I’m very confused. I finally got myself into a chiropractor to examine my messed up shoulder and my painful elbow. I’ll spare you the details but he suggested that I buy some of his Glucosamine that he sells. I did considering that I have heard that it works and that the little work that he did do on me did show me some dramatic results in strength in joints. Here’s the crazy part, the bottle he sold me has among other ingredients, 100 mg of Glucosamine with about 25 mg of Chondrotin. I then went to a supplement website to see if I got ripped off on price. The amounts of ingredients in all these product vary SO GREATLY. You saw the stats on mine, others were 1500 mg and 1000 mg respectively whereas another one was only 1 g of ingredients. Does anyone have any knowledge on the proper amount to take?
To get a decent affect from glucosamine, you need approx 1500 mg per day, best if split into two doses (750 in the morning, 750 at night). As for chondroitin, I’ve never taken it, but the sources I’ve seen (who weren’t selling the stuff) say that it doesn’t survive the digestive process well, so very little is actually absorbed.
1500mg glucosamine and 1200mg condroiton. I specified this in my supplement sense article. In addition, Cy Willson wrote an article on glucosamine a few weeks back. Check out the archives for all you could want to know and more!
Listen, There’s an article by Doug Kalman on the site that talks about insulin resistance as a result of Glucosamine supplementaion. I think it’s called “News From The Front”. In short, if you’re worried about getting an edge with regards to your body composition, or conversely losing your edge, stay away from glucosamine. However, your shoulder/elbow problem may be severe enough to chance it. Chondroitin and MSM were suggested. SAMe is also used with some success if memory serves me. As far as dosing goes, I don’t know what normal parameters are.
Well shit, what do I want to do. Heal or get ripped up? The choice should be obvious but it’s not.
