s score cards… cool.

For three rounds I saw GSP land over hand rights and dominate Jake on the feet. Jake fought a horrible fight. He did nothing with two single legs and never pulled guard. The last straw for me was seeing GSP hurt Jake, throw a few punches while he was on his back, then let him up. Was it the right thing to do? Yeah, Jake could’ve subbed him… I guess. What that told me was that Georges just wasn’t willing to throw caution to the wind and go for a finish anymore. He has too much to lose now. Too many endorsements, too many ‘fans’.

His style has changed a lot the last three or four fights. I don’t think we’ll ever see him the way he used to be in the cage, aggressive, beastly. I still enjoyed the Kos fight, but that’s not what MMA is to me, and definitely not why I watch it. A display of dominance is great until you realize someone won’t (not can’t) pull the trigger. Then there’s a little disappointment attached to it.

Either way, this fight was boring.

i watched the PPV last night, and am watchin the prelims now…

Henderson v. Bocek was a great fight. i’m amazed Henderson can make 155…i wonder if he’ll jump up in weight anytime soon or not.

Garza looked off at first, until he got the clinch…the flying triangle was friggin’ awesome.

Manjivar looked solid. prolly should look at 185, ho…

Steven seagal is throwing off my MMA picks…i really thouhgt Machida was the worst match-up for Couture, due to his weird movement, but who the hell saw that kick coming? i re-watched it about 15 times, and it was on target, about as well as it could be.

Aldo looked great, but i didn’t understand the takedowns. Hominick did about as good as anyone ccould do…his BJJ looked great, and his stand up was solid. Aldo is just too freakin’ powerful…

i don’t know what the hell is up with GSP. i really liked his last few fights, even though he didn’t finish. last night he looked off from the start. he did tap Shields’ jabs away like they weren’t even there, but he didn’t utilize his lead leg leg kick or superman punch enough, and kept winging that stupid overhand right too much. Shields didn’t do really anything, but he didn’t lose as bad as Kos, Hardy, Penn or Alves. other than his jab, Shields’ standup is terrible, as if he’s never trained before. at the beginning of the fight, it looked like GSP was injured or sick. he mentioned the eye injury, but he looked tentative well before that…

Ellenberger had a good KO.

Diaz looked boring…of course he had to do that stupid posturing tonight where he acted like Macdonald wasn’t fighting. macdonald schooled him…his strength, explosiveness and conditioning was so far beyond Diaz’s. those suplexes were badass, but it really showed how physically unprepared Diaz is for the big guys at 170. Diaz needs to work on his S&C, and maybe even go somewhere else for a camp to tweak his striking and strategy.

“the Athlete” had a good sub…gotta be nice to be back with a finish in his homeland. he’s always an entertaining fighter…

all in all, i thought tis was the best card i’ve seen in a while. the main event was disappointing, but the rest of the fighters made up for it. it’s gonna be interesting to see how this shakes up the rankings in the UFC…

yeah, this bugged me. somebody needed to remind GSP that he’s GS fucking P and that he’s the champ. his confidence is off or soemthing…

gsp is a pussy

No can defend. LOL.

I think you guys are being a little hard on GSP. He fought the majority of that fight, against a very dangerous opponent, with one good eye. I like spectacular finishes and dominating performances as much as the next guy; but considering the circumstances I’d say he did pretty well.

Question for you guys.

I found it real interesting that his corner after the second was telling him he was fine and not done as he pointed out the eye injury to them.

A friend of mine said he is just not used to getting hurt. I obviously don’t agree with that and told him so (just on a pure nature of the game basis if nothing else) but I recall that GSP spent a very long hospital stay after a fight but for the life of me can’t remember which one it was.

Can anybody confirm that/provide the fight for me?

Personally, I think he started off well but flattened out quickly and I honestly feel bad for Shields, (as a competitor) because I really think that fight was within reach for him

As I watched Couture walk back to the locker room I was struck by how old he looked. That guy is my hero. 47 fuggin years old still doing this shit. You gotta have a screw loose. I wonder if Machida practiced that kick balanced on a piling looking out at the ocean. Randy has excellent hand position for boxing but literally had no defense what so ever for a kick up the middle like that. That was awesome.

Lastly, I don’t own any MMA shirts, etc. but think I will buy a Hominick walk-out T if they are selling them (not really but damn close). That guy has got to be one of the most game dudes out there. Very impressive. I am now his #1 fan and he better not crash his car on a mountain side because I will abduct him like a lightening bug in a jar and I would hate to have to hobble him Annie Wilkes style when he attempts to escape.

Believe it or not, I think I will get that card for free because they couldn’t make it play on all my cable boxes and I couldn’t record it because of that. I will call today to try and get it comped.

And you’re an idiot.

GSP knocks Shields down with a punch and later on knocks him down with a kick. He stuffs three of his takedowns and three other times when Shields grabbed his leg he masterfully got out of it. Furthermore, he took shields to the ground twice. And he did much of this with only one eye.

I have absolutely no patience for people who don’t understand this game, but think they do. And even worse don’t understand a champion who fights according to a well crafted strategy. Instead of saying bad things about GSP today people should be inspired by his performance under those conditions.

Think about it, GSP beat the best opponenent in the world at his weight class, a guy hadn’t lost in 7 years and who beat Dan Henderson. And he did it with one eye for three rounds.

Yeah, we should all try to become pussy’s just like GSP.

Penn 1 the same thing happened, BJ caught him in the eye which looked like knucle but many say it was a poke, and a grazing uppercut that broke GSP’s nose. GSP took the fight but left to the hospital while BJ didn’t have so much as a scratch on him.

zeb i have a tremendous respect for gsp fighting ability and the athlete he is and i think he was playing it way too safe by using his speed and it obvious that shields wasnt near as fast. even gsp conner man said leave your eye alone you can see…

I know what you mean I always call every great combat icon that I respect a pussy. Ali was a pussy, Roy Jones a pussy, and we all know that Dan Gable was the biggest pussy of all.

I know you’re never going to understand what you saw last night, but I’ll say it once more anyway.

  1. Every great fighter if he wants to stay on top comes into the fight with a game plan. The best stick to that game plan. And in fact in the post fight interview Shields even said that he didn’t have a good game plan. Irony?

  2. GSP knocked down Shields twice, first with a straight punch when he could actually see out of both eyes. And then later in the fight with a kick when he could only see out of one eye.

  3. From what I’ve read GSP lost only one round of the five round fight. That means that he won two rounds with only one eye against a guy who has not lost in seven years.

  4. Finally, just close one eye and see how good your depth perception is. And you want a fighter who is temporarily blinded in one eye to charge in flailing away? Uh huh.

Look we all love the spectacular fights. Machida’s front kick knocking out Couture was incredible. Anthony Pettis pushing off the side of the octagon and delivering a stunning head kick, amazing. But what we witnessed in GSP last night was also pretty spectacular in a different way. But you’d have to really understand and appreciate the game, and have empathy for the characters involved to apprecite it. Calling GSP a pussy doesn’t really show that type of understanding.

i still cannot stand s. segal. gsp and hominick were so dedicated and focused it was a great thing to see.

BJ has a remarkable chin. They just showed GSP/Penn I before the fights last night. BJ didn’t even look like he had been in a fight. Bj busted Georges up pretty good in the first round IIRC.

It’s a shame BJ never got serious with his S&C, because he has the skills to give anyone at 155 and 170 a tough fight. Hell, the guy hung with Machida when he was all fat and bloated just to move up in weight.

I never knock a guy for dominating 5 rounds, but let’s face it, GSP’s legacy has been hurt by his inability to finish fights. Couldn’t finish Hardy over 5 rounds, couldn’t finish a one-eyed Koscheck. He also got injured in the Alves fight. It just seems something happens in everyone of his fights.

Shields is a tough bastard and there is no shame in not finishing him.

If a GSP/Silva fight was booked tomorrow at a ctachweight, what do you think the odds would be? I would see Silva being favored in that fight.
