Yep, same exercise. Just a different way of reducing the load. Coach Davies likes to use the hands to get a start on the concentric. Kieth Hobman - the author, who is an accomplished coach, himself - prefers the bands. As did Louie Simmons and others. Including myself. The actual load taken this way is measurable, as opposed to the subjective “Pushup” method.
The implements might be a bit hard to come by, though.
For a beginner to this exercise is it better to start off with the “pushup” method and workup to this. What type of rep/sets scheme would be recommended?
Great pictures. Can you imagine doing those with a loaded barbell on your shoulders? Wow!
