Gratuitous Use of the N Word?

Can you explain to me what being “stereotypically white” entails?
I have a strong feeling if anyone wrote “stereotypically black” in one their posts, he’d back asking them that same type of question.
What word should I use to describe someone who completely goes against urban culture, uses no slang, ignores all Hip Hop or historically black pop culture references and who, if they did use the word, would do so in a way that would let everyone around them know they not only don’t use it often but are using it out of context in a way that is not socially accepted?

If you use “stereotypically black” in a negative way, you can bet I will ask what you mean…but NOTHING like that was done here at all making your statement irrelevant.
Your main point here is context, right? So if I tried to make some new homeys and in a non threatening, friendly tone said, as the bodyguard jokingly (I think) suggested, “Ayo I got next nigga”, it’d be cool? But wait…I don’t sound stereotypically black. SHIT. So to avoid getting beaten up, I’d have to adopt thug mannerisms too?
WTF? Are you really this stupid? If you SOUND like someone who is awkward saying the fucking word, expect for people to react as such.

Wait, do you really think the people around you can’t tell by how you speak, act, dress and look whether this is natural to you?

It is no different than some white guy trying to dap me up when he clearly doesn’t know how to do it. I might not be “offended” but he would damn sure be labeled a wannabe in short order.

Why do you think other people are blind to WHO you are?
You’re right, it WOULD be posing if i said it, congratulations X. That’s why I don’t use the word. AGAIN, I don’t need advice on how to properly use the word, I’m raising awareness that there’s a double standard that shouldn’t be tolerated. I’s almost as though your solution to the problem is for white people to start “acting stereotypically black”. I don’t ignore hip hop, and I can quote black pop culture references all day long…but that still wouldn’t be enough to prevent me getting jumped if I casually let “nigga” slip out at the wrong time.

Some of you are over analyzing this. I hear Asians say it now all the time and they don’t sound black. They may use “urban vernacular”, but they don’t sound black. I grew up playing ball. I was infamous in these parts in my day, and all local players knew me. I wouldn’t dream of walking up to the court and announcing, “I got next niggas”. There would more than likely be someone there that was not personally acquainted with me and I wouldn’t risk offense. In the same context, someone well known might walk up and greet me and tell me he wants to run with me and depending on who it is, I might reply “I got you my nigga” - a clear context of affection and telling him I got a spot for him on my squad.

CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT

If you learned anything from this video, then “nigger” should not be in your audible vocabulary:

Solution to the problem? What problem? Why would a white person ignore all of history that is so recent people are still living who experienced it just to say a word out of context? I don’t use the word and haven’t in many years. I also know that I see many guys using this word who are NOT black when they are with their friends and no one says a word in opposition.

I also know that we had some guy complain that white comedians can;t joke about black people…which is complete bullshit today. There are MANY white comedians who do whole skits on the use of that word as well as make fun of black people and no one says anything.

Once again, you seem to be living in a perpetual 1985 unaware that the world kept spinning.

It is not a word used in a professional setting so until we hear what exactly was said in this meeting some guy got fired from, quit jumping to conclusions.

The word will eventually lose any power it has…but my MOM still remembers Colored only water fountains so how fucked up is it that you are willing to ignore this as if HISTORY isn’t the reason for the double standard?

Blame YOUR PARENTS, not the black people who were the fucking victims less than 40 years ago if you want to blame someone at all.

I don’t like double standards. But in this case, we’re talking about a word that has a lot of hateful, hurtful history. And although words like this probably exist within many “tribes” of people, this word in particular has a history probably unlike any other in our world or other cultures. If you’re not from that “tribe”, you don’t shoplift their vernacular without risking offense, not because there’s necessarily a “double standard” but because your use of the word could easily be construed to be offensive where the same word used by the tribe would not cause such confusion. A black person calling another black “nigger” is unlikely a racial insult. A white person using the word might cause a moment of pause…and in that moment, there can be discomfort - not necessarily a double standard. A black person doesn’t have to mentally pause and ponder “how did he MEAN nigger” when another black person uses the word…he knows exactly how it was used.

What problem? How about the fact the the civil rights movement strove for equality but there’s still injustice at the local basketball court? The fact that I’m not allowed a certain word BECAUSE I"M WHITE. Or that whenever I ball my identifier is “that whiteboy”, but to respond in kind is what gets labeled racism.

No, blame the 20 year old kids that use the word who have no idea what it means to be discriminated against and are pimping the race card for all its worth. Yes, it was 40 years ago…not yesterday.

What history am i ignoring? As I’ve said before, I’m not lobbying to use the word; If I can’t, NO ONE SHOULD. Maybe using the word jokingly is what’s really spitting in the face of history.
Blah blah blah black people take a bad thing and make it their own, whatever…that could be true for another generation, not this one.

So what? My grandfather was beat over the head and had fire hoses aimed at him…yet you are crying because you can’t say a word without people looking at you funny?

How fucking pathetic.

You will have to excuse me if I don’t lose any sleep over your issues on the basketball court…with all of those black people you apparently hang around all day long…who, in spite of knowing you still won’t accept that from you.

I mean, you DO hang around a lot of black people, right? I mean, that is the only way your response makes any sense.

Shit, when was the last time a black guy was even in your house?
DBCooper wrote:
You know, this whole N-word thing is totally ridiculous. Think about it: sure nigger is an offensive word and whites who use it in reference to blacks sound like uneducated racists, but the same isn’t said if I call someone a wop or a kike if I’m joking with them. If I were to jokingly call SteelyD a wop, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But if I called Prof X a nigger in a joking manner, the shit would hit the fan!

When it comes the word “nigga”, it’s even more ridiculous! How many words can you think of that are only socially-acceptable for one particular ethnicity and totally unacceptable for other ethnicities to use? There aren’t any, except for nigga. I’m white, so I’m not “allowed” to use the word. I wouldn’t use it anyways because it is just a shortening of an offensive word and also because I would sound fucking retarded throwing that word around.

I’m not too crazy about tossing racial slurs around in a joking manner because I never quite know how certain people are going to react and to me it personally sounds a little “uncouth”, but if we ARE going to be throwing them around, then why is it that nigger has to be the one that gets excluded? Yeah, yeah, I know that blacks were enslaved here and all that, but let’s be honest. Go back throughout history and you’ll see that literally every race, color and creed has been enslaved at some point.
I don’t know what you look like, but if you came into my neighborhood and started calling me racial names, we’re gonna start throwing dukes.

If you’re a friend of mine, that’s different. I’m more likely to call a friend a slur than a enemy. The fact is that if you’re going to walk around calling anyone names, you better be ready to defend yourself from an assault.

You are fucking insane. An entire racial category was beat down for over 300 years in this country yet guys like you want to make an issue because, in spite of having a clear social advantage 99% of the time even today because of being white, you can’t do EVERYTHING a black guy does because of dreaded double standards.

My guess is, if the average black guy could avoid being treated like a potential criminal just for walking in a store for not being able to scream the “n word”, I am betting most would choose to let go of the fucking word.

No one is crying for you here.

In fact, just the opposite.

You’re being pretty sheltered if you do not believe the word “nigger” still might mean something to the 20 year old as if we have suddenly (without anyone informing me!) ended all prejudice. The negative word is still alive, well and being used.

If someone is looking to take offense as you imply, they simply don’t like you and “nigga” is just an excuse. So, it goes back to you (and context), and not the word per se.

Do you think a black guy could go to a park in Bensonhurst NY, stroll up to the young 20-something year old Italians and announce, “which one of you greasballs has next, I’m trying to get a run”? But that same black guy could probably greet his close Italian friend with a “yo you fucking greaseball dego, what’s up?”. Yet again, were he to utter the foregoing with some older italian men in the background, there would be offense taken.

CONTEXT my boy, context.

Sounds to me like you’re just unremarkable in every respect. Guess what? Here’s a news flash. If you’re common, and unremarkable, the world is not your oyster. Every common everyday person struggles to get into college, find a job, advance in their career, etc.

And if you’re the only white guy within a 20 mile radius, how are you not poor as you deny above? What middle class majority black neighborhood is this??

Dude, please. The Clinton admin actually did studies where a black persn would go for a job and then a white person. They did the same for housing and schooling…and in the majority of those setting, being white helped them get the job or house or apartment…and that was in the 90’s.

If you are now claiming being white is NO social advantage at all, you are fucking crazy.
