GF's Low Thyroid Problem?

Sorry, not a steroid question per se… but my girlfriend says her thyroid is low functioning.

Apparently her TSH is 2.09 and they say that anything over 2 is considered low functioning.

Is this true? Her doctor wont prescribe levoxithrone because it’s not low functioning enough.

Do you think she needs it? What other methods would you advise?

Thanks!

We don’t know if she needs it, is she symptomatic?

Tell her to find a new doctor.

You actually have an above avg doc because they know that TSH > 2 is a problem. most won’t treat until TSH is > 5. Actually TSH > 1 with related symptoms is a concern and should be tested further and treated if necessary.

however jumping onto a T4 only medication without extra testing to see what is happening is not the best practice. plus T4 only meds do not work for everyone.

Before medicating she really needs to test for FT4, FT3, RT3, 8am Cortisol, and ferritin + the thyroid antibody tests.

Hi Purechance,

Thanks for the feedback. My girl has adrenal problems too and you can physically see how its so detrimental to her life, but i’m just reading up on this now. I think she had the test recently.

I’m trying to research this myself… but what are the alternatives to T4 only medication? Is there any natural approach she can take? Does she need to find another doctor?

Also what will those other tests show? The information on this is so overwhelming that it’s hard to know where to begin.

(Aand thanks for the website link man!)

Yes, binge eating/sugar addiction (which she’s got under control) CONSTANT fatigue, no energy to even talk most of the time… it’s really affecting the quality of her life and its been going on for years, but we’re only now getting to the bottom of it.

yes, there is a lot of information. I have learned a small part of it over the last three years through trial and error and what I have been able to gleen from various forums/sites.

check out the threads at the top of the forum including the blood test sticky. it is mostly related to HRT, but touchs on Thyroid/Adrenal issues as well.
