I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about alternatives to baby formula. This melamine shit is terrible. I already knew that soy based formula was bad because of the phyto-estrogens and phytates. I can’t believe people feed their children that crap. I would appreciate some input. Thanks.
What’s wrong with breastmilk?
is this for you or your kids?
at anyrate:
you can buy real breast milk. its pricey though like $3 an ounce which for a baby would be about $100/day, so i would try to hitch up with a group of woman who are naturally producing as their is generally some excess. Be sure they dont have things like HIV and hepatitis as those can be passed through breast milk.

It pretty much seems like that mothers who breast feed at one time or another use formula. I was just wondering if there were some decent alternatives to use sparingly as a supplement to breast milk.

Personally, I think there is no alternative to breast milk. Just like lifting, breastfeeding takes dedication and planning. I nursed all three of my children, two of them are twins, and never substituted any formula. I also worked full time. I nursed them all for a year before I switched to raw cow’s milk. This is really no big deal, lots of women do this.
That was over 20 years ago. There are more available accomodations for working women to pump their milk (including more comfortable breast pumps!!) than ever.
I pay attention to my diet, why shouldn’t my children get the best nutrition nature can offer?
But if there is an emergency, you can feed an infant goat’s milk mixed 1 to 1 with spring water, and add a tiny pinch of sugar. Goat’s milk is much closer to human milk for an infant under a year old.
Have to agree with YM on this one for sure, beside nursing being healthier for the baby, with all the health scares on packaged products, why take the risk?
It does take planning and dedication, but if I can do it, anyone can. I didn’t think I’d last a week…but I stuck with it for 9 months and then switched directly to regular milk, in a cup. I could not tolerate the idea of my daughter sucking on a plastic nipple.
Can I reopen this conversation?
What about a baby that is lactose intolerant? My wife has been breastfeeding but has gotten inconclusive test results back about glucosemia (sp??). Repeat test was the same and we are getting further tests done to be definitive. If he is lactose intolerant, what are some viable alternatives since I believe soy-based formulas are out of the question?
PM me also if you have some specific suggests for formula. I’m not sure the goat’s milk would work since I would think it would have lactose or be feasible for us.
Also, what of the formula we are looking to use? It’s Infamil LactoseFree which from what I can determine is 10% soy, not great but the only alternative I can find is Similac Sensitive which looks to be <15%, 15% at least. Is 10% still too much?
