Got a Question for a Top Contest Prep Guru?

Hey folks,

I just got word that a very popular contest prep guru has agreed to do a Q&A column for TMUSCLE readers.

All areas related to competing at a high level are up for grabs: drugs, diet, last week tips, weak point specialization, dirty tricks; you name it.

Because it’s going to be a No Holds Barred kinda column, our source will remain anonymous. But that also means that no topic is too taboo.

How prevalent is synthol use amongst top pros?

I’d be interesting in seeing a pre contest drug protocol he prescribes to competitors, I imagine it doesn’t vary THAT much. It would be really neat to see exactly what the big boys use to get ready.

Obviously the drug portion will be intriguing, but a simple look at their rep ranges (6 months out, 3 months out, 1 month out etc.) would be great.

A precise look at their nutrition, and I mean every single thing that they consume, would be nice. As painful as it seems, it would be very interesting to see just how much they restrict themselves as they get closer and closer to showtime.

Hey way,
Not to get too off topic, but something posted by a top IFBB pro at another board concerning pre contest drug use goes as follows:

"GEAR

Use normal bulking gear until 4 weeks out (test, a-50, d-bol, deca, etc).
4 weeks out switch the test to test propionate or suspension. Drop the Deca/EQ, etc. Add primobolan, tren, winny, etc.
One week out, only use tren, masteron, suspension, primo tabs, winny.

Use GH throughout - as much as you can afford. No
insulin.

Use Arimidex or Nolvadex every day as desired. To keep
your testes at a normal size, either use HCG every 4th
week (2,000IU on Mon, Wed, Fri) or 50mg EOD of Clomid
throughout the whole thing. Don’t use these for the last 4 weeks before the show though.

Cutting compounds: Use a good ECA product like SyntheBURN twice a day, every day. Use Clenbuterol at 80mcg/day for the first week.
Increase it to 160mcg/d for the second week. The third week you
add 25mcg/d T3. You add another 25mcg/d every week
following that, until you reach 150mcg/d. You stay on
that until the end of the diet. You stay on
Clenbuterol thoughout as well. Yes, you will be
racing! But you will not loose any muscle, so do
not worry about that (as long as you take your protein
in).

Last week do your diuretics program."

Go over how to set someone up to get ready for show, from anywhere between 3 to 5 months out.

How to asses how long someone is going to have to diet for a show?
How often is progress measured (eg, every 2 weeks, every day?)
Cardio. How much? What type?
What to do when behind schedule?

Simple question maybe, but I’ll still ask.

How exactly do diuretics (both herbal and/or pharmaceutical) work, and do female competitors use as much as the male ones?

A top pro? I don’t think he placed top 15 in any US show he entered.

He’s somewhat biased about these things since those ergo aids pay his bills.

What is the psychology like at the upper levels of bodybuilding? I imagine the severity of the prep combined with the pressure of performing at your best against other elite competitors would be great to hear about.

I’ll bite though…

What do you think is the primary difference in “quality” of conditioning of 90s bodybuilders who routinely had striations in the shoulders/chest/arms on stage versus guys now who are equally defined but appear almost softer?

My guess is site injections in those bodyparts causing inflammation or the prevalence of insulin but I’d like to hear other opinion.

I know that it is probably not possible in this instance, but a documentary that started at the end of the off-season (or bulking phase) and gave us a complete inside look from then all the way up to the show would be very intriguing and extremely entertaining.

Also’ a bit of random request, what is the average cost in $ per annum to stay in competitive mode, basically how much would a top level Bodybuilder spend on anabolics?

How much does he cahrge per week to follow someone, what’s his criteria for acceptance?

The GH is what costs $ becuase its the stuff that you cant make in your home and the price truly does represent the quality.

I’ve seen websites selling hormone powder for $1 per gram. You can do the math.

Please no one PM me I dont buy illegal drugs off the internet so I have no idea if the websites are real

2 questions:

How popular is DNP with the top guys today?

Are the rumors that some guys will use substances such as cocaine, speed, ect. to help them diet true? If they are true is it common?

i’d like to hear his take on water/sodium/carb manipulation for peak week in a natural competitor - everyone seems to differ on this, but the prevalent opinion this week seems to be in favor of not cutting water or messing w/ sodium, though people have been cutting it for years and plenty of them look full and hard on stage.
