GHR?

I know Dave tate said the so-called natural GHR are not as good as real GHR’s. But if you dont have a ghr what should you do instead? I have been doing lots of sldl and 45 degree hypers. And are these Natural GHR’s any good or am I better off with staying the corse?
Thanks

Hey Will,

What is the corse?

Tate is probably right (probably do to the stretch and recruitability of the posterior chain), but when that is all you have available what are you supposed to do? They are the next best thing.

He will also say the reverse hyper machine is better than a “natural reverse hyper” and that barbell squats are better than dumbbell squats. All true but if all you have is dumbbells does that mean you don’t lift?

Natural GHR’s are okay but you must understand that they are very hard and cant be treated the same way as a GHR machine.

What the hell is a natural Rev. Hyper?
My Rev. Hyper is natural and it costed about $1200. Give me a break.

Another movement that is similar to a GHR, albeit a lot less challenging is doing a GHR movement on a 45 degree raise. Make sure the pads end before the point where you will bend over them. Just make sure you raise yourself to vertical and use your legs to pull you to vertical. It is fine and probably preferable to bend your knees. If you’re doing it correctly you’ll know it.

Hey Barbender,

I had never heard a harrop curl referred to as a “natural GHR” so that is why I put “natural reverse hyperextension” in quotation marks, neither one uses a machine. If I just said reverse hyper most people here would think with machine. I unfortunately cannot afford the actual machine like you can so I do mine in a more “natural” way, you know without the use of a machine, like laying across a platform at the playground, off the end of a pick-up or the side of a short wall. Your legs still hang down but you can’t really offer much in the way of a load like you can using the machine. I was using it to offer a comparison that might help the person understand that doing the “less effective variation” when that is all that is available is still better than nothing.

Hey will,

I was just done working a 12 hour night shift when I wrote my first reply…forget the question, I reread it and understand.

T-Ren,
I totally understand man. That is what I have been preaching to people all along. I tell them that you can’t let a lack of equipment stop you from making gains. Believe me because I coach at a very small high school that has shit for a weight room. So I try to bring in some of my stuff, but I also keep it simple and creative to make up for a lack of good equipment. But at the same time you must realize that their are no real replacement for these exercises. The Rev. Hyper machine actually pulls the weight past your face, which aids in back rehab.
But like I said, dont let equipment be your excuse for not getting strong. But all exercises are not equal.
