The reason why I ask is I got TOLD for grunting to much.
At my gym, which is of the local hard ass brand, the main gym guy basically told me to STFU, when I was curling and grunting. I guess he thought I was trying to look tight.
I’ve been working on my breathing since then,(I was born with acute respiratory problems so I breathe wierd anyways).
He said this.
“They are just fucking curls, not squats, shut the fuck up.”
I kinda felt like a dip shit after that.
I try to control my breathing, since then, I find it helps alot better and grunting comes from shit breathing.
I guess, squats are alright to grunt, curls are not alright, bench press maybe, deadlift maybe.[/quote]
It is not alright to grunt if you:
A) are curling anything under 60-70lbs.
B) are bench pressing the bar
C) are on your 15th set of the same exercise and still haven’t broken a sweat.
D) are on a machine that you have taken the pin out of so no actual weight is being lifted.
Chances are greater that you were being a jackass.
Jesus…lol…just spit Metabolic Drive all over the floor…
What’s with the shadow boxers? My local shadow boxer is now incorporating high kicks into his between sets ritual…I want to ask him if he’s training to be a rockette.

What is even more amusing is after they finish off their intesnse set its time to put the hood over their head on the hoodie for more intense shadow boxing.
Grunting is better than the hissing sound I heard the other day. This guy was benching 1 plate on each side , and hissing like a snake everytime he pushed the weight up. It sounded like, " 1…2…3… UP!!! PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS". I’ve always wondered if this was the right way to breathe… maybe someone can have some commentary on this.
As for me , I try not to grunt, but sometimes when you’re doing a giant triset , or when you’ve supersetted squats and romanian deads, you gotta let something out.
Sometimes when Im on a heavy set on squas (to failure) with mr 2-4 rep max I will breath realy loud and grunt a little before the last rep or so to help me get sohyked up for another rep.
People grunting at the power rack doesn’t usually bother me, if it’s one of the few people who are using decent form and such. I personally contort my face, and quietly grunt on my last few squats. It makes me feel manly
What I don’t get are the guys who from start to finish sound like some sort of poorly maintained piston… “TSSSSSSS TSSSSSSSS TSSSSSS”. It doesn’t help that they’ve got half the dumbell rack next to their bench so they can superset their curls while I now have nothing but 32 pounders to do shoulder presses with.

I was being a jack ass. I was on my like
4th set of curls. But I was curling 140 lbs, maybe twice, and then dropped to 125 lbs. So I guess I was just acting like I was hot shit, cuz I thought ahem THOUGHT, note no longer, that I was mister mega curl. I thought I was pretty hot shit that day before I got the old STFU. From the guy who owned the gym, and then put three plates on the bp, and made a wierd squeal when some kind of fiber ripped in my pec lol.
Noone had sympathy for me.
I’m gaining my respect at my gym back because right now all I do, is squats and running and dead lifts. I don’t give a shit about anything except for squats and running and dead lifts.
Once I squat, deadlift, and run, like I curl. I am a reformed frat curler mind you. I was a dumbass curler for a long time. Then I’m going to add new shit into my routine. But my base for now is always on squats, deadlift and running.
who cares if other people grunt?
I mean honestly does it really interfere with your training if someone else is making noise? Occasionally you might laugh, but that’s a healthy thing.
To me, complaining about grunting is like complaining about conversations or laughter or weight slamming. Sometimes it’s unnecessary or even a bit stupid, but does it really have that big of an effect on you?
Personally, I enjoy unnecessary grunting and the guy that plays terrible music loudly on his cell phone. That whole group of people gives me something to smile about in the gym, which relaxes me.
I only grunt when I squat or hang clean. I do it just to pump myself up and get that extra push, but I only do it on heavy weights–so coincidently it looks like I’m just trying to get attention.
