Golf Drivers

I realize this isn’t a golfing forum but was interested to know.

  1. What is your current golf driver?

  2. If it is not your all time favorite then what driver was?

  3. Also, is your handicap high or low, assuming this variable will change what kind of driver you use.

I Hit a Cobra Speed Pro S with a Fujikara Blur X-stiff shaft.

I am a 2 handicap…

Oh man the Nike SQ’s can eat a dick. They’re like tying a stick to a shallow rubbermaid container filled halfway with sand. Akward as all hell.

My current driver is also my favorite.

It’s a 1999 10 degree Calloway Big Bertha 454 with a firm flex shaft.

It’s pure driver baby. Came out before Calloway tried to get fancy with the warbird and the hawkeye and the whole “X” series bullshit.

My grandad told me it was ok to mess around with irons, but the driver should be like your favorite shotgun, or your favorite guitar. Once you find it, you keep it.

EDIT
I’m awful, shoot in the low to mid 90’s.

Impressive handicap, mine is much higher then yours.

I should probably put my answer in here.

I golf a Nike SQ STR8-FIT Driver which is the 2010 model.

Best Driver I ever hit with was the new TaylorMade R-11 but I have not bought it as the price tag is high $300+ I believe.

My handicap is 18+ so I search out the most forgiving clubs I can find.

I hit a 2009 Cobra S-91, stiff factory shaft (forgot what it was).

It works for me - routinely hitting it 280+ with good accuracy. I think an x-flex would be better though - when I push it, it feels a little floppy. If I get ambitious, I might have a new shaft fitted or just buy a new driver.

I’m 18 handicap - short game sucks. I don’t play/practice it enough to get my scoring where it should be.

I have the opposite philosophy with clubs. I prefer to swing the same irons season after season but always check out the new drivers. I visit the local golf shops every season to swing the new drivers with no intention to buy. Once in awhile, like last year, I will love a driver so much I do buy it so I guess everyone wins.

Taylor made 420, 10 degree head, 80m shaft, fat grips. I have hit it 300 yards regularly

I have a TM R7 with a 90f Shaft, 9.5 loft and canNOT hit that for the life of me.

I think there is more in the shaft and loft than people realize.

btw…I still have a 24 handicap. You can’t hit a 300 yard drive, drop it on in 2, then 3-4 put and still score.

putting is for pussies.

Do you ever find yourself on the course wishing you were still playing last years driver? Which driver did you have prior to your SQ?

Unless I break an iron or a wedge I won’t replace it. I’ve had my driver for almost a decade and every club in my bag has been the same since 2009 when my last addition was a used Ben Hogan 56 degree.

There really is no reason for my not to have upgraded my driver by now. I’m sure there are longer ones out there for me, but my 454 is simple, I’m in the 280+ range with it, and it sounds like a god-damned cannon.

Before I upgraded to the Nike SQ my driver was an old Wilson Staff. Can’t remember the name but I had received it as a gift in 2002ish. It was a driver that predated these new larger heads that are easy to hit so I have never wanted it back. Whether it is subconscious or not I find a ball sitting atop an extra long tee easy to hit with a 460cc head when compared to the setup I learned on (shorter tee, small club face).

I have one similar, but it is the squarer one with stiff shaft 9.5 deg loft. I was probably close to a 10 handicap when I played regularly, which was a couple of years ago.

Its my favorite because I was golfing with a couple of coworkers and we came to a short par 4, and I said alright 10 bucks if you drive the green, and they were like impossible. The first one was a mighty slice, but I teed another ball and let it fly. It was maybe 325 yards and I was on the fringe of the green. They nearly shit their pants and I pretended like it was no big deal.

Man, that’s the best. Were you able to par the hole?

The few times I’ve driven the green it was all I could do to calm down enough to 3 put.

Fuckin’ Golf man.

I believe I managed a par on that one, but it was a shitty round overall. Didn’t really matter, as that one swing sealed my legend among those guys.

After I graduated college, I played daily until I finally took a job offer. I’ve played maybe 3 or 4 times since, but that may have been one of the best Summer/Falls of my life.

I know a dude who still uses a wooden driver. I shit you not lol. He regrips it every year with another layer of white hockey tape, it’s fucking ridiculous but funny as hell.

225 to 235 with a little fade straight down the fairway, all…day…long. Left handed prick.

I borrowed his sons NIKE(four or five year old model) driver last week and crushed it. So forgiving. I used the same ball for the whole round which has never happened before. All because of that driver and how accurate it was imo.

Do you folks use those super long tees?

I endend up prefering a normal lenght tee. Didn’t feel comfortable having the ball elevated so high.

I gotta make him an offer on that baby lol.

lol, I hit that with my 4 iron.

My uncle still golfs a full set of wooden woods, driver-5w, and I played with him last week. At his age it is just nice to see him out on the course so I didn’t comment on his woods. We did get him to try the '09 burner driver but he refused to swing my Nike SQ because it was square.

I golf a 3" tee set high but the face of my club is huge and the head is 460cc, which is the largest allowed if I am not mistaken. Unlike an iron I do not try to make contact with the ground when swinging a driver so a high set ball feels right to me.

Bull shit, film yourself hitting it 225-235 with a 4I and upload it. No editing either, one video of you hitting and watching the ball land at the 235 mark.

If you meant 4-hybrid that I might believe but right now your saying you hit your 4-iron 50 yards farther then non-pro golfers would average?

Here is a cut and paste of average club distance and the webpage I got it from:

He is one hell of a golfer though and has probably a six or seven handicap. Did I mention he practically drinks a beer a hole? I have witnessed this guy passed out drunk in the cart get woken up, stagger up to the tee and smack right it down the middle of the fairway no probs. Woke him up for each shot on a par five that day, he parred the hole and birdied the next doing the same thing lol.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see that list. Most folks exaggerate distance. I’m pretty sure I’ve hit my 2I 210 but not consistantly enough to depend on it.

I confess, if I designed a golf course there would be like one par three water hole or something on each nine, for betting purposes only lol.

All the rest would be fours and fives so you need to use a driver the whole round pretty much.

Is that so wrong?

That list can and should vary widely.

Golf tracks should have as much variety as possible. Par 3’s are essential, to test your shorter irons and approach shots.

Golf is a test of skill, not a video game.

The list is very hard to read so here it is simplified:

Club:Men Distance in yards "numbers represent low average and high shots)
Driver: 200-230-260
3-wood: 180-215-235
5-wood: 170-195-210

6-iron: 130-150-160
7-iron: 120-140-150
8-iron: 110-130-140
9-iron: 95-115-130
PW: 80-105-120
SW: 60-80-100

Are you saying the listed ranges above are not widely enough varied?
