Gonna Punch Life in the Face

4/25/12

And It All Starts Coming Together…

Felt like shit all day today. Don’t know why, just did. Got to the gym anyway with the idea that I was going to do rack bottom squats. Turned out quite well and I left feeling super amped, which is awesome.

Warmup

Lower Stuff

ACTIVATION:

Nil today.

ME WORK:

Rack Bottom Squats (pins set so I just break parallel)

Bar x lots
135x5
185x5
225x5
275x3
315x3
355x1 ← like lightning
375x1 ← like lightning shit more lightning and went faster

Downset:
315x4 ← good for prolly 8 here, but lost the bar and just called it

ACCESSORY WORK:

Reverse Hyper

90x3x15

HS Low Rows

3x10

DONE.

Will be hitting some band pull aparts in my apt before I shower, and then that’ll be finito for the day. Starting to feel energized in the gym again, which means this easing off the gas as I get to the comp is going to be money. I didn’t realize how much the activation work has been kicking my ass (literally) since I started the Coy program, but holy shit I’ve got some low end torque now that I didn’t use to have. 375 with a 2 second dead stop in the hole would never have gone up a few months ago. I’m getting more and more stoked for this contest.

Saturday I’m going to go in and hit the Axle, the Yoke, and maybe the Tire with a few keg carries thrown in for practice. Then I’ll be back in Monday night to do the Farmer’s/Tire Medley one more time before the meet and push the prowler a bit just to top off the conditioning tank, and give me time all week to eat and get that surcompensation factor that’s so awesome on a deload before a contest. Then it’s just eating and mobility work until May 5th. I’m already weighing in at 220 in the mornings now, so I’m inching closer and closer to my goal. Surprisingly, I’m still maintaining decent abs and BF%, though it’s entirely unintentional. Feelsgoodbro.

PEACE.

Last Saturday of Prep

Decent session. Felt sluggish but I’m still catching up on sleep. I’ll be ready to kick ass come Saturday though. The work is done, now it’s time to rest, eat, and do my mobility work to get everything tuned up and ready to go. A week out is usually when I’m feeling shitty. A few days before is usually when I feel awesome, so I’m not worried.

Warmed up well, then

Axle C&P

Up to a top set with 185. Dropped in the middle and cleaned again just to practice.

Yoke Walk

Used a New super wide yoke and took ~500 for 80’ no problems. Even with crap grip.

Keg Carry

Practiced picks and runs with 200 keg. Should be no problem.

DONE.

Eating and stretching and stuff until tomorrow. Going to go do a run of the Axle/Tire tomorrow and some back work, etc and then it’s time to work on the mental game.

PEACE.

one event at a time and good luck!

Thanks bud! That’s the plan. Just tick awa!y at it and have fun and see where I end up!

Been foam rolling and stretching all week. Weight is up to 223 in the mornings, so I’m holding onto my mass pretty well. I’ve got a big class to compete against, and it should be intense, which will be fun. Also going to be near 90 degrees, so I’ve got to be super tight with my hydration (had a heat stroke in a race in high school, don’t want to do that again) to make sure I don’t end up wrecking my performance because of cramps.

It’s going to be a fun one for sure!

Good luck, man!!!

Just got back in town. Holy hell it was a tough meet out in the sun, but I’ve got some fun stuff to report. Will hopefully have the meet write-up in tomorrow. Time to eat some more and then pass back out.

PEACE.

ELITE NUTRITION’S STRONGEST MAN WRITE UP

5/5/12

First off, I want to thank Jared McGowen for putting on such a smoothly run show. He’s got an eye for this thing, and I was really impressed with how it all went. Secondly, I will talk about what I need to work on following each event. There’s a good bit I learned at this show, and I’m excited to see where I end up from here. Just need to get stronger all over, and I need to remember I’m still new at this. Lastly, met Dasher and her man in person at the show. They’re really cool people. Here goes:

FARMER’S WALK/TIRE FLIP MEDLEY( 230 per hand farmers, 600 tire, 60’ course, 90s time limit)

60.09 seconds, 5th/10

Thoughts:

This one was the event I was sure I wouldn’t finish a month ago. Conditioning is key, as is following the tire down after each flip. I’ve got video forthcoming to see if I did that for real, but it felt good in the comp. My farmers were a smidge slow, and that’s what cost me. 2nd -4th beat me by less than 3 seconds. First smoked the course in around 49 seconds I think. Happy with this.

YOKE WALK (600 yoke, 80’ course, 60 seconds)

60’, 8th/10

Thoughts:

Little bummed here. I need to practice with different yokes and hand positions. We have a fairly narrow yoke and I can get super tight on it, and couldn’t with this one as it was a bit wider. I also need to be going heavier with the yoke in practice so 600 feels easier, and going the contest distance. I’d only been practicing to 60 feet. And I need to be consistent with the core stability work. I will likely start implementing that into my warmup or something as it needs to be done. Vid coming on this too, but I’m sure it’s ugly.

AXLE CLEAN AND PRESS (clean once, 225# axle)

2 reps, 8th/10

Thoughts:

This is where I realized I need to work the axle at different points in the workout rather than first off. With the heat and the heavy events before, I didn’t have the leg drive I normally use to press. As a result, I suffered mightily here. I was expecting nearly 10 reps with this, but I just didn’t have the juice. Even in the rack position my legs felt wobbly and unstable. This was partly due to dehydration and the heat, but also to poor planning with my training. I’ll be smarter next time though, no worries. At least I fought through 2 reps.

KEG CARRY/SLED DRAG MEDLEY (40’ course, 200 keg to sled, run back, 230, then pull sled 40’)

49 seconds I think, 3rd or 4th place here.

Thoughts:

I had great picks on both kegs and covered the ground easily in the sprint back. I lost some time dragging the sled though. A friend of mine who was also competing and told me to grab the handles a certain way (he’s been competing for 14 years), and I didn’t listen and lost a few seconds as a result. Started feeling better by this point, as I finally started to catch back up on hydration despite having been pounding fluids all day. The GF brought me a crapload of ice water and it did the trick. I love that woman.

TRUCK PULL, SEATED START (Ford F-150, 60’ for time)

16.09 seconds, 2nd/10 (first was 15.94)

Thoughts:

Had to go out with a bang! I watched the other competitors that went before me struggle with the truck. A lot of them kept leaning back and pulling the rope instead of pulling out slack with quick hands and arms and it slowed them down. I rowed twice then just hammered with my arms. My GF said my pull looked significantly smoother than the rest, and I think I just was a little weaker on the initial pull than the 1st place guy, and that’s what made the difference. Glad to do really well in an event though. Makes it all worth it.

Overall:

-Build Core Strength
-Need to work heavier weights than comp weights
-Need to not be scared about going heavy on events days
-Explosion was good, will keep up with Coy’s programming
-Conditioning was decent, will implement more prowler work following workouts

And that’s about it folks. Wanted to thank the meet promoter and all the guys working who had to pick up everyone’s weights and shit after each event. They did a fantastic job and it was 90 degrees the whole day. Everyone had good attitudes despite the heat, and it was a great competitive atmosphere. It’s contests like these that make me keep coming back to strongman. I love the toughness and enjoy talking to folks between events and getting tips. I’ve got nowhere to go but up, and I’ll be some kind of force in the sport one day.

Back in the gym Monday!

PEACE.

Awesome! I’m super jelly you met Dasher!!

Sounds like you’ll be set for some productive training coming up. Good job man.

Remember, for every one of us who’s willing to compete, there are thousands who will never have the ballsackitude to get out there and mix it up.

Thanks bud! And she’s a cool chick. Fun to be around. I think I’m definitely set for some good stuff here. Just need to be smart and get my rest in when needed. I’ll be joining the working world soon (hopefully, if some people will ever get back to me) and that will definitely help with getting a solid training cycle and block set up.

Time to rest up and get focused again. I love being so stoked about my sport again!

Congrats on the comp homeboy!

Great job!! I loved reading your write up, sounds like a great experience and a great way to get that fire under the ass turned up a notch.

Thanks all!

Back In The Saddle Again

5/7/12

I can rest when I’m dead. Or the next two weeks between end of rotation and graduation. One of the two. Upping the volume a bit and dropping the ME stuff down some in an effort to make a viable plan that all can follow. I know what works for me, but sometimes you gotta give a little to get a little. Going to train in a fashion that allows me to hit the main lifts with my training partners, and then I’ll toss in accessory work as I rest. Keep the furnaces stoked and up my work capacity at the same time.

This also means going back to a bit of a split. Pressing on Mondays, Lower on Wednesdays, and Events Saturday for now. There will likely be either Accessory Work on Fridays or conditioning, we shall see. If the job I’m working on getting pans out, my lifting schedule will have to change again back to T/Th/Sa, so that may ruffle some feathers. We’ll see. Here’s today’s work:

Will be hitting some extra core work tomorrow before and after work. For now? Sleep.

PEACE.

Shaken Leg Syndrome

5/9/12

Definitely feeling the comp today. Just need to sleep these next two weeks and I’ll catch up just fine. Nothing wrong with a little overreaching now and then as long as I don’t descend into full blown overtraining. I got this. Also, Biotest sent me some Brain Candy (thanks guys!) to sample with my most recent order. Pretty good stuff IMO. Definitely felt more alert and “in it” today, but still not as sharp as I feel with my Ani/DMAE/Vinpo combo I take to be on my A-game in the clinic. However, I may consider adding BC to my list as a substitute. It’s certainly a very viable alternative.

Here’s how today broke down:

Warmup

Foam Roll and Agile 8

ACTIVATION:

Reverse Hypers

3x10

Axle Power Cleans

135x3
175x3x2 <— felt snappy on the last set. GG legs.

CIRCA MAX WORK:

Axle Deadlifts (Switched hands for Alt Grip after 5 Reps on the 10 rep sets)

265x3
315x2x10 <–worked on winding up my hips to get them firing harder. Worked great!

RDL’s

135x10
185x3x8

Mondo Hack Squat

3x8

DONE.

Legs too shaky to hit prowler today. Will try to come back in Friday and hit it, otherwise I’ll throw it in Saturday after I do events. I’m really going to push for Friday though, because I know we’re going to try and do stones and I hate pushing the prowler after cleaning tacky off of God knows what.

In other news, I’m down to one of 2 applicants applying for a job at this particular PT clinic I want to work at. I’m competing with an applicant that was the director of the clinic’s student at one point, so pretty steep competition. At any rate, I’ve passed two phone interviews and a face-to-face today with flying colors so I’m told. All that remains is for me to come in next Tuesday and see how the clinic works, and show off how good I can be relating to people I’ve never met. Going to have to bring the A-game to make sure I snag this job. It’s got pretty good starting pay and amazing benefits for a new grad PT, so fingers crossed I get it. (it’s also near my gym and I get 1.5 hour lunch breaks. See?)

Anyways, I’ll be back later this week.

PEACE.

Good luck with the job! I saw this and thought you’d be able to appreciate it as well…

My friends found that the other day too! It’s pretty hilarious. Some of the GIF’s they’ve found are brilliant. Thanks!

Long Ass Arms Ain’t Good For Everything

5/12/12

My log technique continues to feel like smashed assholes. Got work to do for sure. My long arms end up causing me to get my elbows too high sometimes, making pressing the thing nearly impossible. Wish I’d known sooner. Ah well. 2 PR’s today though in events, so I’m pleased considering I still feel a bit rough around the edges from the meet. Here’s today’s work:

Warmup

All sorts of stuff

Log Press

Log xlots
115x5
175x5
195x4
205x3
225x1 (wanted 2)
245x0 <–terrible clean and rack. Oh well.

Farmer’s Walks

110x50’
200x50’
250x50’ <–PR! (+20lbs) and never been picked before

18’ Deadlift

135x5
245x1
335x1
425x1

Yoke Walk (Beltless)

400x60’
490x60’
580x60’ ← PR without a belt, was super tight and stable too

DONE.

I feel like a bag of butts after today. So I’m going to eat a lot and sleep a ton and be back to fighting shape by Monday or so.

PEACE.

I’ll be back in the gym tonight, but I felt like this deserved it’s own post.

Tip Top Tuesday, Good Sir

5/15/12

Decent session today. Been running all over creation today with interviews and stuff. Ready to get this job thing locked down so I can get to making money and training on some sort of schedule again. Met the crew at NBS for tonight’s work:

Warmup

Upper Stuff

CGBP

Bar x10
135x8
185x5
205x4

Going to walk some in the morning as I coach my lady through a track workout, then I’m squatting and prowling at NBS tomorrow night. Got all day to eat my face off and get ready. Should be some nasty stuff, and I’m pretty damn stoked. Now, I got to shower up, and cook a huge carbtastic dinner. Because fuck dieting and abs, I’m getting strong(er) up in hurr.

PEACE.

So You Squatted Down, Better Stand The Fuck Back UP

5/16/12

Another solid session at NBS today. Back is a little toasted from the heavy DB rows yesterday, but why let that stop me?

Warmup

Extensive and lots of stuff

Activation Work:

Box Jumps

3x3

Reverse Hypers

3x10

Then onto the good stuff:

Rack Bottom Squats

135x5
225x5
315x5
365x3 <–lost the groove a bit on the 2nd one, ruined the set. Coulda had 5.

Leg Press

3x8, last set was stupid heavy, don’t remember the weight though.

Prowler +90

12 runs of 60’. Diediedie.

Hammer Curls

30x8
40x8
50x8

Various Ab Exercises

DONE.

Proud of the extra laps on the prowler today. I want to make it a point for sure this time to never lose any more events due to lack of conditioning. I’m off to a good start, and I’m still weighing at or near 220, and leaning up to boot. Always a good sign that I’m on the right track. Speaking of track, I’m going to the track in the morning probably to coach my lady through a little tune up workout before she races Saturday. Should prove interesting. Then I’ll be back in the gym on Friday for some log work and upper accessory stuff, and then in later Saturday after she races to run through the events.

Ready for the weekend!

PEACE.
