GSP v Hughes III

I’ve always felt Wandy was tailor-made for Chuck. He’s an ultra-aggressive brawler who leaves himself wide open for counters. He has never had the greatest chin in the world, and recently his legendary recovery ability has deserted him.

If Chuck can stay out of the clinch, I think he’ll spend all night circling away add he will eventually add a third straight ugly KO to Wand’s record.

That’s a big, big “if,” though. I have no idea how well Chuck would handle a really good Muay Thai clinch, but Wandy’s is as good as they get, and his knees are fucking brutal (see his Rampage fights). I just think Wandy’s got a whole lot more tools in his toolbox than Chuck does. And I think he’s physically stronger. And I think a year-long layoff will have him being fully, totally refreshed, renewed, pumped and ready for this, whereas Chuck has just come off of two recent losses and hasn’t had the same chance to clear his head, rest up and re-energize.

I predict Wandy will be at or very near the top of his game, and that Chuck will likely be no better than the Chuck we saw against Jardine (i.e. nowhere near the top of his game).

It really is too bad Chuck got knocked out so quickly in his fight with Rampage (whether you want to agree that he got “caught” or not). I would’ve liked to see that fight go on long enough for it to be an actual fight, and to see how Chuck really would’ve performed against 'Page.

Wasn’t the second fight between these two the one where hughes got kicked in the junk twice?

No. Not really. The first kick tapped him a bit, but it wasn’t intentional. Hughes himself admitted the second one didn’t hit him in the groin but rather the nerve on the inside of the leg. It caused him to lose leg control and he blamed it on a groin strike.

I really really really wanted to see Serra beat the crap out of Hughs, but aside from that probably not being entirely possible, I’m glad GSP stepped up. I’ll take GSP making Hughs his bitch-doll for 3 rounds.

Plus this way Serra will have some new Hughs impersonations to do! I about pissed myself at his antics on TUF. “Come on GSP!” jumps like a ballerina on crack “What the fuck? Ahhh! My balls!”

Hughes took GSP way too lightly the second fight. He won't make that mistake again and he's been training his ass off. Look for Hughes to surprise GSP this time, as it will be GSP who takes the opponent lightly in a reversal of fortune. Hughes by submission.

He's been talking about retirement etc on the show, and he wants his kids to remember their dad pummeling the shit out of opponents christian style..lol.

Seriously though, I'm going against the grain on this one guys. Call me crazy but we'll see.

This is a good assessment. I am a big GSP fan, but I have to say I agree with you and will be picking Hughes in this fight. I can honestly say I really hope I’m wrong though. I can see GSP taking on the other hand, but I think the fact that Hughes has been training so long to KTFO Serra and that he’s been discussing retirement are both indicators in his favor. He’s super competitive, and let’s face it, he wants to go out on top. He also remembers getting owned by GSP, so I’m sure he’ll want some payback for that one as well.

Btw, does anybody think that Serra is acting like a much bigger asshat than Hughes ever did? I always kinda disliked Hughes personality, but Serra seems to take it to a whole new level. I think he may get his commuppance in karmic retribution for all his shit talking. But it’s a heckuva lot of fun to listen to :).

No. Hughes is a Class A dick imo. Serra is a smartass, but the guy seems pretty cool and is a guy you could get drunk with and have a good time. Hughes on the other hand would pass out bibles and talk about gays going to hell and why abortion is murder, and at the same time blame everyone else on the planet but himself for the world’s problems.

Make no mistake though, if I had to put money on Hughes/Serra, I’d have a hard time betting against Hughes.

I’m not a big Matt Hughes fan, but I agree, Serra is every bit as big of a prick. He spends every second he can in front of the camera talking about what an asshole Matt Hughes is and what a dick blah blah, yet the two almost never interact for Serra to even get off saying that. From day one it’s been Matt Serra talking endless shit, as soon as he got the title.

I just wish the fight would have happened so Hughes could send Serra packing and we no longer have to talk about him being relevant to the top of that division.

I personally believe Matt Hughes will win this one. He has been training like an animal to destroy that prick serra. Tho I will give one thing to GSP tho is the fact that after his terrible performance against serra he will be going at it with everything he has. Should be an all out war.

Yeah, he was on my good side too for a while, but like everyone is saying, the guys just overdone it with the shit talking. Hughes has accomplished a shitload more than Serra, and the dwarf just blows wad after wad of negative shit about him. He's a jackass, and I lost all respect for him and the way he's treated Hughes.

Hughes is a hall of famer like Dana has said a few times on the show, and Serra is such a bitch he can't suck it up and admit it. Big losing mentality if you ask me. Karma's going to kick the shit out of his smart ass whenever he gets in there. Through all this Hughes has remained a class act.

Yea, it sure took a lot of class to make fun of someone who got kicked in the balls.

Even questioning that he got kicked there is classless. I met Serra a year ago and thought he was okay. But the more I see of him the more he proves himself to be a total asshole.

I’m really sorry that the fight is not happening-I wanted to see Hughes pound that little monkey into oblivion.

I’ve watched that fight countless times, and another guy mentioned it in this thread I think too, the first shot maybe clipped nut, the second wasn’t even close, and there was about a 5 second delay between Matt getting kicked and him dropping to the mat.

Hughes is/was a great fighter, I think he has a pretty good chance against GSP, and I’ve said three times now that he would pw3n Serra, but I really don’t like the guy. He is an arrogant, elitist fuck. Granted you have to take everything you see on TV with a dumptruck load of salt, so maybe he’s really not that bad in person. Serra obviously despises the guy, but from what I’ve seen on TUF, he seems like a genuinely nice guy(to everyone but Hughes), and imo is doing a better job of coaching too.

i don’t really like this at all. they had serra and hughes the coaches of TUF to hype up the season and to hype up their fight. they both talked a lot of shit about each other, especially Serra, and became a fight that i wanted to watch, specifically for the bad blood and the intrigue factor surrounding it. now gsp is going to beat hughes and we have to watch another serra gsp fight that gsp will almost certainly dominate. who knows if we will even get to see serra hughes now. i don’t like it.

Dude, Serra has a herniated disc in his back. He could barely get up off the MRI table, what do you want him to do? We all wanted to see that fight, but because of unfortunate circumstances it’s going to be delayed for a while.

bro,

i’m not saying that Serra should be fighting him now. that is the last thing i am saying. what i meant was they should have had Hughes fight someone besides GSP like jon fitch, or thiago alves, or simply pull the fight. they should wait til Serra gets better and then have this fight. GSP could fight either fitch or alves as well until Hughes and Serra fight.

This way, we can still see the Serra Hughes fight in the near future and the Hughes GSP fight will be for the actual belt instead of an interim belt.

Also, from Serra’s standpoint, you got to be a little suspicious. the man got hurt, that is undeniable. why are they having an interim belt match so soon? when sherk was hurt they waited for so long until he got better. with serra, i can see him getting the shaft. i have already read somewhere that if serra doesn’t get healthy in time, the winner of the interim match will be declared the actual champion. that’s a little f’d up if you ask me, for serra at least.
I misunderstood. You make some good points and I agree.

I’m really confused now. I saw the promo for it during the last TUF, the fight is still for the title? How the hell does that work?

It’s for the “interim title,” as devised by Dana White. The winner will fight Serra once he’s healthy for the “real” title.

Honestly I wish they’d just postponed the match and instead had a couple of potential contenders fight for the #1 contender position (for instance Fitch vs. Alves). Then if it became apparent that Serra wasn’t going to make a come back, or was going to take years to do so, then they could have Hughes and GSP fight for the actual title.
Dude, Serra won the title in, what, June? In a first round smoking of GSP in which he barely even got touched. Number 1, UFC shot themselves in the foot by delaying a title defence for six months, Serra and Hughes should’ve fought in September or October.

Number 2, he’s going to be gone for at least 3 months rehab (no data to back that up so I’m just throwing out a number) then he’d need about 3 more months to train for a fight, what you are therefore suggesting is that the title go undefended for a full fucking year? The lightweight, welterweight and heavyweight titles have already been held up for many many months. Serra will come back and fight the winner of GSP vs. Hughes or whoever the champion may be at that time. It would be devastating for the UFC to dilly dally anymore.

In case you were wondering, I believe Sherk should have been stripped of the title if he wasn’t willing to vacate it. With all the crap going on in Congress it would’ve been a great chance for the UFC to prove that they won’t tolerate that kind of crap in their organization. Couture will defend his title hopefully soon, or else he should be classy and vacate it. I’ve heard he and Rampage may meet at a catch weight, anyone else have any info backing that up?

This is incredibly disrespectful to Sean Sherk. You are presuming guilty until proven innocent. Especially in this particular case, rumblings indicate Sherk may walk like Marquahardt did. I for one applaud Dana White for standing behind his champion and allowing due process to take it’s course rather than bending him over and fucking him in the ass like they have done to other “boring” fighters.
