Getting lean

Aww shucks TT you sure know how to make a guy blush!

Hey, creed, it was an excellent/valid catch on your part. I 'preciate your keeping me (technically) honest. And truth be told, it’s in keeping with the quality of all your other posts. So keep on blushing!!! (grin)

I was asked the following question:

You mentioned that the poster was making a mistake by eating 90g of protein in some meals, in part because his body cannot utilize that much protein in one meal (if I understood you correctly).

“Coincidentally, I have been thinking about this issue recently. In general, how much protein is too much per meal? I realize this might depend on your lbm or other factors, but do you know of any guidelines? I tried a little bit of online research but haven’t come up with a great answer (some said 25g, but that seems too low). How much protein should/can we eat per meal?”

First off, you’re right. There is no consensus on exactly how much protein the body can utilize in one sitting. You’re right that there are a whole host of factors that affect the number, some of which we’re probably not fully aware.

What I generally try to do is keep the number to 50g or less for a man with a lot of LBM. That may even require a lot of meals (8 or so) and maybe even a middle-of-the-night feeding/shake.

As a general rule, though, the trick is to calculate your protein requirements for the day (LBM x 1.5g) and divide it by 6 (the minimum number of meals I recommend per day). If it comes in well below 50g per meal, I leave it at that. If it comes in high (near the 50g number), I may increase the number of meals to reduce the grams-of-protein-per-meal requirement.

All I’m trying to do is optimize protein intake, spread it out, so that more of it is utilized by the body for building and repair. Any time you take in more of a macronutrient than the body needs, it goes to fat or is utilized for a purpose you never intended.

Good question!!!
