When I first started deadlifting, I found it incredibly hard to get the bar past my knees. I have long legs and it felt like the natural path of the bar was to cut through the knees. At heavier weights my DL looked like stiff-legged DL. I eventually stumbled on a description of the Sumo DL, and gave it a try. It took a little getting used to, but it got my knees to the side and out of the way. I can Sumo a lot more weight than standard DL & my lower back doesn’t get nearly as sore as it used too.
A quick google should get you a descent description. I put my toes about an inch from the plates and my hands just outside the smooth part of the bar. That’s probably extreme, but I’m 6’6", and my hips are higher than my 6’10" brother’s.
