Glucosamine, Chronditin, MSM?

I was unable to find Cy Wilson’s ConsumerReport about Glucosamine vs Chronditin in issue 154 for refernce.

What is the final word on these supplemnts? Are they worth it? Do they do more damage then good?

thanks!

If you’re in need of joint support then glucosamine and chondroitin are great.

MSM may help with pain and inflammation, but if it inhibits protein synthesis, then it could be detrimental (we just don’t know now).

Dave your the best thanks for the quick reply!

So your saying that MSM may be the inhibiter and not the glucosamine?

I love the combination of the 3. Helps me when my knees get all uber inflammed and in pain from grinding…baseball be damned for this…

I have never ever heard that MSM may be connected to inhibition of protein synthesis. A quick google search didn’t bring anything up either.

So David, if you have grounds for mentioning this, please let us know.

Just thought I’d throw in my two cents on these supplements.

I have trained for and ran a marathon for the past few years now (this year will be my fourth). I have experienced knee pains every year with the exception of this one. This may be attributed to the fact that this is the first year I’ve supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin. Then again, it might not, but it’s been worth the money in my opinion.

I don’t know what everyone elses experience has been but I’ve been taking 2000 mg of glucosamine SULFATE as oppossed to the glucosamine and chronditin mix and have had wonderful results. The best part of it is glucosamine sulfate is much cheaper than the combination. I actually got the tip from my grandfather who spent an entire life cattle farming and now has cartilage worn down beyond belief it has helped him wonders.I take 1000 in the am and 1000 in the pm. Hope this helps.

In my experience, Glucosamine + Chondritin works like a charm. just remember it is a cumulative type of thing; your elbow/knee won’t stop hurting 45 minutes after taking a dose. Give it a month.

Combine this supplement with three or four very low-weight/high-rep warm up sets of whatever joint is ailing you, and you’ll see your problem diminish greatly.

I buy the Glucosmine+Chondroitin+MSM by schiff for a bottle of 180 tabs at Costco for $30.
It helprd my shoulder joints and rotator cuff in 2 weeks and after 1 month I was able to lift again.
IMO its worth it

Antiinflammatories traditionally work by knocking out COX-2, which is necessary for protein synthesis. MSM seems to have an antiinflammatory effect, but the mechanism of action is unknown (as you mentioned).
