Hey guys ive been living here in the city for about 3 months now working out just using my home equipment. Im moving to a place with no backyard though off of Georgia Avenue, and im looking for a serious gym. Ive done some research but everything seems to be for the treadmill and metrosexual masses, and lets be real, thats the last crowd i want to deal with. Anyone know a no frills, hardcore gym in the D.C. area? thanks!
Some elite lifters and athletes train at Rockville Fitness off Nicholson Ln. I train there as well and like it a lot, you should check it out.
that place looks sweet, but a bit far, im afraid, I dont have a car, and im guessing it would take over an hour to get there my metro, any ideas about things closer? perhaps the people at rockville fitness might have affiliates in the city?
thanks for responding though, I was afraid this would go unanswered and im really eager to start lifting in a serious environment again.
can you post the website for Rockville Fitness…don’t mean to be an idiot…just can’t find it…
One was fine, two was really pushing it, but now three is a trend.
Come on, Bab Saget? Really? Did you have to?

One of us… one of us… one of us…
Any good gym is going to be outside the city - either in dumpy ‘Muryland’ or Virginia. That’s probably the result of an agency-bottle-fed, bland and boring populace.
And for any Washingtonians(…) here come the common rebuffs…“But we have museums! We also have performing arts, cherry blossoms, and wonderful monuments!” - Fuck that, it’s like a container ship carrying imported birth control sank in the Potomac and polluted the drinking water. It’s symbolic in a way, as if the entire combined ambition of Washington D.C. was to hit a tapas bar, chat up a mediocre transient intern about some book you read at your lame liberal arts school, and finally curl up in your overpriced (85% more expensive by contrast to the national average) dilapidated rowhouse (which you rent because it has history). Makes sense for a city impotent enough to not have a single skyscraper. If you value all that is associated with testosterone than stay away from D.C. or make your way into politics.
Note: This does not apply to you if you are homeless, which could very well be if you are in D.C. and reading this.
dumpy maryland? wow, not really sure how to respond to that one hoss (j/k)
lol, im here more because i had an internship through my school that led to a job, not saying i love the place, but id rather live in the city than deal with a long daily commute. And teres gotta be some ghetto, no frills gym somewhere which the basics and no nonsense people.

Three years here and nothing! DC is boring shit. I can’t wait to move somewhere warm.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about, I like DC. The winters do suck, but there is a lot of stuff to do and lots of beautiful women.

The guy that started that post is Matt Gary, he lifts there with his wife Sioux-z who is a 13 time national powerlifting champion and a world champion at least once. Both of them know their stuff and are more then willing to help you out if you show you are serious about powerlifting.
I don’t think Rockville Fitness even has a website, they were formerly called Planet Fitness but the big shitty company with the same name made them change to Rockville Fitness. They have a competition rack, bumper plates and deadlifting platform, kettle bells, reverse hyper, GHR, as well as all the normal gym stuff. This is all the info I have:
Rockville Fitness
4961 Nicholson Court
Kensington, MD 20895
If you stop by and ask they usually give you a free week to check it out.
DUDE Kensignton is close!!!
that place is only 4miles from the Weaton Mall, which is right next to the metro station
the walk from the metro stop to rockville fit is pretty far. try balance gym off of Connecticut Ave near the Reagan hilton. nothing fancy but it’s geared towards crossfitters so there is a lifting platform, bumpers and no one looks at you odd if you drop a weight.
I’ve lived in dc off and on for 11 years and have searched high and low for a good gym within city limits, setting foot into almost every big commercial fitness center and every small independent gym I could find and was always disappointed. Even the golds I used to go to got rid of their power cage. Couple years ago I said fuck it and built
Don’t know how close you are to American University, but I believe that people can join the gym here. The varsity weight room (which is open about half the time, more in the evenings) Has a bunch of benches/power cages/platforms.
I am not sure what the rate is either, but you could check out some of the other schools if they are closer to you.
yeah doublesided, I tried to do that with Catholic University, but they were dicks and said no one but catholic athletes could use the gym. Robo, ill check out balance gym.
Rockville sounds perfect, but also a bit too far for me.
