The Pogues - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (an old folk song, but The Pogues version owns)

Is there any possible way to listen to Matilda without crying?
No, which is why I always listen to it alone. It creates the most awkward silence you can imagine in a group setting. I hesitated putting that up because I don’t really consider it “unknown”, but seeing some of the responses I doubt most people under 25 have any idea who The Pogues even are…

Great pick! Waits is amazing, especially when accompanied with a couple glasses of whiskey.

Just saw him in concert in Louisville. The greatest artist out there!!
I am green with envy, you bastard… I was going to see him in Asheville, but I couldn’t make it.

He has so many incredible songs… I’ve been enjoying Mr. Seigel lately:

I spent all my money, Mexican whorehouse baby
Across the street from a catholic church
Then I wiped off my revolver
And I buttoned up my burgundy shirt

I shot the morning in the back with my red wings on
I told the sun he’d better go back down
And if I can find a book of matches
I’m goin’ to burn this hotel down

You got to tell me brave captain
Why are the wicked so strong
How do the angels get to sleep
When the devil leaves his porchlight on

Well I dropped thirty grand on the nugget slots
I had to sell my ass on Fremont Street
And the drummer said there’s sanctuary
Over at the Bagdad room

And now it’s one for the money
Two for the show
Three to get ready and go man go
I said, ‘Tell me Mr Siegel, how do i get out of here?’

Willard’s knocked out on a bottle of heat
Drivin’ dangerous curves across the dirty sheets
He said, ‘Man you ought to see her when her parents are gone
Man you ought to hear her when the siren’s on’

I said, ‘Tell me brave captain
Why are the wicked so strong?
How do the angels get to sleep
When the devil leaves his porchlight on?’

Don’t you know that ain’t no broken bottle
That I picked up in my headlights
On the other side of the nevada line
Where they live hard die young
And have a good lookin’ corpse every time

well, you know the pit-boss said I should keep movin’
This is where you go when you die
And so I shot a black beauty
And I kissed her right between the eyes

Well willard’s knocked out on a bottle of heat
Drivin’ dangerous curves across the dirty sheets
He said when the bitch is wound up and her parents are gone
Man you ought to hear her with the siren on

I said, ‘Tell me brave captain
Why are the wicked so strong?
How do the angels get to sleep
When the devil leaves his porchlight on?’

I spent all my money girl in a Mexican whorehouse baby
Across the street from a catholic church

Greatest unknowns? Most of the rock I listened to most of the time would be known. Hmm, otherwise…

Just about every song on the Heartworn Highways soundtrack.

Most of Townes Van Zandt’s music, especially when its just him and a guitar.

Steve Earle - Darling Commit Me (on the soundtrack I mentioned)

Fred Eaglesmith - Alcohol and Pills, I Like Trains, Thinking, Pontiac

Any number of old blues men’s songs.

I know a guy in a punk band called The Riverboat Gamblers (they’re on amazon)and most of their music is a pretty good mix of bluesy punk rock and high energy, plus they put on a hell of a stage show and throw a good party.
Yeah, Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle have a ton of incredible songs between them.

Steve Earle’s “Lonelier than this” is one of the most poignant songs I’ve ever heard. Just incredible. (and what was with all the steve earle tunes in Talladega Nights?)

And Townes… Man, for those of you who haven’t heard him, do yourself a favor and find some of his albums. He has been called the greatest songwriter ever by quite a few people. I can’t disagre.

George Thorogood - “Gear Jammer”. That song frigging rocks.
He had another song than Bad To The Bone?

I have to go old school here and propose DON’T LET NO ONE GET YOU DOWN, by WAR. It just lifts me up.

MasterBlaster

Verbal Assault - Understand

get’s my ass back in gear.

“The Other Side” - From Zero

“Hollow” - Submersed

Apologies if any of these are well known and I just didn’t realise…

 • ‘Persuasion’ - Rory Gallagher
 • ‘Dry County’ - Bon Jovi
 • ‘Blue Jean Blues’ - ZZ Top
 • '(Don’t Let 'Em) Grind Ya Down - Motorhead
 • ‘Telegraph Road’ - Dire Straits

By the way, I can almost never pick just one of something - I nearly always give my top 5. This habit started after watching High Fidelity.

Was talking to a friend about songs that have had the greatest impact on us, and I realized that the ones we listed are probably completely unknown to most people. It seems like the songs that truly touch people are not going to be on the top 40.

I came to the conclusion that I am probably missing a lot of great music. What is your number one unheard song??

 1. Coma - Guns and Roses
Don’t get me wrong Coma is one of GNR’s best, but I don’t see how it can touch people.

You were going in the right vein though.

Breakdown - Guns 'n Roses

Jailhouse rob - A18

Very nice tune, as is “14 years”, but my fave of Use Your Illusion I and II is “Estranged”.

Great song - just put that on my mp3 player today having not listened to it for a couple of years!

my contribution: “Kate” by ben folds five. it’s hard to pick one song by them since there’s so many, but it’s such a happy song, always makes me smile, and it was my introduction to my now favorite band (even though they no longer exist, sob).

Anyone else like ben folds / ben folds five?

The Who - Teenage Wasteland (it’s amazing how many people say they haven’t heard this BAMF song…)

The title of “Teenage Wasteland” is “Baba O’Reilly”… I was going to pick that one too. I don’t know why, I am not a big Who fan.

I also really like Rocket Queen by GnR (Kuz)

A few others…
Led Zeppelin - Thank You (and just about anything other than Stairway…)
Metallica - Astronomy (originally a Blue Oyster Cult song)
Savatage - Edge of Thorns
Peter Gabriel - Salsbury Hill (I was reminded of it again last night on Rock Star)
that’s weird that I typed teenage wasteland because that’s one of those obscure facts I like to jam into peoples faces.

ain’t that a bitch… how ironic

His cover of Dr Dre’s “bitches aint shit” is classic. Funny stuff.
“Brick” is my fav

Ballad In Urgency > Wiser Time by The Black Crowes. I seen them do this live about ten years ago with some good friends and the thought of it still gives me chills.

Brighter Day by Mofro. These are some hometown boys who write some deep music. The lyrics and message in this song really hit close to home.

Anything by The Black Keys just because they are so fucking awesome. Google The Black Keys now!

Estranged is also a great tune.

Coma struck me because the lyrics knocked me out of a slump. It showed me that the mistakes in life are not other peoples doing, but my own.

“when the bell stopped ringin it was nobodys fault but your own.”

I could spout off the entire song but that line fits the general message it gave me.
