I’ve been trying to speed up my metabolism, eating smaller meals throughout the day and drinking green tea quite a bit. Does the tea thing really help or is it just marketing? Also, I drink the “naturally decaffeinated” stuff at night. If there is a benefit to green tea, does the decaffeinated stuff work too?
MODOK talked about how the EGCG is pretty fragile to heat potentially ruining all the benefits. Don’t boil. Also, warm lemon juice is supposed to help your body absorb the antioxidants more efficiently.

Green Tea and Trop 50 Lemonade. Arnold Palmer gets the job done every time.

Eating small frequent meals does not speed up your metabolism. Why do you want to “speed up” your metabolism anyway? Are you dieting to lose fat?[/quote]
Actually it does speed up fat burning metabolism as long as you eat any sort of fat with your meal. It is a little known fact that all fats are lipotropic (fat burning)

I want to lose a little fat, about 5lbs slowly. I’m 6’1 and about 203ish. I didn’t weigh myself before I started the Green Tea thing, but I’m feel better and look less bloated. Cutting out my daily bottle of soda (290 cal) has helped and I feel like I carry less water weight. So I’m not a diet really, more watching what and when I eat. I feel like the small meals keep me from excessive amounts of food while getting a fair amount of energy I need to lift.

I’ve seen a little of what MODOK has out there and seems to know whats going on. I’m gonna look into EGCG and the lemon juice further. I’ve never really paid much attention to my diet as long as I was getting enough protein. I realize its a hell of a lot easier to stay in shape with a good diet rather than trying to only build a body in the gym.

Care to put up any references? John Keifer and Martin Berkhan have plenty of research proving that frequent feeding does absolutely nothing for elevating metabolism. In fact theyve shown that fasting (in the short term i.e first 24-72hours) actually elevates metabolism.
Of course consuming fat would mean that your body is going to burn fat. Dietery fat! No Bodyfat will be burned initally. If you kept this up all day long your body would be burning only dietery fat and would have no need to tap into body fat.
For OP I would continue with the Green Tea if you enjoy it and forget about any idea of elevating metabolism. If at some stage you want to actually lose fat you will have to lower calories somewhat.
