Good Price for a Smith&Wesson?

I want a used wesson 357 mag or 38 special. I want a good deal on one. What are the chances of me getting a legit deal on a decient one for $300?

I would think the chances are good. I just sold a S&W Model 25-5 (.45 Long Colt) for $285.00 I’m sure the gun store will mark it up, but I can’t imagine it will be that drastic.

I would say it’s possible to find a S&W for that price…but that’s a good deal. >$350 is more likely.

Are you married to a S&W?

The Ruger GP-100 is in the same price range and built like a tank.

Thanks guys, I like the style of the s&w and have been wanting to get one for a while however the GP100 that you mentioned looks like a very fine gun so I will remember that while im shopping.

The best ive seen on a wesson here is 400 and I wasn’t thrilled over the condition. I was thinking about waiting till a gun show and asking for a deal there, but I will check out Gunbroker.com too.

BTW whats a good 6 shot model to look for?

What are you going to use it for? I have always liked the S&W Bodyguard for use as a pocket/concealed weapon.

Personal protection. I wont be carrying it every day or anything like that, but a good gun to keep on the nightstand. Ive been robbed twice. It dosent have to be snubnose but i want the barrel 4" or less.

This is a sweet custom.

heres mine, its been in my family since the 70s
mom traded a high patrol officer for a new 9mm she had

its a s&w 28.2 357 highway patrol special I put 38 spl target rounds thru it for worry of overpenetration
in its current condition its worth about 400 simple no frills, marketed to police and millitary

even with thousands of rounds thru her it is the most accurate peice I have ever handled
I love the old N-frames and I carry this one daily it is a little heavy on the hip but its worth it

I think these things are becoming harder and harder to find really.
if you want a decent peice at a great price look into LLama/Bersa
they are good quality and the price you cant beat on most of them

my mom has a thunder 45 now and she loves it
unless you strictly want one of these.
like i said mine is almost 50 years old been in the family over 30 and still shoots straight and true every time.

Can’t go wrong with a 686, but I don’t know if you can get one for $300. You may have to keep an eye out for one of the blued models previously shown in the thread.

Good deals at gun shows - plus, if you have no CCW there is no 3 day wait.

Thanks for the replies. Nich, that is a nice revolver you have there. Thats exactly what I want. A gun I only have to purchase one time. I want my grandkids to be able to hit bullseye with it. I found a police issued 357 in a pawn shop 3 years ago for a good price and I turned it down. Hopefully another will come along.

Someone else mentioned the Ruger gp-100 and I am gonna second that. I have one. They are great firearms and an exceptionally accurate pistol I use mine to deer hunt.

Also the Ruger security 6 used to be what police carried before they swaped to 9mm then to 40cal. The market is really flooded with them and you can usually find them for about 200 bucks.

Taurus makes several models as well that are inexpensive and still quality. Such as the tracker series.

I will warn you that a small frame 357mag is gonna have a great deal of recoil though. GP-100 with a 6" barrel is not bad and a follow up shot is possible. A S&W model 60 (or something similar) 357mag is a rough kicking gun that is gonna go over your head and you are gonna have to hold on to.

Yeah I was wondering if recoil would bee too hard. I was thinking about just keeping 38 special rounds in it for protection, and just shootng magnum rounds for fun.

I origianlly wanted a s&w. Would I be disappointed with a ruger security six in .357? Can i pick one of these up in 357 for around $200??

I would think just the opposite. Shoot the 38’s for fun and keep the 357 magnums for the serious business. I had a stainless 686. It used to be my buddy’s duty weapon. Shooting 38s was tons of fun. I could do it all day. Can’t say the same for the magnums. Those were work. The lessons you learn on the 38’s transfer well to the magnums.

I personally think buying S&W is buying a name but i will say that they ave very quality guns. S&W is not the only company that makes nice pistols though.

Ruger is ledgendary for the quality of their revolvers and Taurus is really catching on as well. Check out the Ruger Blackhawks and Redhawks some time. They are top of the line. Those 2 Ruger models are very expensive though.

I always advise people to get the security six because of the quality and avablity of them. If i didn’t have the GP-100 already i would buy a Six for myself.

Price is the limiting factor, I only have $300 to spend on one and I want quality.

The picture in my last post is a Security Six. As you can probably tell it is a bit large for a CCW. You should have no problem finding one on gunsamerica.com or gunbroker for about that price.

In my opinion Ruger is the top of the line for revolvers. The blackhawks are legedendary. I have 2 myself. I got a GP-100 .357 and a Vaquero 45LC. Here is the Vaquero, but they are expensive.
