Goblet Jump Squat

Thibs:

Well, I certainly didn’t invent this but today at gym for deload I was doing goblet squats with wife - worked up to 80lb DB and tried jump squats with it.

I haven’t ever seen it but wondered if you had ever used them.

Felt very comfortable and natural movement. Hanging DB’s to side seems to pull on shoulders when you hit ground - BB feels like it smacks into spine unless you have it just right.

What do you think of them?

I often use something similar with individuals with shoulder issues. But I don’t hold the DB like in a goblet squat, but firmly grab the handle with both hands and hold it tight on the chest.

Less stress on the shoulders and spine. BUT if you are a big squatter you can’t really use enough weight on this. The best results from jump squats are atteined when using 15-30% of your max squat.

It also tends to shift the center of gravity forward when you dip down and that could change your jumping mechanics (a lot people will use excessive torso forward lean when using this technique).

Christian, I recently heard about the lumberjack squat. Do you use it only for teaching purposes, or does it have it’s place as an ancillary movement in a program?
