Good Genetics or Pure Hard Work?

Ok heres a picture for you,
Theres a bodybuilder, hes better than you, hes bigger, his arms nearly rip his sleeves, his chest stretches his t-shirt and his legs are pumped than yours.
How far can you say “oh its because he’s got good genes thats why hes better than me”??
I personally think its bull. I think you cannot blame someone better than you as better genetics, I think its just the fact that he has put in more effort than you which is why he is bigger.
Being a beginner I need all the motivation I can get and I dont want “bad genes” to get me down!

Am I right?

If you’re just starting out don’t worry about what someone else was blessed with. Do not even worry about what you were blessed with. Your competition should be against yourself and not the other members of the gym (unless you plan to get on stage.) Focus on your training. Do the things you know you should do. Do them consistently and with passion and you will reap great benefits from this sport.

Yes, the quicker someone can take genetic limitations out of the picture the more free he’ll be to put on mind-blowing size.

And really, how can anyone judge how big they can get until they put in the years under the heavy weights and BK drive-thru’s that it takes to get there?

(the BK thing was a bit of a joke, but only a bit!)

Well okay, in all fairness, you can’t “blame” genetics for a lot of things, but you really can.

It’s quite possible that the person you’re looking at jacks around in the gym, has no real training philosophy, and hits his legs about as often as Rosie O’Donnell is actually listened to. About genetics, I feel you can’t really assume someone has better ones than you, but they can definitely be a contributing factor.

It’s then I realize it was ME the whole time just looking in the mirror!

Bodybuilding, more than any other sport, directly reflects the work you put or don’t put in.

Most people even myself don’t train till they reach their genetic limit nor have a solid diet plan to support that notion all year round…

To put someone down with the genetics BS is like saying, a well-groomed man with expensive clothes on the street prolly robbed a bank to get rich… however having good genes are always a bulk on envy lol

Its because of steroids obviously

Really worry about yourself and your progress, don’t try to compare yourself to every other person when your first starting out especially.
Just realize there are three things you need to get big, rest, hard work, and food. Do that for a few years and you’ll be pretty well off.

I think we’re kidding ourselves if we don’t acknowledge that genetics plays a part in our development.

Off the top of my head, I think the two main effects of genetics are;

1 - it dictates how big we can naturally get - ie; our limitations.

2 - it dictates how different parts of our bodies grow. For example, some people can put mass on different parts of their body with less effort than others.

That being said, I don’t think that genetics are really something that should be considered in too much detail, as very few people truly reach their genetic limits.

You’re absolutely right though - effort is a bigger piece of the puzzle. That, and knowledge.

I think that body is like a building, genetic is just the material to work with and by folowing the appropiate technique, any material will be worth to work with. 10 years ago, the perception of myself was not even close at what is now and something that amaze me this year in bodybuilding is how my muscles were there, waiting for me to do the right thing and force them grow. that stuff of genetic is just an game for some people, just look at the mirror and try to focus on the parts you want to make better than before not better than anyone else. in no time, people will start to ask you how you did it. I know a kid very skinny (if you think I am skinnny you have to see him) I theach him some of my tricks (nobody help me, so i found many on this place) and two months later he has results, shoulder and bicep mainly LOL, but he overcomed his genetic that dictates that in no special condition he has to be thin. now he has muscle, why do you worry about? you can, just try it in your way and close your ears to comparison to others, the only fair comparison is to yourself. “Ceteribus Paribus”

“…just look at the mirror and try to focus on the parts you want to make better than before not better than anyone else.”

I like that.

I always believe that genetics and hard work are equally important when it comes to improving yourself. The best thing to do is work as hard as you can and see how far your genetics can take you.

However, I’m also a firm believer in the human spirit and transcendence. Through sheer force of will, you can get past anything, even your sucky genetics.

Genetics is huge, don’t discount it.

No matter how hard I work I will never play in the NFL or be a pro bodybuilder. I could be an excellent distance runner but unfortunately that is not my interest.
