Good Basic Fighting Style

Malair ready for work as a bouncer.

Here’s the 2 best street tips I’ve come across in my years bouncing.

First, carry a handful of sand in your pocket at all times. If someone decided to talk shit or mug you with a knife, throw the sand in his eyes. One of the nastiest trick in the books, but extremely effective. He’ll be almost defensless, so you can either run away or follow up with whatever you want.

Second, get a stab-proof shirt made of carbon(I don’t know the correct english translation). Knifes are, at least here in Europe, a LOT more common than guns.

Or you could get the whole package which I always wore when I was working, bulletproof shirt, carbon pants, cup, carbon shoes, and the best thing of them all, gloves with lead plating in them.

That last thing is a loophole in European law because it’s not viewed as an illegal item/weapon, yet will protect your hands from breaking, protect against knifes AND increase the impact of your punch. You can grab the sharp part of a knife with your hands and it won’t cut trough. That makes knife-defense a shitload easier.

So I hear that new Iron Man power armors some good stuff if your wanting to be prepared for the possibility of being mugged.

^hahaha-- I’m confused, is this guy trying to be funny or is he actually serious? Really man, where exactly were you a bouncer, Iraq?

Did all the bouncers you worked with carry all this Armour? Thats pretty hardcore but I guess in dangerous job its almost must.

Please. This guy is full of shit. [/quote]

I don’t go to night clubs often, so really I don’t know if they wear full military gear.

Come on fellas, ease off of Malchir. What he’s saying sounds strange, but at least he’s not being a dick about it. He’s taking the teasing pretty damn well.

my GOD this brings out the tough guys lol

Screw “style” find a GOOD TEACHER that is able to put up with you.
For self-defense do not take karate, kick-boxing,or tae kwan do
(basically any kicking based art) unless you can find an EXCEPTIONAL teacher, not so good in close quarters.

Decent Judo and Jiu-Jitsu schools do not seem hard to find.
Tai Chi chuan works too, if it is taught as a martial art and not a hippy art, done right it’s a lot muay tai with dirty tricks, joint locks, and knee-breakers thrown in for good measure. Can you tell I’m biased ?

I completely agree. I study (Japanese) Jiu Jitsu and Karate, and my sensei is a fantastic teacher. I guess it helps that he uses his skills every day as a police officer, and both styles are extremely functional in real world applications.

Thats true, but this thread wasn’t started to let people who are relatively new to these forums tell what sound like made up stories.

I don’t know. His stories are no more hard to believe, from my perspective, than any of the usual, ‘throat strike’ or ‘gun disarm’ or ‘carry a knife’ or ‘multiple attackers, you grapplers are fucked’ - in fact, I actually find him much more believable since he included details in his descriptions while most of you just bagged on grappling as ‘useless against multiple attackers, what happens when your instincts take over and you take your opponent down and then his friend comes along and hits you with a bat’ at least he included rational arguments and reasoning for his position. The rest of you just seem to offer up some idiotic shit designed to counter any position sport grappling or fighting takes.

ya, I can’t even understand why people don’t believe him. All he said is “I am a weird guy and I wear full body armor to my job. I bounce (not in the USA) at a place that employees a lot of us. once I got stabbed by a pocket knife. It didn’t pierce my bullet proof vest but it did leave a bruise on my ribs.”

What there is unbelievable? Funny, yeah, but come on. I knew kids growing up who wore bullet proof crap around while we played guns with squirt guns in the street. I know many bouncers who have been attacked. I know clubs that employee many bouncers. I have dropped something heavy on my foot before that didn’t break thru the shoe but left a bruise. Why can’t this guys story be all of them in one?

Oh well, guess I am just missing this one.

I’ve re-read my own posts, I tried to be as full as possible with them, but I indeed seem to come off as an “internet tough guy” if you don’t know the situation.

I don’t really care to defend my points any further on the internet, so I’ll just stay on-topic from now on.

If people want to have a closer look at my club, there are some nice highlights on youtube of it. Just type in “cherrymoon”.

I call bullshit. If you learn to wrestle you may not be as good as a guy who’s done it since he’s 5 just like you’ll never be floyd mayweather, but to give up on it because you’re “to old” in college is crazy

I fully agree. There’s no reason to be the next fedor/gracie/bruce lee for self-defense.

Why not have the full package and learn wrestling/BJJ/thaiboxing/boxing(or all at once in an MMA-class) and take a few try-outs in other popular classes, especially aikido, wing chun, tkd, karate and krav maga just to know their strengths and weaknesses?

Something that hasn’t been discussed with all the throat punching, groin stomping, ear biting, type advice is that force begets force.
If I’m in a fight and using fists thats one thing. But if I do a throat punch that elevates things quite a bit. If you’re eye gouging and all that crazy stuff, you’ve just turned a bar fight into a lethal confrontation. I’ve been hands on with someone before while I had a knife in my pocket. It stayed in my pocket. So to the thread starter, just remember you reap what you sow.
Before I get flamed I absolutely understand the need for ruthless tactics and “Gun-Jitsu” in a life or death situation. I just don’t think every confrontation has to go there.

Edit: Also if you look up at the top you’ll see that this is the “Combat Sport” forum, so if you’re in here bitching about sport fighters, you’re probably being a troll. Whether that’s your intention or not I don’t know.

I think a great way to decide whether or not you are going to want to pursue higher styles of martial arts is to start at either tae kwan do or brazilian ju jitsu. I would stay away from things like wrestling, judo, or boxing because most of those are a sport and not much else. However, if you want to do one of these, go for it. I happen to love wrestling and think it is a lot of fun. However, it is DEFINITELY not street defense.

There’s no such thing as “street defense”. Nothing can prepare you for what you have to do. Most people freeze and most arent brave enough to actually fight for their lives. A block will help you, but do you have the courage to break the guy’s arm?
There’s one thing that can trump strength and technique and this is anger/intent.

If someone really wants to kill you and attacks with the purpose to kill, you have to fight back with the same ferocity or you ll get your ass kicked. This is a generalisation but it holds alot of water.

Am I seriously reading a post that says essentially “Do Tae Kwan Do because its self defense and not a useless sport like boxing or Judo???”

Jesus H. Christ kills a kitten whenever a thread like this comes up.

The best advice ever written by a man with regards to “self defense.”

  1. Get jacked as hell. Like, super big. Pissed off Hulk big.

  2. Be a nice guy, but not a puss.

  3. Be really confident, but not an asshole.

  4. Do SOMETHING.

Aside from that, all practices, from boxing to karate, jiu jitsu to shuai chiao, will get you stabbed/raped/rapestabbed for being a douche.

There is no street fighting. There’s some dumbass getting jumped because he wasn’t paying attention. Someone says anything else, see what they’re selling.

Good rules, but the whole rapestabbed thing, though hilarious just in its verbage, is over dramatic, fear mongering crap.
